Well Greg Swann was on SEN for 10+ minutes and answered all the tough questions around at the moment, no mention of the base if I remember correctly.

Was blunt and honest throughout.
Possibly more a reflection of their lack of awareness/care factor on the issue than anything.

The only downside is that any option is still years away from completion.
Not necessarily - no reason why it couldn't be up and running by end of next year. 18 months to complete a surface and facility wouldn't be out of the question if it's signed off on this side of financial year.

If it were Melbourne the planning stage alone would take that long.

would take a year just for the legalities of it all with respect to environmental and planning laws probably.

The airport is a very interesting case planning and approval wise. They tend to get a fair bit of leniency and expedience on their development approvals in addition to having approved very defined master plans on file. This tends to result in them being able to get things going very quickly. In addition they're not constrained by a protracted tender process that you associated with govt departments which also allows for speed of contstruction. They pulled together a new base on the north side of their precinct for hertz within about 4 months for example (based on casual observation of driving past). Yes it wasn't a big structure but they can get stuff done quickly if needed.

GWS got their's done in about 18 months - announced mid-year 2012, training fields were ready for the 2013 preseason and the office/training building was complete in early 2014.

They don't have to go through local or State government IIRC. They have their own planning framework under the Airports Act.

One way of minimising delays would be to simply build exact replicas of our present facilities at Coorparoo.

The besser blocks for the canteen (BUPA coffee shop, if you prefer) should be easy to source, but then again I'm not so confident about the availability of the brown bricks, antique plumbing fixtures and asbestos sheeting for the dressing rooms - not quite as popular as they used to be for some reason.

Though new mould could be cultured from the old.

fair enough. I haven't looked into it at all but was worried, again without looking at overlay maps and codes, that the region was classified as an area of high ecological significant sub category (among other things) for instance and it surely is an impact assessable development? Surely has to go through a court of law which means throwing away at least 6 months of time just on impact assessments alone.

interesting... never heard of this before. Is the region we may be allowed to develop on even fall under the airports act? Would be excellent if true... might have a read about that act.

All land owned by BAC falls under the airports act. So yes if we're getting land at the airport then it will be covered under that. For example DFO and surrounding areas are owned by the Brisbane airport corporation. Such act skips most of the impact assessments etc. They have predefined areas of the map which are largely pre-approved for certain development categories. Within those areas they can put whatever the heck they like as long as it falls into the category. Sporting fields and commercial buildings are pretty much allowed to be put just about anywhere on their parcel of land. that parcel of land is bigger than any other airport in Australia.

this is making me really excited about what can potentially be build there. 35 million from the government, 5 million from the AFL, probably another few million from the Lions somewhere... I wonder what would be built to make all parties happy though? A multi cultural venue and AFL training facility don't exactly go hand in hand...

I'm excited too, just think .. we might even have a change room to get changed in as opposed to a tin shed.
