Serious question. Do we need to go down the Director of Coaching track again? The job MM knocked back, and Rodney Eade performed in his first two years with us (2012 and 2013). No one else has done it since, and Rocket was the only person with extensive senior coaching experience in the place. The rest were Bucks and his raw assistants. We also made the finals in those two years.
If Buckley still needs someone to hold his hand in the coaching box after 5 years, then quite clearly he isn't the man for the head coach job.

Leigh Matthews?
I love Leigh Matthews!
Nathan who? ;)

He's my favourite Collingwood coach in my time. Also best player I've ever seen, but that's immaterial.
Favourite Collingwood coaches In order (who i liked not necessarily best as Mick would be our second best coach)
Matthews, Hafey, Buckley, Rose, Malthouse, Cahill, Shaw (don't count Erwin, Weideman)

Order of coaches in talent, Matthews, Hafey, Malthouse, Rose, Buckley, Cahill, Shaw

Oh he will give a shit when he sees next year's attendance and membership numbers.

I remember back in the Shaw years an article about Eddie before taking over. He was commentating at a game which we were thrashed and a supporter sitting near the commentators box apparently threw his membership card down and said something to the effect "you can get stuffed Collingwood" or words like that.

He said that it really affected him that the club was struggling and going nowhere and he was determined to make it right He and his wife had dinner out that night and he put a plan together. One of the main points was to get someone who could coach.

Well we are in that same predicament now and all I hear from him is that there'll be no changes. Geez Carlton, Bulldogs, Saints, Eagles all saw the writing on the wall and made changes. They are all way ahead of us at the moment.

If Leigh Matthews was coaching us in 2017 id be sooo sooo happy. He can coach!

Some recent historical articles on Leigh Tudor.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...m/news-story/e91cec1ee55bd441d16b92fcbcb0e419

May 2009
Mark Thompson said St Kilda's blistering start to the year had grabbed the attention of the Cats' coaches, and he lauded the efforts of one-time assistant Leigh Tudor. Tudor left the Cats at the end of last season to join the Saints as assistant to Ross Lyon. "One thing I can't believe is that no one has spoken about Leigh Tudor leaving Geelong and being at St Kilda," he said. "They seem to be playing like Geelong."

Oct 2011
Leigh Tudor became the Swans midfield coach in 2011 after coming to the club from St Kilda, and will continue in the role in 2012.

Tudor's coaching highlights include the 2007 VFL premiership, winning 17 of 21 games to claim the flag with an emphatic win over Coburg in the Grand Final.

Oct 2013
LEIGH Tudor has joined North Melbourne as a senior assistant coach, after missing out on the interim coaching role at Essendon.

Tudor had signed a three-year deal with the Kangaroos, pending the outcome of his bid for the vacant Bombers' job.

The 44-year-old will be responsible for the Roos' midfield, where he will work closely with fellow senior assistant coach and former North Melbourne teammate Darren Crocker.

Tudor was most recently an assistant coach with the Sydney Swans, after stints in the coaching box with St Kilda and Geelong.

Jon Haines, North Melbourne's general manager of football operations, said the Roos are delighted to have secured the much sought-after Tudor. “(We) know he will add a high-level of experience, leadership and expertise to our side next season and beyond,” he said in a club press release.

“We see this as a valuable addition and critical for the club.”

Roos CEO Carl Dilena said on Wednesday that Tudor would help the Roos improve their defensive skills, an area the club chief admitted had let the club down this year.

"Leigh has a fantastic grounding in defensive team structures… That was a primary focus: getting in a senior assistant with those sorts of skills, who could really fix some of our deficiencies from this year," Dilena said.

Story may or not have happened that way, but with all things Ed there is an eye to the smoke and mirrors of PR and selling a story.

The rap on him when he stopped coaching was that he was yesterday's man, out of date with the game and that was some 8 or so years ago.
I'm always intrigued how when coaches get older, at some point they are labelled past it, the game of coaching has moved on.
Why is that? Is there a special genius that only certain aged people have re understanding the game.
Does Leigh suddenly stop watching the game?
By the way the rule of age does not seem to apply to older journalists, funny that, or come to that, older supporters.

I think its a tendency for some to get stuck in dimensions of what they are familiar with especially if you were successful in that dimension.

Sheedy (the ultimate some and mirrors man) out foxed everyone on this point. I don't know if Leigh would be a good coach now but he would be a helluva asset to have around the club in an overseeing type role as would David Parkin (very intelligent man with passion for the game and not afraid to make hard calls) for that matter

I think you are missing the point.
It's not about holding anybody's hand, it's about having better support.
Even Alistair Clarkson has assistants one is a former coach in Ratten.
Apparantly Clarkson doesn't take training just observes etc
Clearly Nathan doesn't need hand holding never has never will, but a better support group, why not?

Possibly Buckley's major problem is his force of personality. I suspect that it might be just easier to agree with him then to stand up and argue a point. Somebody like Matthews, Parkin or another strong personality would add balance . I'm not saying Buckley is arrogant just that maybe teh people we have around him aren't doing the right thing by him and arguing the point on various things. I remember watching an interview with a musician who has been around and successful for over 40 years and he said that one of the keys to success was not to surround yourself with sycophants. I wonder if we have a few too many yes men around the place

Great points

I agree with most of the posts in this forum , at a glance our fans are not only pissed with the fact that we have 4 wins and 7 or 8 losses .But the fact that there is no system in the way we play! Our game style for the hole of this year is a joke! All our losses have been disgracefull apart from the Buldogs loss loosing by 70 and 80 points! Getting touched up by the Dees twice! The saints the blues! Give me a break!
No system , the players are not playing for each other it is a huge concern! There is obvious deep seeded problems at our club and they have done a great job in covering it up and not allowing it to go out in the open.
Simple Buckley has to go at the end of the year enough is enough. If he wasnt a favourite son he would be gone!

It would appear that success seems to follow Tudor... unless he follows success!

I'm willing to hold off until the end of the year or even all or next year; not only to see if the team comes good under Bucks, but so we're not just picking any new coach just because we desperately need one.

Question, why do people assume that assistant coach at currently good club = would make a good senior coach? What on Earth could you possibly base this off without access to the inner sanctum? Not saying that the names being thrown up here wouldn't make good coaches but I'd love to know how you can get an accurate read on an assistant coach as just a supporter. Anyway, pretty sure Neeld and Watters were talked up as people that would make great senior coaches as Malthouse disciples. Unfortunately for them it didn't really seem to pan out that way.

Well said...given so little is known about our own assistant coaches anyone spruiking the talents of an assistant from another club is either kidding themselves or just repeating some rumour...

I think you might be onto something there...and of course we've ditched all the players who may have been willing to take a stand...productively or otherwise.
