I would like to suggest Barry Hall as a candidate for Captain. I think he has leadership potential, he is still young (he should be around for another 5 or 6 years) and I believe the responsibility would settle him down.
I have thought about this for the last 6 weeks and the more I think about it the more I like the idea. What do you think?

Hall

It's a very silly idea. He's been at the club for 1 year. Nicks, Maxfield, Saddington, O'Loughlin are by far better candidates.

No.

If Barry can settle down and refrain from doing anything stupid and getting himself suspended, I'll be happy with that.

The captaincy is an extra burden that he doesn't need.

i think that Ben Mathews would make a great captain.
Barry hall, i am not so sure about - he'd be a good captain but his temper and reputation may work against him there.
Jason Saddington is too young and doesn't have enough experience to captain, maybe in a few more years.
Players like Maxfield are getting too old and we need someone who is injury free and will be at the club 10 more years, not players that will retire in the next couple of seasons.
i agree micky would also be a great choice for captain, micks would relish the chance to lead the side.
i don't think Nicksy would make a good captain.
Then u have players like Goodes or Jude that could also be very good captains if given the oppurtunity.
i think if the selectors pick wisely that the swans will have a very good captain for the future of the club.

O'Loughlin seems to be the obvious choice for captain given his age (young enough to have many years left to play, but old enough to have plenty of experience), but his actual effectiveness as a leader is questionable at the moment. He can be very negative out on the field, dropping his head when he is down and criticising teammates when they make errors. That sort of thing is damaging to team morale.

Meanwhile, Maxfield is probably a little too old to be captain, especially when the club is in a rebuilding phase, while Nicks hit very poor form last season and is no longer guaranteed of a first team spot. Since that takes care of the current vice captains, it is necessary to look elsewhere to find potential candidates, and I still think Saddington is an outside chance. He is rarely hit by injuries, and has played more games and seasons than Kelly had under his belt when he was named captain. Better yet, he is just the sort of player the club needs to hang onto to ensure it is a finals chance in the future, and what better way to seal a player's loyalty than by naming him captain?

He's a good forward, but he's a fiery character and prone to the odd brain explosion. Not what you want from a captain.
Nicks or O'Loughlin would be the obvious choices - and I'd favour O'Loughlin. Nicks didn't have the best of seasons this year; although it'd be unfortunate for him if that lean patch of form was to cost him the captaincy.
Benny Mathews could be a possibility as well, and when the Swans gave him Plugger's old number 4 they indicated then he could be a potential future leader. At 24 he's probably still a bit young and inexperienced - Kelly was even younger when he got the job but the circumstances around the club were very different then.

Barry Hall - which idiot suggested that one.

:D

Stuart Maxfield he's a pussy and too old.

;)

Paul Williams or Saddington for my money both have the necessary qualifications to do the job.

I firmly believe that the responsiblity of captaincy would be the tonic Barry needs to make him settle his temper down. Also playing him at centre half forward would give the team benefit of his strong marking. This would be a position where he could take control and lead the team.

:p
So you are the dropkick who made the original suggestion - we reward a person who lacks the maturiry required to be captain so he may or may not grow up in the process - a risk we shouldnt be even considering.

As for the others Maxfield is far too old and a tosser. Cresswell hasnt got leadership aspirations and it seems to come down to Williams and Saddington with the latter being considered too young for some. but both are infinitely better than the other 2 mentioned.

;)

i think that andrew schauble would be a great captain, not sure about his role at the pies.
are there any other suggestions for captain or vice captain?

Schauble has leadership qualities, but unfortunately I wouldn't trust his hamstrings enough to take the top job, and he's probably behind Michael O'Loughlin in the same age group.

I think Willo is the way to go. He's a little safer than Maxi, who may not be there in two years. Willo will be there 3 at the least. Goodes as vice-captain, Schauble, Crouch and O'Loughlin as deputy vice-captains. I think the leadership model was close to perfect in 97-98, when we had PK and Dunks, plus Plugger, Lewis and I think Cresswell as deputy-vice captains. I think we should bring that model back.
