hi just started following so have a few questions, sorry if they are basic and sound dumb

looking at the league now Brisbane and Essendon are 36 pts behind the leaders, how can they be so noncompetitive? poor players? are they out their depth?

why do people hate Collingwood?

how much roughly is it to watch a game?

i see if you finish bottom you get #1 pick in the draft, is it like the US where you get prospects from Universities or they come from elsewhere?

thanks

Brisbane are hopelessly mismanaged, a lot of their players leave to return to Victoria and other aussie rules heartlands to play where people care for the game. Essendon have had 12 senior players missing this season due to their drug saga that has been the talk of the AFL since 2013, most will return next season.

People hate Collingwood because their fans tend to be one eyed and some are not "all there". Their president, Eddie McGuire, is also very arrogantly outspoken. Their players have a history to show off when they are winning.

To watch a game live, it's a variable price. It can be $25 for an adult (general admission) or $40 or so for a reserved seat. To watch it online, there's the AFL Global Pass for international viewers or AFL Digital Pass for those in Australia. Foxtel (cable) is also available here, but games are also shown on free to air in Australia.

Players can nominate for the draft from state leagues like the VFL, SANFL, or WAFL if they're mature aged, or they can play in an under 18's league like the TAC Cup in Victoria. Players usually get drafted at 18 from under 18's leagues as college sports are not as big here as they are in the US. The states each have an under 18's team who represents their state which attracts the recruiting managers from AFL teams in the lead up to the draft.

Hypothetically, could players from the VFL or regional footy clubs be promoted to the AFL? Or is that just a dream of the players?

Players on AFL lists not picked in the team will play for the state league team affiliated with that club. Well performed players outside the AFL squads can nominate for, and be picked up in the draft, however I have never heard of this happening for someone in a regional league, it would have to be a state league or under 18 comp. There is no promotion from state leagues or lower for players not already on an AFL list, outside of the draft.
