News New Magpies AFLW Coach

Collingwood are on the verge of announcing a new AFLW coach, with South Australian Steve Symonds firming as Wayne Siekman’s replacement.

Two months after the Magpies announced that Siekman’s contract would not be renewed after three seasons at the Holden Centre, the Pies are in the final stages of their recruitment process.

The Age understands that Symonds, who coaches Norwood in the SANFLW competition, as well as being the coach of Norwood’s academy, has been squarely in the mix to take over the job at Collingwood.

Symonds has an extensive coaching history in South Australia, having also worked for Sturt and Glenelg. He was also previously the development manager for AFLNT.

Impressive CV too.

Interestingly, they seem to have made a point of his experience with setting up programs from scratch. It doesn’t seem like the club is confident that he has a solid foundation to build upon!

Great interview with him here. Full of experience and information. Wanting to establish good culture and relationships.

Further coaching changes announced. Both Clifton and Creeper look to have a lot of lower level footy experience; Creeper most recently with Norwood (Symonds' club). No word on whether Matthew Jones (AFLW forward coach 2018-19) has been bumped into another position or departed the club.

New:
VFLW senior | AFLW assistant: Chloe McMillan
AFLW senior assistant and midfield coach: Chris Clifton
AFLW forward coach: Mat Creeper
Specialist coach: Brodie Grundy
Specialist coach: Jordan Roughead
Specialist coach: Lynden Dunn (previously AFLW midfield coach)

At the end of 2014 there was a changing of the guard somewhat with the return of former premiership player and reserves coach Mat Creeper. Mat had spent the past eight seasons in Townsville with the Hermit Park Tigers where he was a premiership player, vice president, senior assistant and head coach. Mat has taken on the role of president, a role that he has met head on identifying the need for the club again to become a force along with implementing the changes required for the club to be successful. With a wealth of knowledge having been involved with the game for many years the club is sure to benefit from his experience.

Grundy? Now that's a surprise. I'm not surprised by Roughy, as I heard he was involved with the dogs aflw group.
Mmmmm, signs new contract, the rest writes itself.
