Yeah, this is not good. Same old Carlton.

Lets give him a couple of years in the job before we condemn or praise him mate.

The Doggies have a damn good draft record in recent years, so I am feeling pretty optimistic myself.

It's not as if we had a chance to poach a Graham Wright or Kinnear Beatson type..

I am perhaps biased, but I think it's a significant coup myself, and I doubt it's a job for boys scenario as others have alluded too.

He certainly is well credential/got a decent CV.

From the Doggies Board

Career man. Started with us over a decade ago, then spent time at Port, Richmond, us again and now Carlton. If I recall he wasn't first in charge of drafting at Richmond?

To summarise his selections at the Dogs: Smith, West, Vandermeer, Cavarra, Hayes, Young (R), Sweet (R), Khamis (R), Gardner (M), Weightman, Butler, Garcia.

Smith and West both likely to be hits (West a freebie given F/S, Smith also not a difficult choice I think), Young and Hayes look like good value selections and the jury is still very much out on the rest.

It's a big position to fill though, important to get the next one right.

I am very comfortable, if not confident, we got the right person to replace SOS.

A person should not judged purely for his name or family member(s) but the sum of the body of work that they have produced, and from the sounds of it, Austin has a pretty damn good strike rate.

For reference, he arrived in 2018, so his record at the Dogs:
2018: Smith (pick 7), West (26 F/S), Vandermeer (37), Cavarra (45), Hayes (78), Young (R6), Sweet (R23), Khamis (R cat B), Gardner (mid-season)
2019: Weightman (15), Butler (53), Garcia (62).

From the 2018 crop, Smith and West look like hits (although fairly easy selections), Hayes and Young both look like good value at this stage, and the jury is still out on the rest.

He wasn't around for the earlier selections like English, Naughton or Richards, they were done by Dalrymple who is now at Sydney. Also didn't look after trades (eg Lloyd, Bruce, Keath), which is done by Sam Power.

Nick Austin ticks all the boxes for me.

Solid drafter and comes from a club that has had successful trade periods.

Also immediate Carlton royalty.

Boom!

If this was a job for the boys he would have been at the club years ago and not learned and been impressive at Richmond, the Dogs and more.

I have no issues with this appointment, and I am not sure how anyone could be against it.

He may be a great get, he may not be, but the only fair way to judge it is by what he achieves in the role.

Revisit down the track and see what he has done. Until then, welcome to Carlton and enjoy the ride.

Who his dad is, is irrelevant. Went out and spent 15 years gaining experience outside of the club and clearly grew enough to get seriously responsibilities in the process.

If I read correctly some of the roles within the group are changing as well, so its always going to be different.
