Loved Thurley - a real surprise packet. Competed hard and was a real forward option at times. Really impressed.

Gibson great first half but faded in the second. Will make it - excellent first up effort.

Green - tagged well and played better than stats would suggest. Liked his commitment.

Hay - a shocker. Error riddled game, looked slow, well beaten. Give him time to settle.

Agree with your analysis gokangas.

Hamish had a big influence in the first half which was great (listen to KB on Monday, he will go on about our Hamish-Hale combo - he is like a dog with a bone when he makes a statement)

Hay was average b/c he gave away a couple of bad frees. Over enthustiastic, not too worried.

Really happy with Thurley's game - not only did he present well, but chased really hard. Should have got 3 holding the ball decisions in the first half.

happy with the new boys tonight except for Jon Hay.

He looked slow, fumbled too much and didnt look like he knew too much about it. He got smashed by Damon White early and if he keeps playing like this against a Sydney(Barry Hall) or even an Essendon with Lloyd then we will get towled up, i really hope he is just getting into the swing of things and really improve from here.

Aint that the truth! He drives me mad with the way he keeps repeating the same sentence over and over again. I can't stand listening to him. One day he was going on and on about how he had found out that Anthony Callea was going to hand the baton to Grant Hackett at the Commonwealth Games. Well, he was gobsmacked by this and he must have repeated it about 10 times before I switched it off!

He was very good, and an important pick up for us given the number of forward pocket players we have lost over the last 3 odd years.

Gibson great first half but faded in the second. Will make it - excellent first up effort.
I think he 'faded' because Port didn't go forward a great deal after half time.

Green - tagged well and played better than stats would suggest. Liked his commitment.
Was happy with his effort, I think he needs to get more of the ball though.

Hay - a shocker. Error riddled game, looked slow, well beaten. Give him time to settle.
Hay didn't have a great game and while his man kicked 3 goals he was given some extremely soft free kicks for 2 of those. He has had a very short pre-season due to his existing injury so he will need more time to get some fitness.

I think our defense is very different to 2005 and the boys are not quite settled back there and a few times there was poor communication, it settled down a lot when Archer went back there and marshalled the troops.

His last kick was a shocker, but at least with Hay, Watt and Brown we had the ability to change things up, push Brown forward, etc and I think in the long-run we will be much better for it.

I liked Kasey Greens job tonight. Thought he worked really hard off the ball. Hard to always spot on TV but it looked like him putting on some of those strong sheperds. Didn't get a lot of the pill but when he did he looked pretty good with it. Stuart Dew is a gun but was harldy sighted tonight so that speaks volumes for Green's game.

Loved Big Hamish's game. He is the real deal. He is a ruckmen who is comfortable with the ball in his hand. Their aren't too many of them around. He could be a real player this one. Actually i felt more confident when he was on then I did when Hale was on who had a shocker.

Gibson was one of our only winners early on when we were looking bad. He was one of our best up until half time then faded right out of it but did a lot more then what is expected of someone in thier first game so i was wrapped.

Thurley gave us another option when we were finding it tough to get a tall forward presence. Seemed to work in well with Thommo. Was hard at it didn't mind the rough stuff.

Jon Hay had a real shocker and even when not being beaten by his direct opponent still managed to stuff up a sideways kick of 20 meters under no pessure. He was woeful but it's his first game for North and hopefully he has some pride and tries to get fitter and at least win a few contests in the future. We need him to hold down Fullback so he must do better in contests in the future.

Maybe I was looking the other way, or sipping my beer or something, but Hay didn't seem too bad to me.

He was making the contests and overall, complemented the back six just right i thought

I mean how many goals did they kick after half time anyway?

You must have been looking the other way or sipping your beer.

In all fairness he had a shocker and doesn't deserve to hold his place in the team next week. That said he will and lets all give him time to settle into the team.

But he played very poorly tonight.

Now you're delusional.
He is our full back.
Plenty more lives.

Ditto!

Hay was rusty early but he did some very good things in the last quarter when Port were coming hard. Refer to the replay.

Had a real soft free kick played against him that resulted in a goal.

Had a poor first half, but got better as the game went on.

Not as bad as some are saying.

Will be well worth his spot when we come up against a side with a Gorilla in it.

Honestly i thought we were really good defensively tonight

Hay's shockers must have come when I was arguing with the bouncer (who looked like he was out of ZZ Top) not to change the channel when some whinging f*cking essendon prat (who also looked like he was out of ZZ Top, except the one without a beard) wanted to watch that game.

As luck would have it I must have seemed psycho/pumped up enough that he backed off and left the mighty Roos on the big screen. One small step for me...

Anyway the only time i remember seeing Hay, he cleared the ball, to Simmo I think and we were away. Not to say he didn't stuff up, but like you suggest plenty of time to settle

Didn't think Hay played a great game, but I don't think it was as shocking as some here have described it.

He didn't lose too many one on ones which must be noted. Yes he gave away some silly frees and wasn't great overall, but to me, he is miles better at one on ones than Watt will ever be.

This wins the Geoff Walsh Award for most hysterical post, by a mile.

I really do wonder what exactly some people expect from a key defender.

It wasn't Hay's best game that he has played, but to put into simple terms for the Port and Hawthorn supporters out there:

Hay > Motlop.

See if you'd felled the Esserndern idiot with a single blow, and I'd been the judge when it came to court, not only would I have fully exonerated you, I would have ordered the Black And Red Bawbag to pay you a couple of grand in compensation for insolence, as well as $500 in the spazzy kids fund for good measure.

Esserndern supporters - can there be anything worse?

Mmm. some good points there. However both these lugnuts (the bouncer & the bummer buffoon) were big units

Instead of raw violence, i employed the fanatical lone Roo fan/few pots under the belt method of making sure the boys wern't taken off the screen. worked a treat.

It all started cause some f*ckwit wanted to watch the cricket, and the bouncer was going to switch the Roos on the humungous screen to the bummers game.

It was at this point that I "Oi" -ed him (over the top of AC/DC playing "jailbreak" very loud) as his finger hovered over the button. he came over to hassle me, somehow I managed to talk him out of it, and the bumholes game ended up on some tiny tv in the corner :D

Like i said one small step for me..

Yes, I have employed this technique myself before.;)

A North fan won the day, at the expense of essuden.

Win/win situation.
