Player Watch Ned Long

Disappointed by the pile on here. Long has developed in a team role and is a top 23 inclusion. He has played 39 games and has time to develop. Coaching and senior players need to help here. Being in the young AA team last year is huge, the players available for that team is wonderful. To stamp a player’s papers in a badly performing round 1 team is mind blowing.

Too funny, the best bit about the delusion from Turnover lovers is this belief it’s 1 bad game..

It’s a bad game in Rd 1, OR, Preliminary Final and Rds 25, 24, 23, 22, 21, 20, 19, 18, 17…etc etc

Didn't get a single clearance on the weekend, Fly actually limited nEds CBA time. CFC scored from stoppages well above league averages in Neds absence. 11 possessions is not really a big day out for a midfielder but Ned did lay 10 tackles which is good! Up against Brisbane this week, Ned has been shite against Brisbane in recent past so Fly is ummmm, being consistent, faith in selection maybe!

What is YOUR definition of a bad game - I’m tipping it’s completely unrealistic.
Clayton Oliver is a gun and despite that has had 4 CBC from 40 CBA’s in the last 2 games. So a 90% failure rate is considered ELITE.
That should give you some perspective!!

For what it's worth, the elite of the elite inside mids usually get centre clearances in ~15% of their centre stoppage attendances

i would never let him start in the centre square, should line up at CHF or the HF flank and look to come in off the square to tackle. he doesnt win centre clearances, too slow, but he is a tackling machine. so can make an impact there, plus being 194cm with a big frame, he should look to be a marking option against a smaller opponent for quick kicks out of the middle, another way he can develop his game.

We know you and dwindling fan club think a good game is every time he steps onto the field…

But the bar is extremely low for Ned given Friday was allegedly a good game because he laid a few tackles and had 1 good kick.

You keep banging on about CB clearance as the metric - I’ve just proven Oliver fails on that metric 90% of the time, and 85% for other Elites according to others.
So get some perspective sport AND Long only had 8 CBA so clearly his role in changing.

lol, it’s 1 stat that shows how useless he is and the fact we had our best game in the middle when he was removed from there really just proves my point. Plus bringing up other players who get clearances to defend Mr 0% is quite funny, he’s never won one all season long…

On the other hand Lachie Schultz is clearly the greatest midfielder the game has ever seen with 100% clearance rate and he’s a better tackler, so we’ve got a ready made replacement in the team.

Useless is a selective perspective for a player who’s kicking does not concern the coach, who is verbally supported by team members/coach, who is picked each week, who had two quick contract renewals because he was above expectation, who was in the under 23 afl side last year and performs a valuable muscle/defence role. There are different roles and balances in the midfield. Long is still a developing player and things can change but he gets games ahead of other developing players. I am in the fan club, there is a large number of people signed up including Fly. Long is driven and performs for the club. Shultz in the middle appeals. He is a very good forward many foolishly dismiss because of no goals (no hint intended) His two clearances were considered junk time by some. His role is different.

Ned had his first centre clearance for the year on the weekend, hopefully there's more to come.

2026
Lions CBA 22 CC 1
GWS CBA 8 CC 0
Crows CBA 16 CC 0
St Kilda CBA 13 CC 0

He should get plenty in the VFl, hopefully Anderson replaces him.
