You mean Nankervis and Naismith in the NEAFL? potentially he could ruck at that level.

Maybe as well if we play Nankervis or Naismith in the seniors, derx could get a game in the magoos.

In other words there is:

Seniors
Depth
fifty feet of crap then
Derickx

True, just that you never know. I would rather we didn't have to play Derikxx but it is better to have the depth rather than not. It is afterall only 1 spot on the list. Never know he could really come on and be a handy player for us this season, whether that be in the AFL or the NEAFL. At worst he provides experience for the youngsters to learn from.

Will be very interesting to see what the do with the number 37, happy either way. Actually would like it worn next year, perhaps Sinclair.
I see where you are coming from but it's not just a number to many people. It's a symbol of a champion of our club and while I don't have a problem with it being used again I'd just like it to either be given to someone that has a connection to it somehow (e.g. someone Adam wants to give it to). Or rest it until the right person comes along (e.g. A kid coming up through the ranks that's been inspired by Goodes and is passionate about the number).

If it was going to be anyone on the list right now I reckon Leonardis would be my pick.

I'd love to see Adam offer it up to him as a sign of reconciliation. IMO it would show that even though this young kid stepped out of line and indirectly abused him, he is willing to support him and help him learn, improve his understanding and empathy to become a better person.

Also, by wearing Adam's number "Leo" will hopefully learn how important it is to our club and how hard a champion really has to work to get the kind of 'attention' Goodesy has had (not to mention the brownlows, premierships, AA jumpers etc etc).

Hopefully it would make him want to do the 37 proud and would be a great story of helping a young man grow and become a better person.

I know you mean well as I, like you, love the great number 37, but personally I would hate to see a number given to a young player just to make a political statement.

37 should be retired from usage until a superstar aboriginal kid comes along.

If someone wants his number, fair play, for whatever reason motivates them if its available.

For a club to racially hand out numbers to players is disgusting. I don't like this post at all or Idea.

I think if Goodes wants someone to have the number, he offers it up & they accept then the reason doesn't matter. In this instance it would be a "why can't we all just get along" type reason. But I do see the need to ensure we manage our risk to connections with specific political &/or ideological personal opinion. We aren't a poitical party or lobby group, we're a footy club after all.

I think it should be up to Adam as to who gets the number. Either he offers it up to someone he wants to have it or some young kid comes banging the door down for it & he can't say no.

I'm getting the feeling that many on here want Leonardis to fail. Lets give the kid a chance FFS.

I want him to succeed! I just don't think the club should give him 37 just because of something he happened to like on social media, that's just my opinion.

Back on topic (my favourite three words), I don't have a strong opinion on guernsey numbers in general. As a young player, my goal would be to honour whatever number I am given and create my own history wearing that number.

Sorry RW, I wasn't inferring that you Wanted him to fail. It's all the negativity from everyone else. The poor kid is being hung out to dry.

I don't think it's that bad. I haven't seen anything too over the top (then again I don't have facebook or twitter).

The kid made a mistake, we've all been there, you live & you learn. Yeah, of course some will find it insulting that one of our own holds such views to one of our all time greats (& a top notch bloke). It's only natural to get your back up & do the "who does he think he is" type shocked/defensive reaction... It'll pass though & I reckon as soon as he pulls on the colours, no matter the number on his back, I'll want him to succeed & I'll be behind him as will the majority.

Anyway, on topic, I'd love to see 17 or 11 for young Tom Papley (Paples, paps, pappy, papps, papper, papperz).

A bit stiff for the Laids Hiscox combo to shift to a new number though so I mean more for the future when Tom makes it to the seniors.

17 is Hiscox & 11 is Laidler.

I would guess 41

Edited my post to clarify. Sorry. :thumbsu:

I hope Hiscox makes it, and I rate Laidler. Hope it makes it to the seniors before either of those numbers are free ;)

Laidler takes the mark on the HBF, kicks to Hiscox. Boy this kid can run, 1 bounce, 2 bounces and then a perfect delivery to paps who lines up for his 3rd goal. :p

Symbolism is important in football clubs. A good gesture would be to give Tom Papley No. 11 in honour of his grandfather Max Papley who wore it and the South Melbourne tradition. Laidler can get 37 which would be also a great honour.
The three most skilful South Melbourne footballers of the 60's era in my humble opinion were:
1. Skilton
2. Bedford
3. Papley
Papley won the 1966 club Best and Fairest playing with Skilton.
All three were local lads, two were from South Melbourne Tech and two were very good cricketers.
Give the kid No. 11 and keep the tradition alive.

I agree, would be a really nice gesture if Pap;ey was able to use the 11 to keep the family connection strong but it's just a bit harsh to ask Laidler (or Hiscox) to shift numbers. They've probably become attached to them now after having them for a while. Particularly Laidler who's been in the number for a fair while now I believe.

Would be a huge ask, great if it happened, but I'm not holding my breath. Hopefully in any case Tom can make something of himself and represent the club for a long successful career (no matter the number on his back). Maybe he can (and wants to) start his own legacy under a new number?
