When you look at technique and temperament we have seriously failed picking Head, M Marsh and Finch, so i don’t think the selectors have even picked the right types at all. Yeah I’d go back to Burns, Wade and Maxwell. At least they’ve got the runs. I mean we only lost Adelaide by 30 runs, picking a more established type might have been able to turn 20 into 60 and got us home.

What are your thoughts on White?
Cameron White is 35 and there's a less compelling case for him than the likes of Burns, Maxwell, Wade etc. He has a career average of 40 and a Shield average this season of 41. To get a call-up at his age, he has to be doing Voges-like numbers, which he isn't. The cupboard is relatively bare, the only players I think are in the mix are Harris, Renshaw, Bancroft, Khawaja, Patterson, SMarsh, Head, Handscomb, Wade, Burns, Maxwell, with Dan Hughes and Jake Lehmann real outside chances. We need six batsmen out of that lot.

I do believe we need a bowler able to bowl genuine heat.
Cummins?

Starc can bowl 150 and rattle any batsman.
But his big weapon was his swing which seems to have evaporated with the more recent set of injuries, or since we stopped ball-tampering.

How's Tremain's pace? Is Coulter-Nile worth a look?
Coults isn't playing long form at the moment due to persistant back troubles. From what I know of Tremain, he's one of those McGrath-speed line and length bowlers, similar to Hazlewood.

Jhye Richardson is proper quick though.

See this is what I don’t get. Why does he need to be doing Voges like numbers when he is performing as one of the best at shield level and Head isn’t?

The approach to selection of 1-7 has barely changed since Waugh's Untouchables. Pick 5 guys who are anchored in the side, pick a keeper, pick one guy to develop. It's why there were a tonne of guys who couldn't get a test although dominating the Shield.

Fast forward two decades and it's still harder for some blokes to get out of the squad, and the ones that get in are the development players. None of this is a refleciton on Langer though.

Side note, as great as cricinfo is for a stats site, it'd be really nice to have a season by season (or year by year) breakdown of a player's stats like they do in pretty much every other major sport.

If you go into advanced search, there is more stuff available there.

Selecting Voges was not a bad call and I don't remember anyone at the time critising it. He was in incredible form and he repaid the faith with a ton in his first game in a match we could've potentially lost if he didn't deliver.

The blunder was not dropping him after England where he was shown to be out of his depth and wasn't going to be a benefit for us like Rogers was. They persisted with him in series where it was the perfect time to rebuild and then panicked overnight when we lost a series at home like that had never been on the cards to begin with.

I think we've seen enough of Burns and Wade at Test level to know they're not going to walk back into the Team and do much more then they did last time. Burns really looked in trouble against competent bowling and Wade couldn't even make it as a keeper/bat over nearly 30 Test matches. To suggest he's going to walk back in after a couple of decent seasons and be a success as a specialist bat is quite laughable. It's easy to say we don't know until we try but its an experiment that isn't worth bothering with IMO. I think his only chance of a recall is he's still the only in form keeper when Paine retires. Carey averages in the 20s so he's no guarantee to walk in.
Burns looked awful against competent bowling I agree, no real plan. Hopefully he might have tightened up somewhat?

Because he's not doing as well as you think and when you only have a year or two at best, you have to be doing significantly larger numbers than players with much more time in the game. He's averaging 41 this season, that puts him down the list of best performed players this season, he's not even in the top 10 for averages.

If I click a player's name on the NHL website I get a year by year rundown of their stats with totals at the bottom. For a game that is utterly built around statistics, websites dealing with the sport are utterly shite at displaying the wealth of information easily.

And that's just it; on the main and stats page of cricinfo there's literally nothing named 'advanced search'. Statsguru (which I'm aware of because I've used the site for years) doesn't easily report first class data.

If I look at Joe Burns, and note that he's got a first class average slightly above 40 and wonder why he's not getting an international game (compared to the current Australian top 7), I can't easily note that he was pretty rubbish in 16-17, and has since turned it around this summer. Compare this will googling a random hockey player, say Pavel Bure, and in a click I can find he scored 17 goals in 88-89, and had 35 two seasons later (suggesting improvement).

Cricinfo is poor on first class data. I've used http://cricketarchive.com/ - it's not that easy to use as a resource but it's got a hell of a lot of domestic stats and you can track form. Is that what you've used on Burns?

In light of Langer getting 'grumpy' at a reporter over Maxwell, I found this interesting reading:
Simmons told ESPNcricinfo he was offered a contract "six times" his Scorchers deal by the Strikers for BBL04, and he still "took a week to think about it". Simmons was plucked out of club cricket by Langer; he was fixing power lines at night at the time. "If I was 26, I probably would have stayed with the Scorchers, despite the money," he said. When Simmons left, Langer said he was "shocked and disappointed" and privately he was said to be incandescent with rage. Those who know Langer well say anger is often his first response before others cool him down. Simmons said it took Langer about a month to warm to him again.

LOL

You're not up to it champ.
Just coming off 10 wins in a row and lose to the number 2 seeds.

Give me a spell.
Don’t champ me okay.
I didn’t want him from the start. State coach failure. Never won the shield.

Lost at home to India in tests. Likely to surrender the Ashes. Nearly lost to the Windies the other night.

Stuffed the WC squad. Didn’t pick Handscomb. Won’t select Marsh over Stoinis. Won’t drop Warner. Refused to send Maxy up the order last night when it was clearly required.

I don’t trust a man to get us back to the top in tests when he can’t even get WA to the top in the shield.

Jason Gillespie on the other hand. Now there’s a good coach

This is an ODI tournament, his WA team won the OD tournament twice.

They did, and yet he’s making poor squad and team selections that’s not maximising the chances of success.

I have no belief in JL as coach.
