New Badges/Medals System

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

With the passing of our old medals system, we have picked up the system that has the best development support.

It operates differently to the old system, but it also has some cool new features.

* You can find your own badges on your profile page -> Badges tab.

* On your list of badges under your profile page, you can click the little loudspeaker icon beside the badge name to feature it on your user info section beside/above each post. You can feature up to 8 badges.

* On the back end, we can automatically apply badges based on things like years of membership or number of posts. Those Brown Dog badges can be applied automatically now.

* We can apply badges based on your answers to your profile questions. You can wave your T20 cricket club flag automatically, or your NFL team logo. All that stuff. You get to choose.

* One downside is the featured badges are squished up horizontally a little. From here on, we can have taller badges but they need to be closer to square than not. Many existing badges will need to be reformatted - there are hundreds so it will take time.

* You can see a full list of available badges via Help -> Badges. The Help link is in the footer of the page.

Thanks everyone.

Badge Makers

Previously badges were maximum 12 pixels high. We can bump that up to 16 pixels from now on.

Badges can therefore be any width, and you can create them in any height, but they will be reduced to 16 pixels high maximum. Aim for 16 to 32 pixels in height and width, but if they are too intricate they might not come out very sharp at the lower resolution.

You can supply 4 different sizes for different resolution screens. These are:
  • Maximum 16x16 pixels
  • Maximum 32x32
  • Maximum 48x48
  • Maximum 64x64

Does that mean we need to go through and re-design all of the rectangular badges? Is there a maximum width?
You can if you like. Depends if you're bothered by how they look as featured badges.

If you want them square, you can provide them in 4 sizes for different screen resolutions:
  • Maximum 16x16 pixels
  • Maximum 32x32
  • Maximum 48x48
  • Maximum 64x64

They all look fine now? Like they did before no?
If they're less than 22px in either direction then the individual badges look fine, although the gaps between them hurt my eyes. I guess the gaps will be less when all the 12x12 badges are redesigned to work as 22x22 instead.

If you look at my player sponsor ones though, for example, they're normally like 12x50 and they've been scaled down to 5x22, which makes them illegible without a magnifying glass. Same problem with lots of other badges that are wider than they are tall, including the 100k badge that Chief has, and your POTY badge, though they weren't so wide in the first place so it's less obvious: they've been reduced to 7px and 9px tall respectively.

It's going to be a fair bit of work to redesign them all...

I will probablyjust use 16x16 - 64x64.

I'm not worried if someone wants to go up to 22x22.

This addon is now being changed a bit with an influx of new users and their needs after the old badge system died.

Maybe we can reduce the gap in the flex boxes. Maybe. If I hack at it then I have to re-do the hacks each time I update it I think.

Yeah the sponsorship ones are smaller, I dunno if the rest bothers me, I don’t mind the gaps if they are a pain in the arse to fix.

Pretty much, but we can raise the size a little bit, and longer badges are squished up a bit.
Looking at the Fantasy Badges, 12 pixels x 30 pixels .....they look to have held their aspic ratio ?

So I'm assuming if we raise the height to 15 pixels x 30 pixels, should the aspic ratio also remain unaltered ?

Also, we used to be able to shuffle the order of badges ....can't see a way of doing that now, will that function be re-introduced ?

Order changing - I will ask for the feature to be added.
Noticed all badges are included in your user info section by default .....clicking the loudspeaker icon appears to then only apply the badges you have loudspeaker turned on ....in the order you click the loudspeaker

Bit confusing to most users, but it appears you can affect badge order

What dimensions did you use ? ....I have to redo all the Fantasy Badges

I actually used 22x22 which seems to be the full width of the container for the badges under people's names, which I based on the fact the 100,000 post badge is 22x22. I assume it can be scaled from there for different resolutions...

Second post in this thread:

Read that .....but then Lore was talking 22 x 22 sizing

The Fantasy badges have retained their horizontal look ....so I'm wondering how I can go 16 pixels high and still maintain the horizontal look

As I've said in the second post - those are the dimensions I prefer. I will use 22x22 etc but I cannot guarantee they will look any good in the long run. They might. I'm not sure. It's a new system that we had to go into blindly as they didn't have a data import feature ready when we upgraded the site.

Given it's a new system, and there's a bit of learning to occur .....I might wait till the end of next season to update

The ones I did should be okay, I tried scaling the original images up, and if they looked like sh1t then I googled a duplicate emoji and scaled it down instead. If it still looked like shit then I chose a slightly different one until it looked okay 😛 Some versions of the flower have a giant stamen that looks really weird, or the petals all merge into each other when reduced in size and looks like a blob.

anything wider than 22 pixels will be resized to 22 pixels wide and not look as crisp as it could.

Understood ....I'll keep at 22 wide and keep under 16 high to maintain the badge's current aspic ratio
