Yep, I have the same recollection.

Looking at his stats. He didn't get much of the ball. Didn't really tackle. Not a consistent goal kicker.

Up until the last 5 - 10 years or so, not many small forwards got much of the ball nor that many tackles. Small forwards applying ballistic frontal pressure and pushing further up the ground has been a gradual thing that has come in over the last decade. The good ones have always been consistent goalkickers though.
