It's his first full season. His form was always going to taper off a bit. He'll come good before long

Long will come good before Long. What special kind of manic time travel voodoo is this?

Great article in Hun about Ned Long. Unfortunately i can't copy and paste here because Murdoch is a tighta**, but I can paraphrase.

Ned believes that the adversity and disappointment he suffered from being delisted at Hawthorn played a significant role in strengthening his character and resilience.

He holds no hard feelings in regard to Hawthorn - he feels that he developed well there, and that they had some excellent mids coming through so someone had to make way. He also felt that he played a few poor games towards the end while at Hawthorn which probably sealed their decision.

Ned prides himself on his own work ethic, but attributes the environment produced by the players and coaches at Collingwood for allowing him to thrive. He described Collingwood FC as an amazing place to develop and play football.

Ned described one of Fly's greatest strengths as a coach is his ability to instil belief in his players, which he has experienced.

I will allow myself one quote. This is what Ned said of Fly: “He has continued to give me the opportunity which has allowed me to grow, he has combined that with some really positive talk, embracing and highlighting my strengths and encouraging those.”

He said that this year he has focussed on improving his strength, power, hands, contest work, body work and physicality. He believes that this narrower focus on improving these key elements - which are also what he is best at - is what has led to his break out performances this year.

Long has laid 121 tackles this year, 40 better than the next Collingwood player (Jack Crisp).

Get the big strong and powerful bloke to improve his strength and power, and through that his body work and physicality.

Sounds simple, pretty much common sense, and very effective. Footy doesn’t have to be complicated, and likewise getting better at it.

And don’t forget the secret ingredient - which is the commitment of the player to put in the hard yards.

It speaks volumes about Long’s improvement.

So, done shite for 2 months and get's an article written about him saying he's a 'gun pie' after 29 games based on tackling......Club PR division in overdrive, Is the club selecting players based on popularity like some reality tv show... I watched better talent than Ned on 'the recruit'!

I would prefer Ned to be first to the ball at contest rather than second in line to guys that read the play better...Has Mayne been reincarnated to haunt me!

PS. I hope Ned rips the Fremantle midfield a new one on the weekend and in the process proves me wrong!

Ranked 6th in the AFL for goal assists, has dramatically improved our inside grunt and is an honest and committed competitor.
So your post is laughable.

So you think our selectors keep selecting him even though he has "done shite for 2 months" and that they select the team on the basis of "popularity" ??

Plus improving the things he's good at will drag everything else along with them.

We know you have a set against Ned, so no doubt you'll find something else about him to criticise.

21 CBAs, 0 centre clearances. Mason Cox got 1 from 5, Beau 3 from 12, Josh 1 from 6.

Ned is trying his best, as per tackle count. But for now his average output isn't really good enough for a premiership midfield. At least not one that relies on him as an extractor. It's a real weak link for us.

Exactly. This isn't hate or bias. He needs to hunt & win the footy in close if he is to be the midfield bull people expect him to be. Just having a high tackle count isn't enough.
3 clearances v Freo (Serong had 9 & Naicos 8) 0 clearances against GC Suns (Rowell had 12 & Anderson 9) 1 against Carlton (Cripps 9 & Naicos 7) This is the last 3 weeks. Previous to that he had 6 against WC eagles which is acceptable.
Again before that he had 1 against the Saints & 0 against the Dees on Kings birthday.
That's just 11 clearances in the last 6 weeks. Those are not the stats of a midfield gun or an inside bull. He needs to be first to the footy & not chasing others all the time.

Your opinion will be an unpopular one purely because Long is the BigFooty golden boy right now. Like Reef, MaCrae, Ash Johnson, and Johnny Noble before him. Fly’s presser suggests Mitchell will be back in this week, as he should be. Let them compete for a spot, no free rides for anyone in this team. We can trust Fly to make the tough decisions like he did with Noble in 2023.

Clearances aside, Long was a huge culprit when it came to kicking to Freo defenders.

When the best in the game Rowell and Serong are at only average 3.5 CB clearances per game (Footywire) and Ned is at 1.2 I’m not fussed. Especially when Ned is ranked 6 in the AFL for score involvements. I definitely prefer the latter.

I think it’s more about the trend spinny. Long started the year like a man possessed, but over his last 5 is only averaging 0.4 centre clearances a game. This is whilst being well and truly beaten by his direct man in a few crucial matchups

Who could replace him to improve CB Clearances while also offering Longs outstanding tackling pressure and score involvements ( both in the top 7 in the AFL)?

We aren't saying replace him. His form has certainly dropped away. He isn't the lone ranger. But our mids getting first use is bloody important & we just aren't doing that at the moment.
