I don't get the requirement to have cafes and restaurants nearby, we have talked about St Kilda etc in Melbourne, I was in Melbourne last week and stayed at the Tullamarine Mantra which is right next door to Essendon's new facility their is absolutely no cafe within a stones crow except for the motel facilities and the airport terminals.

Players and employees will go there to train and work, they will return to the normal environments after that.

I just don't think this is an issue

At the historical society function two weeks back, it was intimated, that the airport site was preferred, and that about 5 mil is .needed to be forthcoming from the AFL. It appears that they are holding off until some financial matters are secured, and will hopefully proceed at the end of the season, when the next rights deal is done.
It was great to hear how much impact the museum trip and orientation had on recruits, who , apart from the likes of Clayton Keays and one ot two others with club history, had little idea of the massive history, and that for example ,the Lions were THE power for the first 40 years of the comp, or that the premiership cups total more than any , bar about 4 others.Great to see Scotty Clayton, Murph, Flea, Christou, Hansen and co.in strong support.

Nothing about the search for a base in the Chairman's Update just delivered. In fact nothing we didn't already know at all.
I actually have a hunch that silence may indeed be golden this time. I think we might be in the final stages of some negotiations where silence is absolutely necessary.

I hope wherever the new HQ is, it features a medical centre (incl doctors, physio, X-ray, Pilates, yoga), a big gym, playground (AFL themed), a indoor heated 50m pool and a restaurant serving healthy food that the public can also pay to use. BUPA could own it... The BUPA Medical Centre?

you realise that bupa is no longer a sponsor of the lions right? as for all of those things, given we're struggling to get anything across the lions we're no chance of getting money for all of those things. Not sure what the point of having a training and admin centre that is full with people all the time.

I forgot BUPA were out. Doesn't matter. Point stands.
Having people = revenue source = sustainability
Dumb not to.
You realise can go to QSMC and Cav Rd Clinic for that matter at the moment...? Like this but bigger and better, and at the training ground...

I'm not sure you are fully attuned to the commercial realities of some of these proposals.

Fairly confident you may not be either.
Without doubt, a facility that can act as a revenue stream is beyond sensible.
I think we are having enough trouble bringing key parties to the table as it is. Convincing a Health Insurance company to enter the restaurant business seems a bit fanciful.

Video games are a team aren't they?

Given the risk and low margins in the hospitality industry I think any good insurance company would run as far from investing in a restaurant as their sedan chair carrying slaves could carry them.

meh, if we do go to the airport you can guarantee there will be some sort of health facilities there anyway. IIRC the airport site is going to be a mega-complex with multiple sporting teams. TBH I can't see a restaurant being situated there as it is... its not exactly an ideal location for that kind of thing and doubt it would get much traffic. Ofcourse this is just from the outside looking in so it's an uninformed opinion.

There is always the good old pie cart opportunity - but not too hot please.

They need not operate the restaurant.
Suggesting that a restaurant on site may be a good idea.... If you've got players and staff needing food anyway...
Anyway, there was much more to my suggestion... The gym, pool, medical centre being on site and accessible to the public.

This thread should be locked until there is real (and I mean confirmed/locked in) news. This is the one thing that is holding our club back in so may ways it's not funny. Minor palpitations when this thread pops up again after awhile.

God I hope we and the AFL have been laying the ground work for the Lions to get something out of the Federal election. Surely there will be no better chance to get a promise of some extra cash with so many Brisbane seats up for grabs. One thing you need to do is get matching pledges from both sides given it could go either way.

Obviously funding an AFL club is hardly a political home run in QLD. However, a joint community facility is still something that politicians would usually be falling over themselves to support. Another obvious problem is the lack of cash - but that hasn't stopped anyone pissing away money to date, and I won't expect it to stop anytime soon. We might as well try to get on the end of some of that money.

Unfortunately I don't have faith that the AFL has been fully behind us in terms of going above and beyond to make sure we get a decent training base in Brisbane. And given the financial predicament we are in, I wonder if we have been able to devote the resources necessary to lay the groundwork.

I guess time will tell.

I work for QLD Health and with what's going on with the budgets for public hospitals, I give us a 5% chance of getting any funding from State or Federal Govt for a facility in the next 2 years.

Can you help us with our terrible hygiene situation at our club?
