great news IMO.

it's a shame that these minnow tournaments don't get the airplay they probably deserve. i'd watch it if it were available somewhere

Some of the matches have been streamed live on the ICC website. The play-offs are being broadcast on tv, but not in Australia unfortunately.

It would be a great if these qualified teams would get a good go in the tournament proper though. Pity though the ICC have forced them into another 'qualifier' with Bangladesh and Zimbabwe at the start of the tournament. Essentially now both the WT20 and Cricket World Cup (after 2015) will be only 10 team affairs.

UAE also through for their first international tournament since the 1996 world cup (I think?)
They join Ireland and Afghanistan who have already qualified.

I had my "international" debut (and swansong) against the UAE Academy a few years back playing for the Primary Club of Aust. :)

All Pakistanis from memory.

Ireland

Nepal
UAE
Hong Kong
Netherlands

Very different group to what we usually see qualify for ICC events. No Canada or Kenya who are usually mainstays, and Namibia's cricket has been woeful in the last year or so since the last World T20 Qualifier (which they came 2nd to Ireland). All six now move onto the first round of the World T20, competing for the final 4 places in the main draw against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. Really disappointing to see Hong Kong defeat PNG tonight for the fifth spot.

Could easily see Zimbabwe or Bangladesh miss out, they're both pretty terrible at T20s. I reckon the four will be Ireland, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Netherlands.

Which means cricket can have a positive influence in these countries. :thumbsu:

Cricket in Nepal is apparently close to cricket in Bangladesh in terms of popularity

I don't mind if Zimbabwe get up (Bangladesh aren't as bad as portrayed) I just like that they are being forced to earnt their spot!

i think you'll find it's only 2 of these 8 that progress, making the second stage 10 teams.

Zimbabwe and Bangladesh will be the favorites but will have stiff competition from Ireland and Afghanistan.

Interesting to see Scotland, Canada and Kenya missout.
Namibia and PNG are on the rise as well.

Wow, you're right actually. I thought for sure they'd retain the 12 team format for the WT20. That's disappointing. I hate seeing Kenya miss out, they are the Associate ODI nation that is genuinely removed from the established cricketing world with home-grown players. And 42yo Steve Tikolo was one of the leading players of this tournament.

Zimbabwe one of the favourites to go through? I'd expect Ireland to beat them in any format in any conditions. PNG's rise is very exciting, I agree.

kenya are my fave minnow - have been since 1996 world cup :-)

not sure why zimbabwe and bangladesh have to go through qualifying (they are test nations afterall) - there may be a gap from the "big 8" but the ICC continue to treat them with disrespect eg. only 2 test series and always against the same sides, i mean bangladesh have never toured india for a test series yet and australia have never hosted them in an aussie summer etc etc.

Considering how difficult it is to get test status and so difficult to lose it they should have to actually put it to good use rather than get automatic entry and lose every match.
