I saw the thread on the new coaching staff and thought it may also be worthwhile to change the recruiting staff. There are few recruits from the last few years, with a few exceptions that really stand out as top footballers. I think its time to have a change. What do you think?

If it's not time for a change in staff - and it might be - it is certainly time to change what they've gotten to work with. Every side that is currently succeeding in the AFL in 2004 has built their side through successful drafting - NOT trading, NOT free agency, NOT rookee listing. We need picks!

1. Is James Fantasia the only recruiting manager our club has ever had???

2. He hasn't got an overly great track record has he???
1. No

2. He has a pretty good record with late draft picks. As a club we have a pretty poor record with early picks. More often than not, they have failed for various reasons.

Think the addition of Hawthorns John Turnbull is a good move, obviously aimed at strengthening our recruiting dept.

Does anyone know whether John is to be Adelaide based or Melbourne based?

I think it was a great move.

I am not sure where he would be based but I assume he would be responsible for the TAC Cup. Very smart move considering that 70% of the draft pool is from TAC Cup

I think the playing of youngsters, trialling most listed players, Strenghthening recruiting, are all positive signs from the club.
An indication they have a plan for the future, and indicative of a professional well run club!:)

For those interested here is our entire recruiting department (including scouts). Obviously John Turnbull is yet to be added to this list so it must be recent appointment. One gets the feeling that there are some family ties in this lot. I don't understand why we don't have a scout in NT and QLD. I know Jock McLeod was our NT scout in the past.

I would love to get Kerls on as a scout. He is still the best judge of football I have come across. He would certainly uncover a few diamonds in the rough.

Its not his failures

Recruiting is not just about James, there are a miriad of people involved in the end decisions, and his job is to capture the information on all of the potential players, and offer up his opinion

Then the horse trading comes into play inside the club, and then outside. There are 16 clubs looking at the same stock and you must admit that we have not been in that good of a postion to get the good early draft picks in the last few years.

I havent heard many complain about the Jarman shuffle etc, but the last few years have been lean, but I am sure it was more than James who made the decision to draft Carey etc and go for a flag.

To do a St Kilda we will need a few years of pain to get some good pics, but can we stomach that, Im not sure.

Even with the early draft pics, you are not assured of winner, based on some of the ones we have got, and some of the failures at other clubs that were picked in early rounds

Its a bit like looking at kids driving go carts and then trying to pick one who in a few years will win you an F1 or V8 super car championship, there are a lot of good go cart drivers at 16 but not many realise their potential and make it all the way through

And thats why the success rate of all draftees making it is only around 30%.

Its not as simple as many would have us believe.

But how long have those guys been doing that job?

In the last three years we have taken the following from Victoria.

Watts
Hudson
Reilly
Finnin
Schuback

Finnin is the only failure so far. Hudson is doing the job he was recruited for and the others look like being decent long term selections.
