49 to 9 in the 3rd quarter and we chased them down with time to spare then thought “That’s enough, we don’t want to show them our full arsenal”. 😂😂. Fly giving GC their moment in the sun like the legend he is

I want to be careful not to come across as a cocky bastard.

GC is a good team, but I saw what I saw in terms of selection and who we chose as sub.

Then kicking 0.10 to start with wasn’t ideal. Well that’s the loss we were “due” according to the media but we seem to have masterminded it ourselves. 😂

Yes, if we can avoid a 0.10 scoreboard for the rest of the year, that would be great!

I agree. I felt like we went in with a fair bit of cockiness in that regard which is a bit disappointing. Hopefully the match committee staff have learnt their lesson from Friday night.

It would be one thing if we had top 2 pretty much locked up by say, the Richmond game and we then managed a couple of the old blokes, but I feel we greatly underestimated this fixture and dropped a game that we didn’t really need to (albeit luckily we have put ourselves in a position where we probably can afford it)

We probably backed our system to win like it has all year with significant outs but kicking like Curnows in the first half and letting them get out to a 40 point lead made it a challenge. Then of all things we let a lead slip in a last quarter. Was our own little retro round

It's a fine line between making sure the veterans are firing when it matters most, and not appearing overconfident.

Fly does not appear to be an arrogant man. I assume it was more strategy based selection. The club must be betting they'll win at least 3 more games.

If we did get the 4 points, we'd be talking about another miracle comeback. :)

Ah well. You don’t get anything extra for finishing 3 games clear on top. We’ll have to settle for 2. 😂

Nick was always destined for the midfield, but let’s not kid ourselves that either Noble or Markov are in the same discussion as rebounding HBs. Josh moving to HB late last season was to the only player that came close to Nick’s output from there. Even AA rebounding HB Dan Houston hasn’t come close to Nick or Josh’s output thus far with us.

Noble was dropped because his form was ordinary.
Hence why I qualified that statement with “to a lesser extant”.

I suppose the other thing to consider is that it is probable that both Mihocek and Lipinski were under some degree of an injury cloud hence the decision to manage them then and there.

I reckon Pendles as sub was a bridge too far, and Fly will likely learn from that.

It was probably the most frustrated I’ve seen him, the way he was talking about our midfielders output in the presser.

Hindsight being 20/20, starting Pendles on the bench was less than ideal and detrimental to the result.

The way Fly referred to the midfield in the presser was reminiscent of Kirby's take on puffer jackets.

They need to make puffer undies so we get some “bulk” in areas required

Lloyd doesn't think we can play them both and he would go with Long

Hard to argue really any of that.

Does Pendles play as sub if he isn't chasing the games record? Probably not.

Mitchell and Long don't work they are the same player with Long being stronger and more team first.

Best mid mix would be.

Daicos Pendles Long
Daicos Long Crisp
Daicos Sidebottom Crisp
Pendles Long Crisp

Josh obviously can go in and hopefully a fit Degoey McCreery when back.

When you have both Mitchell and Long in midfield you can't play Sidebottom or Pendles they will walk it out with first possession.

Good to have this selection issues now then in 6 weeks.

To me it was just a case of Pendles’ load needing to be managed and so the call was made regardless of the opposition. We’ve got wins on the board so we have this luxury.

And at the same time, hindsight is 20/20. The error wasn't so much in selection but in the centre square combinations + Nick getting hurt and losing his run and pace.

Crisp + Daicos + Mitchell + Long + Sidebottom could have worked, as long as there was always one of Crisp or Daicos in the square. Having said that, they all had to be playing at 100% intensity.

In the future, we'll have a better balance of course. Which would include McReery and Pendle's and De Goey. Fingers crossed.

As much as I admire Tom Mitchell, I'd prefer to see the club back in Ned Long for the (long) term if it comes down to a choice between the two. He is young and already hard done by another club, and has shown what he can offer to us. The club needs to back that in.

He needs to work on his composure. Has a habit of smashing it to his boot without looking anywhere first.

And without looking at his boot sometimes...... or the ball. What is he looking at come to think of it? Coz it comes off at angles that make me doubt the laws of modern physics.

I doubt we were underestimating their midfield. I think Pendles as sub was a genuine audition to see where our mids are at and what could work. And we found out that Long can't be shifted to a negating role and Titch can't match it any more with the very best inside mids - not going to find that out against Richmond where we weren't going to be risking the 4 points.

So he should too.
The mids were unacceptable for most of the game.
Even the goal by Anderson when he ran through the middle from CB.
Nick went the other way and just watched Anderson take off.

Seemed subconsciously the game was classed as a “free hit” and we played accordingly

Probably right.

I still feel we should save these sorts of experiments/restings until we are a bit more locked into a top 2 spot.
