At a function at AAMI last Friday night Kevin Sheedy suggested that every set of goal posts around the country should have nets erected behind them in an effort to hone the goal kicking skills of children across the land.

You’d have to agree that one of the reasons that goal kicking is atrocious is that kids are loath to kick the ball :

a) across the road
b) up in the trees
c) into the stands
d) over the fence
e) so far away I’ve got to retrieve it

If they didn’t have to do that then perhaps there would be more practice and ultimately better skills in the game.

Interesting idea.;)

I just thought Id throw it out there to see if this morgue-board can come to life.

Whaddayareckon:confused:

i think it's a good idea...back when i was a kid, i got hit in the face with a rogue football just for walking across the oval behind the goals... :(
but it's a good idea so it doesn't go over the fence or onto roads...
if the idea is so we don't have to run as far to retrieve it, then that's just damn lazy.

Don't know how valid this comment is.
I would have thought that most kids love having shots at goal, as this is the more attractive part of the game.
However most of the shots taken by young kids are on tough angles, trying to do the impossible, instead of set shots, and simple on the run goals.
My thoughts anyway.

Interesting idea but would never work. The nets would have to be colossal for it to have any effect. Not to mention the trouble of setting it up, maintaining it, etc. You could also guarentee kids would go and climb up nets, can see the outcry now if a kid was to fall off one trying to climb it.
Just seems way too much trouble. Best to just stick to the old fashion way of fetching for the ball after you kick it :D

lol, never thought of that...though that would be a lot of fun.

And how long will it take before idiot vandals cut holes in the nets or rip them down?

Or climbs up and falls off and breaks a leg/arm/shoulder.

I think the idea definately has some merit, but I dont agree that kids are loathe to have shots at goal.

Yep, same here. When I was a kid, we would have shots at goal all the time, knowing full well that we'd have to go fetch. Either that, or we'd take turns sitting behind the goals while mates had their shots. I think Sheeds is forgetting how much energy kids actually have.

This will never happen, but I like that Sheedy is trying to think of things outside the square to make the game better (this, and the aboriginals off the salary cap idea). We need forward thinkers involved in the game, to contrast against the nothing-but-financial thinkers, such as Dimitriou.

Perhaps loathe was the wrong word... Less likely to kick the ball off the arena.

You can always practice short kicking into goals too... with a net.;).. I nevr thought about people climbing up it:o
