The club has announced that it has entered into a Heads of Agreement (HOA) with the Town of Victoria Park to develop a new home for the Eagles at Lathlain Park, seven kilometres south-east of the Perth CBD.

Subject to formal contracts, the Eagles anticipate leaving their traditional Subiaco Oval home and relocating to a new training, administration and community complex at Lathlain Park before the start of the 2017 season.

The club has plans to build $50 million state-of-the-art headquarters, which will be one of the premier sporting club facilities in Australia.

Great news for the club to have its own facilities and ties in nicely with the new stadium.

One question though is that in light of this decision it would have made more sense if the Eagles were aligned with Perth rather than East Perth. Is the host club arrangement something that can be changed bearing in mind such decisions run the very real risk of making a mockery of the WAFL competition which has already been messed around with too often as it is.

It would make sense in 2 ways, firstly due to ground location and secondly due the alignments being with the clubs that are systematically the least successful.

Was speaking to Ross Glendinning about this on the weekend

His suggestion to me was the final cost was going to be a lot higher and that the $50m was what WC were contributing.

In addition, the new nest will finally have clubrooms for supporters to go to for after match functions etc.
Am I the only one with the urge to indulge in Evil Overlord(tm) style laughter? Nice to see us flexing some financial muscle for a change!

When the alignment with EP occurred, I assumed that was the end of the Lathlain Park development. It doesn't make sense to me

I definitely like the two training ovals detail, one home size, one MCG size. Very good thinking, should help improve our preparation for MCG games no end.

Having proper clubrooms for supporters, even out in Vic Park, will be great to help bring together the Eagles community. Would be a great for WCE BF get togethers so we can find and beat the hell out of some of the troll sillies on here.

This is a fantastic announcement

Well done to the club for the insight into the fact that we are one of the powerhouses in the comp and deserve a first rate facility, but currently have 80's style tin shed!

I hope that the Subiaco City Council is not happy!

I have a suspicion that in years to come, Subiaco will look back wistfully on this time and wonder if they could have done a little more to screw everyone over less.

Great news!!! Just walking distance for me:) and I can see how the new stadium combined with this facility will really bring up the area and complement the multitude of cafes, restaurants and pubs along Albany Hwy. The best aspect though is the dedicated top notch facilities for the Eagles. Don't feel too bad now paying the high Land Rates:)

Haha. Exactly. We park an West Perth and walk to Subi on game day. But I ALWAYS see people trying to park in the market bays. I like to warn people that they will get fined, just to stick it up the council!

Why?

It's a training base. It's a much bigger picture than a WAFL allignment - these dollars have far longer reaching implications.

I suspect the allignment is only a gateway to what both local AFL clubs want anyway.

After all, with the $60m pricetag involved, you could purchase every component of the WAFL, grounds and all.

Where will East Perth train? Where will Perth train? Surely an alignment with Perth would have made more sense.

Great news. I spent my youth at Lathlain, Little league, after match functions even kicked the ball to Ben Cousins at half time when he was a little tike. I think this is a great idea, get down there to check it out, it is one of the nicest Ovals in Perth.

When are we gonna invest in our own private jet/runway?
Runway may be overdone, however once both clubs have bedded down (and paid for) their new training digs I daresay travel will be the next agenda item.

The thing to remember of course is profit from WC and Freo directly funds grassroots footy. Nisbett said a few years ago the cost of private charter was $850k pa back then. A $1m a year to fly players direct for marginal benefit is a fair amount out of local footy.

I think the whole idea of chartering has value - but not every game.

Perhaps for night games, 6 day breaks and finals.

Virgin ran a direct return flight to Hobart for us last year as well
