ESPN's Mike Triplett considers the Saints a landing spot for free agent Richard Sherman.
The Saints have been linked to Sherman since March, but the five-time Pro Bowler is waiting out training camp before signing. Even after extending RT Ryan Ramczyk, the Saints could make room for Sherman, who would start on the outside. New Orleans has Patrick Robinson and third-round CB Paulson Adebo as its top options behind Marshon Lattimore.

Michael Thomas, Saints may still be on a collision course

Posted by Mike Florio on July 24, 2021, 9:40 AM EDT

Last year, evidence of very real friction emerged between the Saints and superstar receiver Michael Thomas. The fact that Thomas reportedly will miss the start of the season due to ankle surgery dating back to the injury he suffered in Week One of the 2020 season could make things worse.

It definitely won’t make things better.
On the surface, an obvious question arises: why would Thomas wait until June to get surgery with a four-month recovery/rehab period? A clear answer hasn’t emerged, but Nick Underhill of NewOrleansFootball.com has pieced together some facts that could make the Saints less than thrilled about the manner in which Thomas handled the situation.
Per Underhill, Thomas saw a specialist after the 2020 season ended. The specialist believed that Thomas possibly could rehab the injury and avoid surgery. Thomas, according to the report, was supposed to spend a month or so attempting to heal the ankle and then return to the specialist to see whether surgery would be needed. Underhill reports that the return visit never happened.

Underhill adds that the events of the next few months are unclear. When Thomas returned to the Saints in June for offseason workouts (it’s unclear why he wasn’t there earlier), the Saints realized his ankle “was still in bad shape.” (Coach Sean Payton said in June of the Thomas ankle injury, “So far, so good.”) The team then told Thomas to get the surgery performed. And now he needs six to eight weeks after surgery to heal the ligament and six to eight weeks thereafter to get the repaired ankle into full football shape.

If Underhill’s report is accurate (and I’m not doubting it, I’m just qualifying what I’m about to say next), there’s a very good chance the Saints are pissed at him for delaying the process. If he’d returned to the specialist and gotten surgery by March, he’d possibly be ready to go from the start of training camp. Indeed, surgery was deemed “likely” in the aftermath of the team’s playoff loss to Tampa Bay in January.

To the extent the Saints aren’t happy with Thomas, that emotion isn’t new. Last October, Jeff Duncan of TheAthletic.com wrote at length about the concerns the team had with Thomas. Then there’s the fact that, as PFT reported in late October, the Thomas camp was trying to get another team to make the Saints a trade offer for Thomas. No offers were ever made.

That part shows that any hard feelings are (or at least at the time were) mutual. Now, with the team potentially stewing over Thomas dragging his feet regarding his ankle and Thomas possibly (underscore possibly) taking his time as a not-so-subtle middle finger to the team, where does it go from here?

A trade before the 2021 deadline wouldn’t change his $8.9 million bonus proration for the current year, and it would result in the team taking a $22.7 million cap charge in 2022. Although Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis has shown that he knows how to work salary-cap magic, the team surely would prefer avoiding that kind of dead-money load next year. (That said, they would offset the cap hit by avoiding $15.6 million in compensation for Thomas in 2022.)

However it all plays out, the tea leaves suggest that the milk quite possibly remains spoiled between player and team. If the Saints can get off to a good start without him this year, the Saints could decide that the time has come to listen to offers — if, of course, they get any.

Thomas won't be here next year imo...

Speaking Wednesday, Saints coach Sean Payton said Michael Thomas should have undergone his ankle operation earlier instead of waiting until June.
"I'm going to leave it at that," was the extent of Payton's quote. There had been some loose media questioning about the timing of Thomas' operation, but the press was not in a position to judge. They are not the player or a team official. Payton, on the other hand, would not have made his comments without a full understanding of Thomas' situation. It is unclear if Thomas was simply too optimistic and opted to rehab longer than was reasonable, or if this is a Scottie Pippen situation and he deliberately waited to send a message to the team. Whatever happened, he now seems likely to miss at least the first month of the regular season, and perhaps land on reserve/PUP, which would cost him six games. At least from the outside, Thomas' relationship with the Saints has seemed to rapidly sour over the past few years. Thomas is signed through 2024, but this is the final season he has guaranteed money, and it is a modest $1 million.

Sounds like he has a shitty attitude (I mean his social media attitude is terrible anyway, sounds like off field isn't much better), atleast would net a great trade.

You'll be better off without him. Toxic attitudes like his spread like cancer in a lockeroom.

Michael Thomas spent something like multi-millions to open some charity or social club for disadvantaged youth

I never read too much into this kind of stuff, a lot of the time players just do it for a tax break.

NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill reports Saints WR Deonte Harris was arrested in early July for driving while allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
Harris' arrest occurred in Maryland on July 16 at 1:27 a.m. according to police records. Although no discipline has been handed down by the league yet, these situations typically come with a two-game suspension. Harris, New Orleans' primary punt returner, was in line to open the year in the slot for Michael Thomas (ankle) prior to this news. Marquez Callaway is the next man up on special teams and will have no choice but to play alongside Tre'Quan Smith, Chris Hogan, and whomever else the Saints have available if Harris is in fact sidelined for two games. All are viable darts in re-draft leagues, but it's also possible the Saints simply crater on offense with only Alvin Kamara available to move the ball.

Holy ******* s**t the saints may as well tank this season.
I feel sorry for Winston, dude wants to restart his career and he's gunna be throwing into open grass since we have zero receiving options ffs.
A week ago I was thinking "it's ok, def will take time but off is still good, has some champion interior guys and 2 of the best weapons in AK and CGM who will put up scores"...
Uh huh.

If I open this damn thread tomorrow and AK has f’ed up in some way, drugs, arrested, COVID, I'm out.
Big chance Saints go 1-5 at best to start the year and there's no coming back from that.
Ugh.

Was always going to be a rough year given the cap situation heading into the offseason. Will be interesting to see what Smith and Trautman can do with a far bigger role than they've had before.

Saints signed CB Prince Amukamara, formerly of the Bears.

The Saints also added cornerback KeiVarae Russell. Amukamara was signed to the Cardinals practice squad last year but never got called up to the active roster. He was previously signed and then cut by the Raiders prior to landing in Arizona. At 32 years old, the former first-round pick will likely play a rotational for New Orleans.
