Now that the club has launched a new branding with new logos following our premiership win, I think it's time to revamp the club website as well.

As a regular visitor to www.gfc.com.au I find:
  • The design is dated: The current design has not changed for a number of years and is too similar with other AFL clubs sites.
  • Content not up to date: We're still seeing stories on Tim Callan winning the reserves' B&F when he's now a Dog player. OK that's just an example but there are items that are weeks old and often just a copy of what's on the afl.com.au website.
Also in the off-season surely there could be more features for footy-starved supporters such as reviews of the season past, previews of the new season, interviews with coaches and players. More multimedia content would definitely enhance the site.
  • Poor response time: this is a common problem with all BigPond-powered club sites.
I'm thinking along the lines of what Essendon have done: they have their own website www.essendonfc.com.au which is much better than www.bombersfc.com.au linked to the AFL website.

Do you agree? Should we have a second, completely new website like Essendon? Should the current website be revamped? Or are you happy with the site as it is?

Unfortunately there is not too much that the club can do about it. Back in the day when media rights were put on the table, all afl clubs, except essendon, handed over the rights of their websites to telstra and sportal (i think - correct me if I'm wrong) So content is managed entirely through the afl.com.au network.

Clubs have the ability to manage buttons and certain elements of the content but not the overall layout of the site. This is templated through the afl.com.au network and will remain until the next upgrade.

Im not sure how long the contract will last for but I think we may have to put it with for a little while longer.

Can I ask how that is outdated?

He won the VFL best and fairest award. He does not hand back the award because he is now a Bulldogs player. He is the current VFL best and fairest winner at the Geelong Football Club.

By that logic, the site remove all premiership photos with Steven King in them.

What I meant to say is that it is old news and that the site doesn't look like it's been updated for ages.

That is in the VFL news section, don't think much other VFL news has happened since then?
But I do agree, the layout it just crap with all the flash stuff and it's very hard to navigate through the site

This design is only a year old. It may not be the greatest site ever but it is ok and does the job. I can't see it changing.

It is the off-season, all the players are hols and I suspect most of the journos too. For me the site is too heavy and even on broadband takes far too long to load. General content is ok, although it toes the official line which makes it dull. We should be thankful that at least the vfl news and addy stories pad it out a bit.

Not if you don't have a PC....

The failings of the BigPond site are well known. It would be way better if we had an independent site ala Essendon, but as someone has said, we don't really have a choice until the next contract negotiation.

they need to get rid of that clunky flash/xml new item gallery, It's functionality is cool but it crashes browsers and makes the loading time far to slow. It's the same as the AFL website.

Maybe they should be putting some of the many millions they recieved for tv rights into actually getting a decent website

Geelong have sold any control over the web site in terms of its presentation (it is Big Pond at its worst) and how quickly it is updated (normal Telstra standards).
Essendon had the vision to hold onto their rights & I would hpe at the expiration of the current agreement we go it alone and provide something decent not the slow response and crappy presentation that is served up now
