I remember when GC joined people were posting round these parts about a possible Trademark clash with Phoenix Suns which prevented them from using the nickname, so the use of the full Gold Coast SUNS with the caps somehow got around this. Perhaps it was speculation. I assume most clubs have their nicknames Trademarked, separate to the club name, excluding some like Brisbane Lions which I assume goes as one name.

It will be fantastic if this change means we stop hearing the media call them The GWS Giants!!
I think it's because Gold Coast are a football club not basketball.

The Townsville Crocodiles were originally called the Townsville Suns but had to change their name due to Phoenix.

Yeah, that really annoys me. Could someone please explain why I am seeing "Geelong Cats" plastered everywhere in the same manner as "Brisbane Lions"? It's bizarre, it's even like that on tv. Why isn't it just Geelong?
Geelong rebranded themselves as 'Geelong Cats' prior to the 2008 season with a new logo etc, they wanted to distance themselves from the 'GFC' moniker as it was associated with the Global Financial Crisis at the time. Seems silly now but supposedly that was the reason.

That is textbook insanity.

Apparently the colours will be fine.
shouldn't be anything else changing.

Is there a manufacturer history thread?
Crows are getting a complete new set, full hoops for home and the white and yellow away jumpers.

Suns new clash.

GWS might go with a new clash too considering they are running with an ISC design too.

The right option won, in this case. The hoops were a good idea executed terribly; Mero's, while good for what it is, lost all meaning once the club altered it; and option #4 is a dog's breakfast that should never have made the 'final'.

I won't mind seeing this out on the field.
