Jones to play a few games early and then get squeezed out as the experienced players return.
McHenry to get a taste at some stage. Stengle will get a game or two to give Betts a rest (should manage him to ensure he is fully fit for finals). ROB MUST play at least 5 games. We have to be smart in our use of Sauce.
You are 100% correct. It shouldn't be this way though. There are reasons we haven't won a flag in many years, and this is a big one.Scott Thompson is the only player that we've ever rested despite numerous opportunites with dead rubbers and certain thrashings. I've seen a lot of people posting about players getting a game or 2 when someone is rested and I'm really not sure where it comes from. Resting players goes against one of our driving principles which is that continuity wins football matches.
Continuity was our theme in 2017 where we hardly blooded any new young talent (eg. Doedee). Then came 2017, we have witnessed not only a recurring hamstring pattern, but it was also the mismanagement of players when returning from injuries:Scott Thompson is the only player that we've ever rested despite numerous opportunites with dead rubbers and certain thrashings. Continuity was our theme in 2017 where we hardly blooded any new young talent (eg. Doedee). Then came 2017, we have witnessed not only a recurring hamstring pattern, but it was also the mismanagement of players when returning from injuries:
- Tex had recurrent foot issues, and never looked right the whole year
- Betts had a repeated strain issue and it had an obvious effect in his kicking distance
- Sauce was crappy and then crappier the longer the season went; apparently he had lingering lower back issues.
So whilst continuity is our main theme, we also cannot hide from the fact managing players with niggles and prevention of long term injuries is an important aspect in modern footy. Not to mention with a fair few new young talent, we can have the best of both worlds with continuity and resting in patches to allow more game time in the up-n-comers.
