Can anyone imagine 6 months ago Paine would be captain of Australia?
Mind you in the circumstances I am happy with him, seems a good guy.
The big positive of all this is no more Warner
Not to mention Mitch Marsh's name being considered in the conversation of who should be captain/vice captain.
Yep, it's been a bizarre chain of events. Who saw Chris Rogers coming back into the fold in 2013 then going on to play 25 tests? Or Mitchell Johnson not only coming back for the 2013/14 Ashes but putting on the most dominant 5 test series of pace you'll see?
Paine does seem like a good guy and is unlucky to have only played 10 tests. Similar to Mitch Marsh was earmarked for international honours pretty early on but then was injured at the wrong time. I thought Marsh looked solid in his first few tests but lost form and confidence and the selectors dicked him around a bit picking Watson then bringing him back when Watson failed etc. and was a liability in the India series - but then his brother was pretty ordinary and is now our most reliable batsman by default.
Our likely top 6 will be Burns, Renshaw, Khawaja, S Marsh, Handscomb, M Marsh for the 4th test. Perhaps Maxwell but if we're not going to pick Handscomb with 3 batsmen going out at once then why take him on tour? That's an absurdly inexperienced top 6 in tests played. The last time we had a captain who was primarily a bowler was Richie Benaud in the 1960s. On paper it would be Shaun Marsh, but he doesn't captain WA and is a very quiet guy. Khawaja the next most experienced and he's out of form. Then Mitch Marsh who has been back in for half a dozen tests and 3 guys who haven't played this year. Slim pickings.
Not sure why Nathan Lyon's name hasn't come up. He's the most experienced player in the side and seems to have a good temperament.
