Now this may sound like a bit of a stupid question, but I know there will be enough people her to answer it :)

I've just recently bought a laptop, and my main aim now is to network the laptop so i can use my PC's internet/printer/file sharing. From my own knowledge I thought to buy both a standard router and a wireless router, so i can have the speed when i need it but the flexibility of wireless.

Now here's the part where i'm not sure of, how would i connect this up so this is possible....or if anyone else has a better suggestion :)

Cheers in advance.

How many wired computers want to connect to the wired router? Because my wireless router has 4 wired ports so I can use the wireless or wires...

I have my home office setup as such:

Modem -> Router -> Wireless router

The router has 8 ports, the wireless has 4, (plus unlimieted wireless).

I have four desktops and a printer running off the router, and a printer running off the wireless router, with up to four notebooks running off the wireless.

The wireless literally runs from a cord through the router, to the modem. It could do the job itself, but the one I bought can't operate by itself due to some sort of conflict between the printers and the network (yet they run fine filtered through the router).

simple!

you buy a standard wireless router.
you connect to the wireless network through your laptop.
you connect the printer to the desktop and any other shared network resources.
in windows you goto prints, and select the destination printer, which might be \\networkpc1\printer1

the wireless router directs all internet traffic, so you don't need to connect through the pc to get internet connection.
make sure you use the printer through a computer.

and use wpa encryption on wireless network, not wep

Cheers for that VB, but the only thing that i would like in addition is a wired port, so that i can have the fast speed for downloading....i only really want wireless so i can use it over the house, but i'll be using the wired when downloading stuff..

Would this here do the same job.....just a bit cheaper is all.

Do you have a RangeMax wireless adapter? If not, then no. You will still get normal speeds if you dont have the RangeMax wireless adapter.

Ahh, so basically it would just serve the same purpose as the D-Link router....because i dont have the adaptor for my laptop....hmmmm interesting?
god the really try to screw you over hey.

Not really - it is like any other hardware... You cant use 802.11n routers without an n card, same as g, etc.

Ohh, well my laptop has 802.11b/g networking.....so that should mean that I would be able to use the router.....or could i only use the d-link router

this is WAY all too confusing.

Just get the D-Link or the Netgear DG834G, any g router.
