I think not

Yes I would actually. There are lots of nations out there which outstrip us quite comprehensively in pissweakness.

Sorry, I thought there was something called PRIDE IN PLAYING FOR YOUR COUNTRY. Obviously that only occurs when your team is not "pissweak".

I agree sbagman!

I saw an interview with him on a soccer show on SBS a couple of months back and it seemed that the main reason why he's quit playing for Australia is because Frank Farina wants to play him in a position that he doesn't want to play in. He's also chessed off how Farina chose Okon as captain instead of him, apparently Okon and Zelic don't get on well with each other. These are very pissweak excuses for not playing for your country, considering there are hundreds of thousands of Australians who aspire to represent this country in their chosen sport.
He seems to have a big ego and an over-inflated sense of self-importance. I wouldn't be surprised that if Australia do make the 2002 World Cup, he'll come crawling back to play in the glory matches and take a spot off someone who actually helped Australia reach the World Cup. If that's the case I reckon the Australian selectors should tell himto piss off if he doesn't participate in the qualifiers but tries to get into the World Cup squad, if (and that's a big IF) we make the World Cup, crossing my fingers! :D

Sbagman lets just remember, ned zelic missed a couple of games for 1860 munich to play in the Au vs Brazil series.

Not only did brazil bring there u/23 team but farina only used zelic for the first game, just imagine if zelic got injured in this pissweak friendly? there goes his club career.

So zelic risked his club career to play for australia in a FRIENDLY, and they hardly even used him!

So i can agree with zelic On why hes dissapoited with farina, but yea i do think hes a w***er :D

Yeah QT, OK he's disappointed with Farina. But to say that he'd rather play for Croatia is a slap in the face to all Australian soccer fans, not just Farina. Not exactly patriotic in a general sense either.

I can understand his frustrations, but to say that is bang out of order. Dokic copped a heap of flak for turning her back on Australia...

Told you! from news.com.au

Zelic does backflip

ESTRANGED Socceroo Ned Zelic wants to bury the hatchet with national coach Frank Farina and join Australia's campaign to reach next year's World Cup

. Just a week after claiming he'd rather play for Croatia, the 1860 Munich defender revealed in a stunning about turn: "I miss representing my country and I'd love to wear the green and gold again.

"If (national coach) Frank Farina can somehow show he's 100 per cent behind me, I'll make myself available without giving it a second's thought."

The one-time golden child of Australian soccer walked out on the national team 16 months ago after being dumped from the starting lineup for a friendly against Brazil in Melbourne.

Zelic claimed he'd been shown no respect and vowed not to play for his country again while Farina was at the helm. He now concedes his decision to pull down the shutters on his international career was made in undue haste.

"I've thought a lot about what happened and I've questioned whether it was worth ending 10 years with the national team for the sake of three days (of upset) in Melbourne," he confessed.

"I'm very stubborn but the ball is in my court to make myself available again – and that's what I'm trying to do.

"I'm keen to be back for the Confederations Cup (in June) and the World Cup campaign.

"I'm 29 and there's still a lot of football left in me – I've been watching the World Cup qualifiers between the Europeans on TV and I want to be part of it all."

Zelic, who has played both as a sweeper and in midfield for Australia at Olympic and senior level, last spoke with Farina a year ago when clear-the-air talks only succeeded in muddying the waters.

"I just want to know what's in Frank's mind," he added."It could be he's not interested in having me back. That's what I need to know. It might be as simple as him giving me a call. It's time to sort things out."

Sbagman,

You have no idea how close I was to replying with a "lol@sbagman" style remark, for what I considered a superb piss-take in your last post.... then I checked out news.com.au .... just in case it was true.... and i'm speechless. I'm still honestly think it's an April Fool's prank 5 days too late! .... what a.... w***er! ;)

Seriously, how can someone say he wants to play for Croatia one week earlier (which I think he's entitled to do though- if he's being truthful to himself), BUT then suddenly change his mind because he "saw a couple of qualifiers" and still expect to be taken seriously by the coach/administrators /fellow players/ public?

I didn't believe he was entirely at fault in that incident during the Brazil series (I am VERY cynical of Farina as a hypocritical/ stubborn/ arrogant w***er too... as you may have guessed ;)), and thought Ned may have been crucified by the media unfairly..... but that was before I realised he had no brains.

Reckon he's a gun player though, (by our standards) and it will be very interesting to see whether Farina will stick by the "we'll welcome him back with open arms philosophy- and if he does- how much of a run he actually gives him...... over to you Frankie. :)

Congrats on the 500, Westy.

Not sure about the whole thing about him wanting to play for Croatia. I thought it was a pretty churlish thing to say and as much as I admit I would love to have him in the team, if his heart's not in it, does he really deserve to be there? I kinda take exception to the implication that his Australian-ness is only worth something if he can get a run in the World Cup.... then again I'm working in Italy, so I should shut up.... :D

Cheers,
Sbagman.

I'm not the biggest football fan but I do still follow the sport a bit and I cant understand why Australia isn't good enough to play in the World Cup. Australia has a large ethnic background now and there are a lot of good Australian players, why do we never seem to get anywhere. We have a couple of good strikers, good goalies, average backs and fairly good midfielders and yet we dont win? Is this because they hardly ever play with each other? Anyway if one of you soccer gurus could explain it to me please DO SO!! :D

Sbagman,

Firstly, congrats on the big 4-2-8! :D

On the statement that he would rather play for Croatia thing.... I think you've been spot on. His comments over the past week or two indicate that he hasn't got any pride in wearing the green and gold at all, and that he's just after the glory of qualifying for the cup. I can't stand that, but I'm not going to say whether his talent (and value to the team) should overide this in deciding whether to accept him back, and it will be a difficult decision for everyone involved. I don't think he deserves a spot....

BUT- I would rather see the team succeed in qualifying for the WC with the help of ONE talented player who isn't there for the right reasons, rather than see them fail (effectively punishing all the other players/public) leaving lingering doubts that they could have made it.... had the shallow, unpatriotic, egotistical prick played. :D

Any Aussie playing pansy soccer instead of footy aint worth considering
