So does anyone have any 'real' info on what the new guernsey looks like.....

New-look Power's strong teal feel
By MICHELANGELO RUCCI The Advertiser 11 February 2004

PORT Adelaide is taking the black out of its second-choice AFL jumper – and the cool new look is to be unveiled at Alberton Oval on Saturday just when the Power will need much heat relief.

The first outing of Port's new away guernsey – which replaces the "lightning bolt" the Power wore in its Wizard Cup pre-season triumphs in 2001 and 2002 and at away games last year – will be in Port's internal trial at Alberton on Saturday afternoon when Adelaide will bake with temperatures forecast beyond 40C.

Out will go the black – the colour which absorbs most heat – and there is likely to be a greater emphasis on teal, the colour that ensures a stark contrast against most AFL rivals. This is exactly to the AFL's order.

Port's battle wardrobe will have two jumpers next year. The black-white-and-teal guernsey it has worn at almost every home game since joining the AFL in 1997 will remain Port's first-choice jumper. The new jumper – described by the Power as "very different" to anything the club has worn – will be worn in away games whenever the No. 1 jumper does not offer enough on-field contrast. It will be the first time Port has had a jumper without black as a dominant colour since 1900.

An AFL ruling last year – when the Power reverted to black-and-white for heritage week – also demands Port wear the new jumper in all games against the black-and-white Collingwood for the next three years.

Port is likely to formally parade the new jumper, which is still to be delivered by manufacturer Nike, at a media conference later in the week.

By then the Power also will have a clearer picture on how to proceed with its trial game at Alberton.

The match is listed to start at 4.30pm. However, with high temperatures forecast and with both trial teams likely to be limited to 15 players each, the Power may opt for a twilight start at 7pm.

This would also be more attractive to Port fans not wanting to stand under the afternoon sun at Alberton.

What the ****? Since when? When we play them in Melbourne, sure.

I'm also sure that it wasn't a ****ing ruling, it was an agreement that Port made, otherwise the AFL would just tell Collingwood what to do.

Rucci, go away again. Please jump on the Adelaide United bandwagon instead.

Unless it was like those veteran rule changes that the AFL snuck in on us a few years ago.

These are the type of things that should have Boults and Bucky in the media spewing about how we all feel about changes made behind closed doors.

I remember Port agreeing to make an alternate jumper to wear in away games in agreement with the AFL, but nothing about wearing it at home. Methinks Rucci is being slack with his journalism again.

Agreed. Or at least one of them.

I do remember something in particular about Collingwood in regard to the new jumper but I'm still searching through the old news items for further reference......

That appears to be the case as that's all I can find in my searching so it would be interesting to put the question to the club as to what caused the change........unless it's just a typicial Rucci stuff up........

Here's the comments I can find from various articles:-

Port behind bars for Heritage round

As part of the deal the Power has also agreed to wear its predominantly teal jumper for the next three away games it plays against Collingwood.

Power chooses teal for new ‘clash’ guernsey

The Power will unveil a brand new ‘clash’ guernsey in 2004 that will be predominantly teal in colour.

The club will wear the new guernsey to avoid clashes with opposition clubs when it is the ‘away’ team.

The Power wore an all teal training guernsey (as part of a sponsorship deal with M&M’s) for a match against Collingwood in 2002 with much success and Power chief executive Brian Cunningham said it was a popular colour with supporters.

“Teal is a colour that our supporters and particularly our younger supporters love, and accordingly we will be developing the clash guernsey with teal as the predominant colour,” Cunningham said on Monday.

The Power has been a long-time advocate of all clubs developing ‘clash’ guernseys to avoid confusion and frustration among football fans when teams are wearing similar-looking guernseys.

“As we have said on several occasions, we believe it is important for AFL football supporters that every club has a true clash guernsey, and we are in the process of developing ours with our manufacturer Nike,” Cunningham said.

The Power will not be unveiling the new guernsey until later in the year.

Heritage Weekend guerneys – AFL statement

"Further, the club has agreed with the AFL to wear an alternate clash predominantly teal strip for away matches against the Collingwood Football Club for the next three seasons."

so what? we support a modern football club, embracing the future, respecting the past n all that.

i hope it doesnt look too childish - they said it was aimed at appealling to the younger supporters, note the comment that its "very different" to anything the club has previously worn.

worried yet, anyone?

Really, who gives a rat's clacker. It's what's running around inside the jumper that counts. I'm sure we'll get used to it in time, and grow to love it no matter what it looks like.

I'm not really concerned about what it looks like............just the issue of wearing it at a home game as the article implies as there was no mention of this from the club or AFL last year through the usual outlets.........

The jumper doesn't need black in it, judge it once you've seen it.

As for wearing it in home games against Collingwood, I seem to remember the Advertiser reporting the same thing last year and Bucky came out and explained that it was for away games only, and they had planned to do it anyway. Don't believe everything you read in newspapers (or on Internet forums :p )

Whatever, Porthos. It's not important. The so-called 'possession game' is a different matter.

I doubt any existing Port fans will stop going to games or buying memberships or merchandise just because we have a new jumper which is worn half the time at most. Would you do any of that just because you didn't like the away jumper?

As far as attracting new fans is concerned, success and an exciting style of play will do that. Being more worried about jumper colours than putting the pill through the sticks sounds more like a Crows fan's perogative.

Thats not the point. Its no good making the club that its cool to be a fan of when you're five if its also the club that look like big teal dorks when you're 13, because then you're just as likely to lose that fan.

Believe it or not, but those are the people we're trying to pull in. True story.

I guarantee you that a 13 year old will follow the big teal dorks that win the flag rather than the also-rans with the cool black jumpers.

I taught year eights and nines in high school for several years. They're highly concerned with image and fitting in, that's fact, not just common perception. If they are on the fence football-wise, and the Power win a flag or two in a two team town like Adelaide, most kids of that age are likely to lean to the successful club. Look at how many jumped on the Crows' bandwagon after their two flags, even with their fruit-tingle of a jumper. But of course when they're in the merchandise shop, they don't buy the 'dorky' teal jacket (if indeed it was so, and one was actually made), they go for the 'cool' one.

It's a non-issue.
