I don't care what others think, he was a Collossus tonight. Brings lots of power to contests
I thought he was important. Just brings a physical presence that makes him hard to play against.

Sure, he makes mistakes, but his impact far outweights any disposal efficiency that fly has always said he doesn't care about.

Was at the ground last night. Not sure we have anyone more suited to play the bulkier defensive minded mid whose main objective is to neutralise the oppositions best inside mid, potentially Perryman.

Interesting match up against Newcombe who was still influential.

Ned caught Newcombe high a number of times, absolutely crunched him and made him earn and be mindful with every touch, which I don't mind at all.

Ned brings balance to our midfield unit, particularly if Pendles is missing.

So based on other posters posts, Ned gives the ball back to the opposition 50% of the time he has a possession, Ned also gives away free kicks and scoring opportunities to Hawthorn's best player.... Awesome!

Very frustrating player. He did some awesome things in that last quarter but also leaves you swearing at the TV 🤣
My TV can take it. Heavy duty model. It also has that appreciation feature. Long was so good. In terms of games and contribution he is still building. He won’t be perfect but he can improve. He has the right attitude. If he has stalled this year a bit the happens with developing and also list/role changes do that.

No other top 4 team has a full time mid who regularly struggles as much as Ned. Constant turnovers and normally struggles in clearances. When he gets the ball in congestion he’s so slow to make a decision he kills all our momentum and allows opposition to create a stoppage

Neds first clean possession last night was a dinky bandpass to Nick in congestion who got absolutely mauled by Hawthorn players...So predictable!

And he’s still miles better than Allan! Impressive, no?

He was rested not dropped. He was in the AFL young team last year. He has weaknesses but he has strength. In close he takes the ball, has no time and is tackled. He will grow. When we make top 4, a top 4 team will have a player like Ned. 😊

cant afford to have him at the centre bounces, its a negative for us.

maybe he was in there due to lack of options, but he doesnt hurt opposition when in there and cant negate opponents. too slow to react and has the turning circle of an ocean liner.
prefer him to start at CHF and blend into the play around the ground if we choose to play him, not at any stoppages where there is so much space

Won't beat around the bush, he almost sucked us all in at the start of last season but in reality he's very average.
Having said that his game tonight was actually admirable.

I know he makes a lot of tackles but I just don’t rate him to be in our best side.

He’s a fringe player but he’s getting a game most weeks which is a problem.

Seems to lack game awareness.

This is the biggest problem, you watch his opponent running away with the ball and he’s still standing on the other side of the circle, he’s soo slow…

He’s supposed to be the tough guy, yet usually it takes a very slight push in the chest for his opponent to break away, he actually gets pushed off the ball very easily.

It’s also why he gets caught holding the ball so often and gives away dumb free kicks scragging his opponent as he can’t keep up.

At least the other players in the team who are good tacklers provide some attacking potency and damaging opposition the other way, he doesn’t.

Unless he inherits Pendles brain, I think what we see is the best we will get form this guy, just a poor decision maker, AA already has him covered in brains, just needs more games now. Letting Newcombe waltz out of the 50 continually was unacceptable

Mixed bag with Ned.

9 clangers…

But game high contested possessions, game high tackles, 5 clearances
problem is half the time it's him fighting back for the arrent handball he just dished out. with that said we need to look at Ned as a package deal, he is an enforcer needed to protect nick.

“Let” is an interesting choice of words. Do you think he didn’t want to stop that happening?

I'm far from a big Long supporter, but he was not our worst mid last night. In fact he was our best contested ball winner. For a 23 year old (?), that's not bad.

We just have a weak midfield. It's our biggest weakness (despite what people think about our forward line). Until we get a genuine A or B+ grader to help Nick out reliably we will have to work harder than most to win against the best teams. AA and Long are both serviceable, ditto Crisp, but they're just nowhere near the standard of the best teams.

Ideally he would have been pushed out by HDM or Allan by now, but we know that hasn't and isn't happening. And Prindable is miles off, while Swadling plays a totally different position. Maybe Swadling or Parker can replace Jaicos at HHB and we switch things around that way, but it's hard to see who pushes Long out medium term who's currently on the list, as we're also going to lose Sidey and Crisp soon enough.

He was a beast last night. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a very sore boy. He treated his body like a battering ram.

Put it this way, last night did nothing to convince me that he’s got a clear role in the middle for us long term.

He’s got a lot of work to do to improve his game is how I’ll put it. His clangers and decision making deficiencies are very costly when you’re playing that central role in the middle. He is also very predictable with his movement.

I don’t put a lot of weight in tackle counts in a game where our midfield got destroyed and Newcombe did what he wanted for 3 quarters.

The problem for me last night with Long was having Anderson in the side with him. I haven't seen the stats, but I assume that Long got many more touches than Anderson and was the more effective player. I don't think both should play at the same time. We need to balance whichever one of them plays with someone much quicker and/or classier. Ned seems also to be caught more often in possession of the ball than in his early games when he was so often able to stand up in a tackle and still dispose of the ball. But Anderson is the player I'd be switching out of the team rather than Long.
