It's time. It will be a great relief for Riewoldt. A captain needs to be someone who is mentally strong. Currently Riewoldt's kicking for goal leaves much to be desired. It does not make sense. His field kicking is excellent and accurate, yet it's a different story when he is lining up for the big sticks. Seems all mental.

Lenny should of been the captain for the last two years. Is he too old? Maybe. Could still be an inspirational captain for 1-2 years. Goddard is the next logical choice.

Could be a win/win situation for everyone if St.kilda has a new captain. Roo will still be a leader and it might relief some pressure of him.

It appears the KD story is still affecting him, along with poor performance is the grand final replay. Although you could say he played on one leg for the last 6-8 weeks, it does not explian such poor goalkicking.

Thoughts? Lenny for captain?

YES PLEASE!! I cant bare going to games knowing our captain will be the one letting the team down. Fact of the matter is he misses crucial shots at goal and therefore does not lead from the front. BJ for captain and Rooey can use the extra time he has on his goal kicking which he gets paid plenty for!!!

Hayes is too old. Just let him concentrate on his football. Whatever role he can play will happen anyway.

Riewoldt is mentally wrecked. Surely he understands that he has too much baggage to fill the role anymore. For his sake and ours.

Goddard is too hotheaded and is often sucked into doing stupid things. I love the example he sets but he can't lead us in that way. It will be disastrous.

My vote is Sam Fisher or Nick Dal Santo.

Agree 100%. This approach is certainly working for Ricky Ponting. I would personally prefer Dal Santo as captain over Goddard. Co-Captains perhaps? Make it more of a team effort

Yeah I think it could be a good time for a change of captain to start a new era and help take some of the burden off Riewoldt.

Goddard seems to be the obvious candidate, he's the perfect age to take over the role and I think he'd be a good on and off field leader. Giving him the captaincy should also convince him to stay on at the club past next year.

Hayes, Fisher and Dal Santo would be the other main candidates but all are about the same age or older than Riewoldt so it would be more of a temporary sideways move than starting a new era.

So we bring in someone else as captain and have a thread next year about said player being hampered by the captaincy and they should offload it. Look at both sides.

That will depend on many factors. At least with Goddard or Dal Santo they will not be missing easy shots on goal at a consistent basis. They are both nice kicks for goal.

That's how we select the captain now is it? A pre-season goalkicking competition?

Cos BJ has really excelled this year with the extra weight of expectations on him..... If for some unknown reason Roo decided he wants to let someone else take over then it should be Dal Santo or Fisher.

BJ can handle it better IMO

That's a bit glib for you, Guide.

I think it's fascinating that three people have taken the clear bulk of media obligations this year - BJ, Ross Lyon and, of late, Jason Blake. There has obviously been an attempt to shield Roo from the media, and I don't think we can justify having to do that for a captain. Ross can't be captain, Blake will be lucky to have a spot on the list for 2012 (although I think they'll keep him), so that leaves BJ.

If everything was right with Roo, there's no way they would have effectively had a media blackout on him this year. There's a long history in all sorts of sports of relieving a guy of the captaincy late in his career to let him concentrate on his own form. I think it would benefit him and the team. I could be wrong, but I think it's a very legitimate suggestion to make.

How is it glib?

Are you telling me that people won't be calling for the next captain to hand it in if their form dips?

No one considers this. It's a highly relevant point.

Instead I hear so called Saints "fans" on Saturday night demanding we trade Riewoldt, terrible captain, etc.

So excuse me whilst I buck the trend and back a guy in.

The question shouldn't be if someone else can be a better captain than Roo but wheather Roo would be better without the captaincy? I have no doubt that Roo would be his own worst critic. He would be so hard on himself, even though he's clearly been injured, he'll take all that pressure on his shoulders and deal with it.
He could go away, fix his injuries, freshen up physically and mentally and get back to 09-10 form and then we'll all be saying what a champion captain he is.

Look, Lenny has been vice-captain to Riewoldt for the last couple of years and has done a magnificant job on the field. With Lenny going down so early this season it threw the whole leadership issue into chaos.

I don't think anyone really put up their hand this year and said I'll fill the gap. So, if Lenny comes back next year I don't think leadership will be an issue.

Also, I'm not sure Lenny would want the captaincy. He's been captain before but I think he's happy being vice-captain- there's certainly less onerous media commitments. Also, I think he's happy being vice-captain to a player with the standing and respect of Riewoldt. I don't know that would apply to any other player in the team. So perhaps you would lose both Riewoldt's and Hayes' leadership:(.
