Griffiths -
Pros: has the size (200cm and 104kg), has a booming kick, potential to be very dangerous (3 goals on debut)
Cons: Can't get enough of the ball, confidence destroyed

Elton -
Pros: has the size (197cm and 97kg), great marking, good below the knees
Cons: absolutely atrocious kick for goal

Mcbean -
Pros: consistent and dangerous player, good at ground level, knows where the goals are
Cons: body will get smashed at afl level, and that will destroy his confidence

Astbury -
Pros: has the size, (195cm and 96kg), knows where the goals are (evident when he kicked 3 on debut)
Cons: Can't get enough of the ball, confidence destroyed
Wore the number 12 for a reason.

Dunno why people are stressing about Eltons goal kicking, its not lke anyone else in our team can kick straight

It's funny, we used to have one of the best kicking accuracies in the league, with Riewoldt, Vickery, King, Nahas, and Martin (and some now delisted players as well) all good kicks for goal. Some how it's just completely dropped off.

Apart from CHF & Ruck, do you see us with any other deficiency that we need to fill ?

Could always use more midfield depth, which then allows some of them to rest up forward and be dangerous, with others being used off HB to give us good ball use coming out of D50.

Had similar thoughts RT, can never have too much midfield depth. Increasingly though it's looking more like mids have to be able to play inside/outside and fill in in other locations too. Flexibility seems to be key.

We are 10 and 5.
6th on the ladder.
Have a reasonably stable side
The next 7 games will either make us or break us.
Haven't made finals in 12 years

.....and you want to trial some fringe players to see how they go?? This is what teams do when they have nothing left to play for!

Look, I don't so much mind your idea but the timing is terrible. Lets just back the guys who have got us to 10 and 5. As for Arnot and Vlas, its easier to bring in young, upcoming midfielders when you have 9-12 of them rotating during a game. Elton, Asbury and Griffiths are far harder to hide. They can be badly exposed.

Just because we're 10 and 5 doesn't mean there's no room for tinkering. Our forward line isn't exactly a well oiled machine - we're relying on forward pressure and repeated entries which has been effective to a point but as seen in the North game, can come undone. I'm all for the forward press, but we need a plan b if we're getting destroyed off half back. A CHF marking target would make us far more flexible. We need to find a) who on our list is capable of taking that step or b) who we can trade in to be that player. Why waste time deciphering which path we need to take?

buddy... i'd do that if we WEREN'T in the race towards the finals. gifting games are a nono at this point in our reign.

It's not a gift at all. We don't have a third tall, we don't even have a full time 2nd tall because Vickery has to go into the ruck. We need a third tall so the best 3rd tall at our club should be playing. A.Edwards is NOT TALL and thus shouldn't be playing that role. We should be picking from Astbury, Griffiths, Elton or McBean. The best one plays if their form drops the next best comes in. It is pretty simple and to say we don't gift games is incorrect. Vlastuin got games before players who were more deserving, played well in a few then his form dropped. I don't mind playing him because he has potential but the rule needs to be applied to all positions. We won't be winning a flag with the group we have on the field at the moment and one of the key players we need is another tall surely it would make sense to take the risk. We have been so far ahead in most games we have won this year that it wouldn't have made a difference if one of our young talls played.

The other issue I have is like you say "if we weren't in the race towards finals", we haven't been in the race for finals for the first 3 years of Hardwicks tenure yet a tall like Post played minimal games even when Vickery was injured. I honestly don't believe (based on our more recent recruiting record) that all the talls we have drafted so highly have been no good. Even Rance was considered no good right up until Hardwick was forced to play him as a backman permanently and then look he actually starts to play well with confidence. It's really not hard to see to find out about these big men we need to play them in their best position for half a season before we pass judgement but I feel it is almost too late for Astbury and Griffiths.

Thank you for articulating this. Pretty much sums up my whole point

We should play another tall this week if the weather is good. Without McPharlin we could put plenty of pressure on Dawson, Silvagni and Johnson, with Riewoldt, Vickery and [insert KPF]. I'd play Griffiths because his confidence would be quite low atm and I think a surprise call up might be what he needs!

Just draft one. When did we last use a pick on one. Troy Taylor, Dean MacDonald, Brett O'Hanlon? (late picks and a PSD pick) Lennon/Reynolds/Marsh. Use a decent pick to get quality.

Could always use more midfield depth, which then allows some of them to rest up forward and be dangerous, with others being used off HB to give us good ball use coming out of D50.
Correct. Sydney have about 13-14 mids running through flanks etc.

Add a small, crumbing forward at Jack's feet.

As much as I want Astbury, Griffiths, Elton and McBean to play in the seniors their Coburg form doesn't warrant anything. If they can't do anything at Coburg why would we want to give them games based on poor form? Arnot was demanding a game and his good form translated into doing a great role for the team. Like Dimma said, if you apply pressure like Arnot you'll get a game. What Edwards provides is work ethic, the willingness to provide a lead, a contest, forward pressure. Work ethic will get you a game, not potential. Edwards was demanding a game with his Coburg form and Mcguane wasn't doing so well.

If you continually want Mcbean to play seniors you're kidding yourself, once he plays on an AFL level defender he'd get smashed at every contest and get absolutely monstered. Do you want to destroy him now or preserve him for next year when he's bigger and stronger and can actually contribute in the seniors? The kid is in his first year and he's 200cm and built like a twig.

The reason why we didnt 'play' post was because he was a waste of space, he can mark and that's it, even Edwards can do that, but he can actually hit a target. It's no use taking a specky when you just kick the ball back to the opposition. He was a dud from the start.

And if you haven't noticed they are now defenders, bar Mcbean.

From Griffiths' Q&A section
Which skill do you need to most work on: spoiling
The guy has a defender's mindset now.

I'd love to see Griff or Elton (or even McBean) make some serious inroads either in the run home or next year and challenge for a spot in the forwardline. Jack, Vickery (ruck support) and one of these guys and we would have 3 KPFs that can play together for quite a few years :thumbsu:

So does the club - Leppa said today that Edwards was backup but because Griff and Elton haven't come on, he's playing.

I'd say defensive presence is a big factor in playing these natural forwards down back.

It's absolutely crucial they can defend, harass, and tackle, right now most of these developing tally are okay offensively, okay with spoiling, but inexperienced when the ball hits the ground and skilful half back flankers run the ball out.

I'd play Deledio at CHF. That's just me. With stints on the ball a la James Hird.

That's a very good, left of field idea.

He played everywhere as a junior and he would be an incredible CHF. Same height as Royce Hart.

In the air he'd be good against a key defender due to his pace, then when he ball hits the ground he would run circles around the talls.

With our midfield depth and him getting tagged so much I would do it :thumbsu:

You know you want to Dimma:

Anyone else think we should make a play for Jaksch? I reckon he's a goer, price would probably be pretty high but if he badly wants to come home it's worth a crack. Tiger supporter too IIRC
