New Live Commentary in beta testing mode

Hi folks,

I am experimenting with displaying the match commentaries on the web, auto-updating as the match is played.

Advantages :
Advantage A. Turns my three steps :
1. Play match.
2. Post commentary.
3. Update stats.

into two steps :
1. Play match, commentary automatically sent to the web.
2. Update stats.

Advantage B. Reader doesn't have to refresh. They just watch an automatically updating screen.

Advantage C. Sould be more entertaining for you to see the match in real life, and on the web.

Disadvantages :
Disadvantage A. Can't come into the thread late and just read everything that was posted earlier. It won't be posted on the thread at all.
Action intended : The comments file in total will be uploaded to the web as well. A thread will be posted advising the time of the match, with a link to the webpage. Final scores will be posted on this thread with a link to the full commentary file.

Stats will be the same as they were last year.

The site is currently in beta testing mode at http://www.lexicon.net/POTOC/livecomm.htm with made-up teams playing every now and then. Feel free to have a decko and tell me what yer reckon. Might need some tweaking yet.

I suppose it will be better, but I dunno. I still liked it the way it was. Also, if you miss the match, you can run through it on BigFooty. Maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I like it the way it was.

A query on the commentary. Can we include fights, or incidents which could produce tribunial appearences, and possible suspensions. Maybe injuries too? COuld also add more to the commentary, to make it more interesting...

Opinion noted. I could of course post the whole commentary in one massive file to the board as well.

Re fights, possibly, but it would be BLOODY difficult to make these changes. Additional commentary is more of a possibility. I'm working on it.

ok I've also fixed a couple of errors.

Basically we used to have a problem in the commentary where the following statement might occur :

{player name} IS TACKLED BY .

The error being that the tackler's name is omitted.

I believe that I have just fixed that one.

It might also fix the following :

HAS A BOUNCE.

once again the player's name was missing.

If anybody can see one particularly boring or repetitive action (meaning it doesn't choose from enough random comments for one particular action - tackles, shots at goals, etc), please offer some additional one's and I'll judge them and put them in if they're ok.

Good stuff. Just as long as the whole game is done through a post on this board as well, cos most of the time I wont be on to watch it live.

Im never on when there played live so i like the match being posted on BF so i can just read through it and its just like its live ... you should do both to accomodate for those who see it live or arent online and can just see it later..

Fair enough, though with a link to the full commentary (same as what is posted to the board circa 2001), wouldn't that attend to your desires sufficiently?

That would be great. To be able to view the commentary whenver we want. I'm another who is never online while the games are in progress.
