Blair Hartley??

He’s not even that good. It was only recently he was throwing first and second rounders around for Yarran and Hampson, and picking Lennon ahead of Cripps.

Overrated list manager being made to look good from a freakishly good crop of elite players (all of whom went high in the draft) and great coaching.

He’s ‘nailed’ late picks lately because they’re coming into an elite system and being developed.

Bit of luck involved as well. As with Cripps I wonder how good the Richmond list manager and ‘system’ would look if Melbourne had take Martin instead of Scully and Trengove.

Not bad. Player agent so has some idea of the system. Comes across pretty well on radio.
agree - what's with all these players that shat me to tears who end up being great in the media? lucas, roo, buckley, harvey, goddard, maxwell, lewis? well?

At a minimum you should punch yourself in the face.

With respect to the thread title, we are not looking for a 'New List Manager'. We already have one of those, he goes by the name of Michael Agresta. We are looking to fill the position of GM List Management & Strategy, a position which lies between that held by Agresta & that held by Brad Lloyd.

When a candidate is chosen I'll be interested to see if there is some tweaking of the job description because it feels like there might be some duplication of duties between this position & the respective positions held by Agresta & Lloyd.

What happened to wells.. is he available?
Wells is the only one on par with SOS, but Geelong would never let him go, unless somehow we got Cain Liddle over there to screw up their club.

maybe someone from brissy..they have produced a good list organically.

I doubt Monday’s “bring your pitchfork” to the “let’s hit the reset button with the new guy” forum will do much in securing a talented replacement.

I think this is a good point. You can argue the toss about his success with late picks but (a) you’re only as good as your scouts and (b) it’s a mixed bag for everyone anyway.

But you can’t argue that he’s been aggressive and proactive in the way he’s accumulated picks and been willing to use the new rules. So far (and it’s admittedly early) he proven to be ahead of the game and gained us a clear advantage.

I often wonder where we’d be if someone else had come in and just taken a more traditional route to list building. We wouldn’t have Stocker. We wouldn’t have McKay and Curnow. If this comes off, it will be because SOS has been willing to back himself and use the rules to his advantage.

Ultimately, THATS what we risk losing...not his judgement on players.

So we need a good negotiator. Brodie and Agresta can do the talent ID. So it could be someone from a non footy background. Someone who knows how to play poker.

Whoever we get we have to get behind him, keep the Silvagni shit separate. This is all the CEO and the boards doing so give it to them instead.

For sure. And whoever it is, will have a relatively easy job, compared to most of the other 17 people in similar positions.
Out 2020 list priorities should be:
1. Maintain the list/don't lose any required players
2. Papley, or if that fails, another high quality small forward who can take over from Betts

3. Another ruck if Kreuzer or Levi go.

Interesting that Scott Clayton is back in the fold as NMFC’s new list manager.

Didn’t exactly set the GCFC up that well. Wonder if he’ll be back to his penchant for outside wingers/flankers, like the glory days at CFC when that was our thing too.

Good at least that SOS won’t be heading up their list management role (at this stage), as was rumoured.

How are **** are people still hiring Scott Clayton?

Going to be a bit hard to get a good replacement given how SOS was treated and undermined

Will SOS’s grievances be aired to those in the industry, and his thoughts that he allayed at the boardroom meeting as well?

Edit:
Also, sounds like you have the 3 amigo’s in Liddle, Lloyd & Agresta who all could be aligned - I’m sure they’ll be selling that & the propaganda that will coming from both sides.

I would like to see a restructure of sorts going forward. We have a head of football with a list management background. We had SOS, Agresta and Brodie with "senior" roles and a group of scouts/recruiters/analysts. We effectively beefed up our list management department.

