new ps3????

Will it definitely be on the 18th though?

Is it likely, if there is a price drop, that it will be some time before occurring. How much is the price likely to drop?

Also saw this, although not exactly concrete evidence. http://www.thefragfile.com/2009/08/03/exclusive-ps3-slimprice-drop-coming-at-gamescom/

Seems to be much more than a rumour.

**** I hate waiting ;).

I would wait

A few weeks could save you $100 plus

I would say if there is aprice drop, it would be effective immediatly

Yeah if there's only an announcement for a cheaper PS3 Slim, then you would think current models would go on sale, or most people would just wait for the cheaper one.

FWIW, don't know if I saw it mentioned in this thread, but a PS3 Slim was listed on the German Amazon a few days back (with no price, photos, or release date), but has since been removed. It was definitely there though, I saw it myself when it was still working, but yeah, Amazon may have just messed up or something I guess.

-edit-
yeah here is google's cached version of it...

Have personally been waiting freaking yonkers for the slim and/or a price drop. Then this post below convinced me to quit waiting and pick up a current model unit (sorry if this has already been posted):

http://au.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=26971607

Cut and paste of the alleged change list:

"OtherOS" support has been removed.
You still get 2 USB ports.

Hard drive sizes will be bigger, it will come in 120Gb and 250Gb flavours. It's still replaceable and will actually be slightly easier as it has been relocated to the front of the console.

It will NOT have any "new" features, such as backwards compatibility or enhanced peripheral support. It's just a PS3, but slightly smaller and cheaper.
The power supply is still internal, but a different power cable will be used.
Rear ports are still the same: 1x HDMI, 1x Sony AV port, 1x Optical, 1x Ethernet. And of course a power port.
Release date and official announcement are not final.

Price is undetermined, but make no mistake, this is a "slimmed" PS3 in ever sense of the word. It's as cheap as can possibly be, so expect it to launch with a smaller price tag than what you're paying now in your respective territories.

Internally, several daughter boards have been removed, but all functionality is still there. This is due to a more advanced manufacturing process. It still uses a few extra boards, though, we're not quite at PSTwo levels yet.

A Cheaper Blu-ray drive is being used. It wont be any slower, but expect to see similar issues that another competitor had a while ago.
Touch-sensitive buttons on the front for power/eject are gone in favour of cheaper push buttons.
It has a slightly different startup screen. Only slightly.
It's about 50% smaller than current PS3s.
It wont be called the "PS3 Slim". The PS1 "slim" and the PS2 "slim" were never officially called the "slim", either.

In short: It's a smaller PS3, but that's it. No new features, no special hardware, just smaller and cheaper.

******

Who knows if this guy is correct but the possible removal of ability to install other OS' and a cheaper blu ray drive is enough to dispel any excitement that I had. That and the intolerable waiting of course - waiting to save money for what could be a poorer quality console just doesn't have the same appeal.

I think the bit about BC has an air of truth about it- why would you only offer BC to new customers and burn your more loyal customers who purchased the unit at a higher price tag? Makes much more sense - and it's far more profitable - to bring it in as a system update for ALL users when the PS2 has run it's course. The PS2 is a cash cow now, and it's incredible games library will be a cash cow in a year or so through the PSN. I don't buy any suggestion that existing older PS3 owners would want to buy a new version of the console when they probably own a PS2 already anyway. People want BC for convenience, it's not a must have.

I got my ps3 last friday. I don't have the patience to wait around to save a bit of cash (plus, I love the look of the ps3). I REALLY hope they bring in software ps2 emulation for us though, as there are a bunch of ps2 games I'm dying to play (especially MGS3)

What price will the slim (if there is one) retail for you reckon? I've decided to sell my 360 and buy a PS3 so I might just wait till this comes out

I'm not betting man but I would venture USD $100, so about $130-ish. Worth waiting for provided the slim gets good reviews.

I don't think they would drop it too much more because they'd want to be able to keep dropping the price every so often. Sales this year have shown that people are still willing to pay a premium for the PS3, despite them comfortably losing the numbers war overall.

Ummmm no.

I think $399 US will be closer.

I think he meant $130 price drop

LOL I've been BF'd! Should have been clearer. Yes $100 USD price drop.

No wait come to think of it maybe Sony should be giving them away for the outrage that is no IR port, 2 measley USB's, no BC and NO ISO SUPPORT!!

I think I hear a fanboy coming...

Yes... I thought that was quite obvious because he said "I don't think it will drop too much more".

There have been rumours circulating around the net that the release of the PS3 slim and GT5 will be simultaneous.

I doubt it though, because Polyphony Digital only have an exhibit for only the PSP at GamesCom, not for the PS3. However, Sony could still announce the release date, but that seems a bit unorthodox considering that PD is there and all.

I think the PS3 slim announcement is almost guaranteed at GamesCom?

There are also rumours of an Xbox 360 Elite price cut for August the 30th, according to Kotaku, so Sony might want to get things moving along.

Is there any chance it will be backward compat.?
Possibly. I seriously doubt it will have hardware-based backwards compatibility, but I wouldn't rule out software-based backwards compatibility, as seen in the 60GB and 80GB models.

looks like i was wrong about it not being the slim model - I like it and at $499 its great value - why would u buy a blu-ray now? I can see it having a big spike in sales.

Still no HDMI cabe

yeh not coming with hdmi cables is just silly

at least jb usually puts it in the bundles that they do

you can't fully appreciate the current gen without a hd setup running how is was intended.

having seen one of my mates playing cod4 on one of the first gen lcd's is so disgusting it's not even funny

pieces of rubble in the distance look like a prone sniper etc...

even the ps3 menu looks AWFUL
