The reactions to this seem to be a form of madness, people seem to have become lost in some mire of moral indignation that I can't really understand.
I just don't really get it. When you present people with all the evidence that this sort of thing is done all the time in professional cricket and barely taken seriously by the ICC they just repeat that this makes no difference. Strange

AB is getting on, you need someone that genuinely believes they can still do it.

Will be long team meetings as Deano gives a ball by ball rundown of his 210 in Madras every day to inspire the lads

Think we have two choices with this one

If we want the least amount of disruption possible then Paine is the logical and possible only choice

If we want the best captain then it may be a case of someone like Bailey being recalled if we need a longer term option

Either way whoever it is will need to be pretty resilient.
Then we have the question of whether Smith is reinstated coming back in

I would go with Paine , if he works out and I think he can he may well be a decent 2-3 year option

It's largely because of the wishy-washy sounding presser Smith did I think, and also the way he seemed to let Bancroft take responsibility while paradoxically implicating senior leadership planned it. Going "This is the first time this happened and it's... uh... not on" or whatever just comes across bad, if he had have said the same it's the first time it happened and we're disappointed, but also pointed out that ball tampering was rife in an eloquent way it might not have blown up as much.

In some ways it's like Cook and his side pissing on the pitch, it wasn't as big of a deal as the media made it, but at the end of the day Captaincy is a PR/political position to a certain extent and you've got to be able to gauge and manipulate the optics of things so that you don't lose the public.

How has everyone here missed the obvious - MAXY! The Big Show has to be the saviour. Do it now!
Not me,hope the test selectors get their heads out of the sand and stop playing politics.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I am appalled by a national sporting team - one that I have followed for nearly 50 years incidentally - engaging in pre-meditated cheating, said cheating being led and/or instigated by the captain.

That may help you understand.

This could be the important reset our squad needs. Let's not bring in proven failures and journeymen.............bring in the kids

I agree. There is no excuse for the decision to cheat .... plenty of reasons maybe, but no excuses can be accepted. We've shat in our own bed, now we have to sleep in it.

I can think of a number of reasons which may have led to this decision, some of them understandable, but when it came to the decision to actually cheat ourselves, then that's when common sense should have taken control of the matter. "Should we start tampering with the ball as other countries do?". The answer should have been, "No. We cannot dignify what others may have done by doing it ourselves".

I have long argued the point that there seems to be this attitude in the cricket world that Australia is responsible for everything bad in the game, and this simply isn't true. By committing this sin, it has now given the rest of the cricket world kerosene to dump on the fire. Other cricketing nations, all of whom have been guilty of equal or worse atrocities over the years are having a field day.

There was one comment I heard today which annoyed me. It came from someone whose opinions I have no time for, Graeme Swan, a card carrying Australian hater. He claimed Australia have always been so pious in their attitude and looked down their noses at other cricketing nations. That really is a bit rich coming from an English Test cricketer. For some unknown reason, English cricket have always regarded themselves as the epitome of good grace in cricket and others should follow their lead .... or at least do as they say, not as they do.

I cannot abide what the Australian players and leadership group did. It is wrong. They are guilty and should be penalised. One thing that can be said in Australia's favour is at least they are the whiskey priests of cricket. They at least know they've done wrong, owned up to it, and taken steps to remedy the situation. This is one area other cricket nations could learn from. Some still have cheats captaining their Test teams.

All I know is, I've had enough of international cricket. All it has turned into is war without guns, as if the main objective is to offend the other nation. Diplomacy flew out the window decades ago. I have been offended by many things other nations have done over the years, now I'm offended by my own country.

International cricket has been a very large part of my life for over 50 years. Not any more. I haven't been pleased with the direction Australian Cricket has been taking for quite some time, this was just the icing on the cake, the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. Local cricket is the only thing I will support in future.

I think they will definitely fast track someone like Head into the team, maybe even Wade as a specialist batsman. Not as captain yet, but just to get established in the team (re-established in Wade's case) to provide CA with multiple longer term options.

I don't think there's any need for Bailey when you have Paine. He has captained plenty, if Bailey was in slightly better form it might be worth it. Paine as captain and MM as VC seems logical, if when Paine goes MM has cemented his spot he can take over, no need to put extra pressure on him now.

Australia's next test squad.

Think they will stick with Paine, given the lack of suitable candidates; he's even played well enough to figure his spot is safe for a couple of years. Mitch Marsh as vice, which is a little crazy, cause he's hardly cemented his spot either. Maybe Lyon if he's show to have had no involvement whatsoever.

But are there any captaincy candidates coming up through the ranks? Ashton Turner, maybe?

Might be room for a solid senior first-class player, ala Rogers (how good would that be right now...) to come in.

Now's not the time to bring in kids and throw them under a bus with 0 leadership.

Also time that Lehmann resigned. JL can take control of this squad.

Yeah Wade will really change the culture
