Ah, that sucks, it's probably my favourite as well. I saw at some set lists from this year in Europe, I think, and he did play it, but they may have been at more intimate venue as you mentioned.

Yeah he was playing it at the beginning of the year but that was a smaller venue tour of Europe.

As Jim Docker mentioned, Decade is a good compilation to introduce someone to Neil Young, but really, the quality of his work throughout that period cannot be accurately compiled on a compilation album, even if it happens to be a triple album!

Everything from his self-titled debut in 1969 through to Rust Never Sleeps in 1979 is a must own, imo...

Or get Live Rust and Weld. Those 2 live albums give a pretty good overview up to Ragged Glory and Neil is better live than on record IMHO.

Just for the hell of it here's my top 7 Neil albums excluding the live albums:
Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
After The Goldrush
On The Beach
Rust Never Sleeps
Freedom
Ragged Glory
Sleeps With Angels

He went allright at BDO Auckland.

Hey guys....

I know nothing about Neil Young but I'm looking forward to seeing him at BDO....

In anticipation I'd like to study up on some material that he'll likely play..

Could someone reccomend maybe the 30ish most likely tunes he'd play..

Cheers :)

There are plenty of suggestions above this post - but 30ish songs is not gonna happen - Neil Young doesn't do three minute pop songs!

I hope you enjoy it - personally I can't wait - he's one of the greatest live musicians I have ever seen.

Possibly, but it would be fantastic in his sideshow full of passionate and dedicated fans as opposed to half-cut random bogans who only know Heart Of Gold and that song where he goes on about being in the desert on that horse with no name (Not a joke, unfortunately).

Plus, I don't think a tune like Revolution Blues would be much of a momentum killer. You are right though, I don't expect anything from the album to be played.

I'd wet myself if Revolution Blues was played. Been 22 years since its last airing.

I'm pretty sure we'll get the same setlist across all BDO gigs. Which doesn't bother me as I'm seeing him for the first time.

I grew up listening to Neil young in the 70's (born 1970), what can I say my folks were hippies! Especially i remember the Harvest album on high rotation in our home. As a result it always brings back great memories when I hear one of those songs. I especially like Heart of Gold, Harvest, and Old Man.

Yeah same, I'll be rapt with the current setlist anyway.

Just reading through your Neil Young reviews which you posted a link to a while back, and I'm glad to see you gave Trans and Landing On Water the kudos they deserve.

Both of these albums, I feel, get criticized more for their musical style (which, to be fair, has dated significantly) as opposed to the actual songwriting, which, whilst not at the peak at the time of these records, was still in very good shape and result in very well constructed songs for the most part...

Landing on Water is one of the albums that I had originally on vinyl before I updated and re bought Cd's. I hated it with a passion when it came out. It was unlistenable as far as I was concerned. I decided to give it another try a couple of years ago thinking that maybe I had been too harsh dismissing it so easily years before and I hated it even more.

I am listening to On the Beach as I type this and it is truly a magnificent album. I had Tonight's the Night on in the car on the way to work. I am going to work through my entire collection of Neil Young before I get on the plane on Tuesday when I fly to Melbourne to see him.

i love this man's stuff

it goes for 9 minutes

but..

"hello cowgirl in the sand

... HELLO COWGIRL IN THE SAND!"

others

"... we go rockin in the FREE WORLD!"

and

"harvest moon" - such a sad song :(

Trans is a funny one. I only bought the vinyl because I found it in a shop. And even though I expected to hate it - I loved it. Truly one of the most underrated albums of all time (if not THE most underrated).

As for Landing on Water - it's the same thing. Expected to hate it, but didn't at all. The sound takes a bit of getting used to, but the songs are there (IMHO).

Both are easily better than most of his recent albums.

He's some videos i took from the gold coast leg of the big day out.. Have to say that neil young was the best festival act ive seen, quite amazing.

Thanks for the links. Great stuff.

How were the crowd with Neil. If you believe some of the comments on the BDO thread, nobody will be watching him because he is an old man and everbody will be watching The Prodigy !

I was at the Nick Cave gig the other night and the sell out crowd had lots of very young people. I think there are a lot of genuine music fans that enjoy quality artists, especially if they have remained relevant as opposed to a quick cash grab reunion tour.

I think it will be the case for Neil.

Neil Young played again last night at the Myer Music Bowl to a packed appreciative audience. It was apparently 37 degrees when he started at around 9.00 and was 32 when he finished around 11.00.

My Morning Jacket were the support and were I think slightly better than their BDO appearance. They played to a sparse crowd though that was only coming in when they were on.

The setlist was:
1. Love And Only Love
2. Sea Change
3. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
4. I've Been Waiting For You
5. Spirit Road
6. Cortez The Killer
7. Cinnamon Girl
8. Mother Earth
9. The Needle And The Damage Done
10. Light A Candle
11. Four Strong Winds
12. Unknown Legend
band introductions
12. One Of These Days
13. Get Back To The Country
14. Words
15. Just Singing A Song
16. Rockin' In The Free World
--
17. A Day In The Life

Which was very different to the BDO setlist and they complemented each other very well for those who went to both. He started a bit more uncertainly than at the BDO perhaps because of the heat. I've Been Waiting For You, a song off his very first album was an early highlight. The early section climaxed with a blistering Cortez The Killer and Cinnamon Girl, both of which were probably marginally better than the BDO versions.

He did an acoustic section starting with Mother Earth which was delivered with feeling and even brought a tear to my eye. Light a Candle is a new song and IMHO ranks right up there with his best acoustic songs with a great haunting melody.

He got back to his electric guitar with Get Back to the Country which I think is off one of his 80s albums but is a great rollicking rockabilly tune. Words from the Harvest album was another highlight with Neil playing some long solos using his Grestch White Falcon guitar that I think used to belong to Roy Orbison. It ended as the BDO ended with a dynamic Rockin in the Free World and an explosive A Day in the Life which again ended with Neil ripping the strings off his guitar. Apparently he did Like a Hurricane and Down By The River during the soundcheck but didn't play them in the concert proper mores the pity but I can't really blame him because the heat was so oppressive and he played for almost 2 hours as it was.

The audience was fantastic, getting right into the music and Neil clearly fed off the energy.

I was there last night and man it was hot. Probably the hottest I've felt at a night time gig. I was wondering how he would cope and whether it might get to him but he was rocking a hard as ever.
Good to se an old rocker up on stage jumping around and seeming to be really enjoying himself.
Cortez The Killer was outstanding I thought as was Needle And The Damage Done which still has all the emotion as the orginal. This song seems to end to soon IMO but perhaps that is the pont.

Overall fantastic night and Neil is still Rockin hard as ever.

It was one of the best things I have ever seen.

**** it was good. Was reeling afterwards.

The old man has still got it!
