New $5 note

I remember reading somewhere that they're reluctant to introduce a $5 because people tend to horde coins, so there's always a lot more out of circulation at any one time.

I had a couple of CHF200 notes (Swiss Franc) in my wallet last year. At the time that was about $290 per note. I've had an EUR100 note but never a 200 or 500.

Australian banknotes are already among the most diverse in the world in terms of representing women.

This is something US banknotes have a major problem.

Shame, but having a stable currency with low inflation is good.

The Euro has 200 and 500 notes which are worth about $300 and $750 and our top note is $100 but whenever I have one I feel like a high roller. Or drug dealer. Apparently the $100 note makes up 15-20% of the total notes in circulation (quantity of notes not dollar value) but it feels less than that. I've taken $500 or more out of an ATM maybe 20 or so times in my life and I reckon only two or three times $100 notes have spat out.

Because if you lose that note you're screwed.

I always want smaller notes. I'd break a fifty more often than not.

If you try to use a large denomination note overseas often it won't be accepted or they'll give it a thorough examination to make sure it isn't counterfeit.

Pretty hard to counterfeit an Aussie banknote but $100 notes are a pain in the arse to small businesses dealing in transactions under $10.

Whip out a 100 and people wait for you to pass a dark alley.

I have more issues with minimum amounts before you can use EFTPOS.

Businesses, especially small ones, don't like operating with large cash floats and $100 notes mess with that if you get too many on a given day

I work in a pretty big retailer, and even then $100 notes are a bit of a pain. I'd much rather have 2 $50s in my till, and I can easily see how they could completely throw out a smaller turnover till.

It's about what they're buying. Plenty of smaller retail shops run with very small floats for security reasons, eg. A few 20s, 10s and 5s to start the day.

Shops don't refuse $100 notes just because they're $100 notes, they refuse them because it screws their cash/change float. If someone's buying a $90 item, no one's going to turn back a hundo. The problem is when people try to buy a $5 item at 9:05am and smack a hundo on the counter. There goes your 3 20s, 3 10s, and one of your 5s.