The "rebuild" has basically been done. The days of a myriad of list changes annually have been done. I see only three current players in extreme danger of dropping off the list.
Lang, who has had his share of injuries and is perpetually underprepared, even at his best the odds would be against him featuring in our best 22 with a fit list.
Polson, I had high hopes for on his highlights package, and is a "goer". He may well improve if given a more natural role, but I can't get the picture of his multiple basic skill errors I witnessed at last years Maroochydore camp out of my head. Not up to it and his promoter Bolts is gone.
Macreadie, like most, I have seen good signs, but has had an extended period of struggling to get on the park and his body is underdeveloped for his time on the list. It is not yet too late for this talented type, but time is not on his side if he can't turn things around. I have Goddard and BSOS ahead as back ups at this stage.

Certainly O'Dwyer will come under scrutiny, but coming from a long way back, showed enough not to be junk piled like so many on here have him. Obviously needs a good year, but does not deserve the automatic delist status so many have him in. Another injury plagued year would have Williamson in trouble, but I am backing he and Russell. The mention of Kennedy as a possible dumping by some is absolutely laughable. (Have not addressed rookie list here)

So back to the point at hand. Delistings are going to be few and far between, most of our spots will be opening up through retirements. For the most part, retirements will be dictated by Teuguey and the match committee as opposed to tough list management calls.

We need someone to continue with the effective management of our Total Player Payments more than we need a dynamic draft performer. Brodie, Agresta and support staff would largely be adequate here. Soon enough our first pick should be in the teens for an extended time. Availability and needs will dictate our picks more than top end talent for the foreseeable future. With "linear" improvement, there are minimal gaps or urgent needs on our playing roster. Draft day will be business as usual, rather than the annual highlight it has become.

I must admit if he is deemed worthy of consideration by the brain's trust, Bain should have a considerable insight in to a variety of strategies utilised around the league and an intricate knowledge of real player worth. I would prefer to "gamble" on a bloke moving sideways to an associated role with a few possible challenges, than taking a mediocre performer form club land who may be easily influenced by Liddle & co.

I dont think it would be Walls. He would jump from National Draft Manager to GM of List Manager, effectively jumping 2 positions and effectively skip Agresta's position who would now report to him

Agresta seems like a nice guy, and has a decent track record of talent ID, but there’s no way he’s someone I’d want haggling over draft picks or negotiating contracts with player managers.

His current role suits him, and he’s probably still a few years off being seriously considered for a more senior position.

In all seriousness, I'm not excited by any of the choices so far. We're undoubtedly trading down, and hoping that someone can upskill themselves into a shrewd operator.

The question is, why hasn't this already been sorted out?
They've known they were sacking SOS for quite a while.
There'd have only been informal talks until last week, as recruiting contracts expire now.

I've got no idea how some of these guys survive and thrive. I was shocked when he got a good gig at WC, and now he's got an even better gig at North.

I like North. One of my favorite "other" teams.

Can't quite comprehend this one.

How are **** are people still hiring Scott Clayton?
Allow me to explain: he's not doing the talent ID this time. They'd likely escort him out the building if he started requesting the names of 17 general forwards for the list.

I don’t believe this for a second.

The club will have their own version of events, and although there has clearly been some bad decisions made it’s not going to seriously jeopardise our ability to attract a decent candidate.

There would be plenty of people excited by the opportunity of managing the list we’ve assembled. It’s just a case of getting the right person for the job.

Probably true, but he must be kept for continuity. You do not uproot your list management team every few years if you intend to be a truly great great club and go forward into dynasties. A strategy was started and needs to be added to, not uprooted and some totally different thinking just dumped onto our club in this area. Lloyd and Agresta have to work very closely with whomever comes on board and explain to them what the strategy was, why and continue to add and regenerate the list to become clear number one in the league over coming years and then make the gap beyond other clubs even bigger.

The issue is that the guns will not want a job where they are interfered with. And whatever you think about the current situation, and rights and wrongs, there has undoubtedly been interference.

No List Manager is going to want to work under Liddle trying to recruit players behind your back, until Liddle is sacked and walked out that door all we are getting is a Bolton type appointment.
Can see Agresta having a bit more responsibility and Lloyd getting more involved, effectively sharing SOS's role.
