I was just wondering if you could give an example next to warning, minor, midrange and serious.

All of the rules now have the levels marked against them.

Specific examples are difficult to give because often there is a context that must be considered.

For instance telling someone to "piss off you idiot" in one instance might go unnoticed and uncommented and so there is no effect on the thread. Another time it might set off a flame war.

So it all depends on how the other people take what you said?

What if someone was to say "Stop being an idiot." or adding another words in there. There is a common one that has been used, but since I'd probably cop a warning I shall not post it.

Context counts. This is the very reason I don't want to get specific.

I could spend days answering and debating what is and is not specifically likely to get you points.

Just follow the rules, post sensibly and with respect for other users as fellow human beings and you don't need to worry. Is that too much to ask?

It also depends on the board. Gets tricky doesn't it?

So, like I said, just post sensibly and don't try to work out how far you can push the envelope. Most mods can spot a smart arse or troll a mile off and are happy to give them the flick if they try to disrupt the site.

It's human interaction guys. You do it every day. Surely most people know how to show a little respect and courtesy don't they?

So its basically left up to the discretion of the mods on the forums??

Boy, Im gone already from one board.;)

In practice, mods have more leeway to loosen up or clamp down on minor infractions. With the serious infractions they have very little leeway.

Every user should lurk on a board for a couple of weeks before posting. That way they will get a better idea of the culture of that board.

I get it, it's a bit like AFL umpiring.
One umpire will award a free, while another umpire will ignore the same indiscretion.
Or one week the mods will be hot on an indiscretion and forget about it two weeks later.

And look how well that system works - never ever any controversy about AFL umpires decisions eh?.

How long do the points stay for after your infraction time is up? Mine has expired, but it still shows the 4 points, or are the points expired too & that message just stays there forever?

Glad the new points for yellow cards just came in, otherwise I would have got a yellow card for calling someone an ignoramous.

I've learnt my lessons in this, I watch others get themselves in trouble and avoid that at all costs. Last few months I think the only thing I did was respond to someone saying saying getting called non-racial names as racist so I asked if "If I call you an idiot would that be racist too?;)"

Yeah, most of us can behave, though you get this one person, even in person where you try your best not to have a go at and you seem to bite. But usually it's easy to ignore them all.

How come some people get upgraded from yellow to red without infracting.

Is this another poor IT system full of bugs.

In order:

Murray, I look forward to your constructive, practical suggestion on how to overcome a basic problem in applying a uniform set of rules over a varied set of boards and an even more varied group of people.

Mantis, The infractions stay on your profile, but show as 'expired' when they expire.

Goalpie, Did you read the announcement at all? This is the para that answers your question:
Apologies to people who lose access while we adjust points levels. Please contact us to get any problems sorted out.

Every mod should use Fred as a template as to how a board/issue/complaint should be dealt with.

Why not give the mods an on line tutorial (in AFL speak - how to interpret the rules) run by Fred explaining how to do the job correctly.

Alternatively use Fred as the ultimate arbiter in any dispute between a mod and a poster ie a poster can escalate an issue to Fred, who will make a final and binding decision.

You have the resource, why not use it?

I wouldn't presume to tell mods how to moderate their own boards. Given that they can set the tone of their boards in what they allow or don't, I wouldn't have the 'feel' of boards I don't frequent.
In any case, I'd be the last one to to ask about rule interpretations. I generally make my own to suit the occasion but don't tell anyone.

Your suggestion about an arbiter does have some merit. Again though, I wouldn't like to put mods in the situation of feeling over-ruled when they genuinely thought they made a correct decision. Modding isn't an exact science - it's just doing what you think is right for the situation at the time.
It's not life or death and any contentious points given generally expire in a week or two anyway. Most of those that are prone to arguing the toss don't take any more notice of me than anyone else anyway.:)

You mean for attacking someone personally don't you?

You're just so shifty you can talk your way out of it. I have to make do with multiple mixed metaphors and lashings of Newspeak. Double plus ungood Fred!
