My first post in a while but I wanted to have my say

The SA Cricket Association today appointed former Australian women's team mentor Mark Sorell as Redbacks coach.

Sorell has no first class playing experience but was a stalwart keeper-batsman for Salisbury (Northern Districts) and spent five seasons in the SACA training squad from 1987-92.

An accredited Cricket Australia level three coach, Sorell fits SACA's search for a "man manager" able to guide specialist coaches.

SACA’s High Performance Director Rod Marsh said Sorell was the ideal candidate to lead and develop the young Redbacks squad.

“Mark has a great deal of knowledge in both local and international cricket, and his recent experience with the Southern Stars has given him valuable exposure to elite coaching methods,” he said.

------------------

I know of Mark through some work I did with the SACA and Cricket Council and while a nice enough bloke I think this is the wrong direction for SA cricket...not for his qualifications but for his self interest in not rocking the boat.

I think SA Cricket needed a person to come in from outside and rock some established boats... Mark wont do this.

I hope to be back here in a year or two apologising for getting it wrong... somehow I dont think so but good luck Mark

Rubbish mate - if you reckon you know Motsa, then you will know that he is a non nonsense character. There are no short cuts, no hidden agendas and certainly no pampering. SACA has made the right call in that lets take focus off coach and getting it back on the players....

I have heard that some players have already been told their contracts will not be renewed, I am suprised by this, I thought the coach would want the final say on that.

Hope Mark does well, I have met him before through my work as an Umpire, seems like a good bloke. Although good blokes dont alwys win games. :)

Nice to see a South Australian (Mark Sorrell) get the Job........Hope he has the personallity to be his own man...and not a puppet....
otherwise we will all be (sorrelled) browned off

that guy used to coach me when i had private tuition at the SACA indoor nets :thumbsu:

he is a very articulate man, hopefully he wil do well ;)

They have to finalise their squad with Cricket Australia pretty soon I think (this week?). A lot of the planning and contracts would have had to be done before the appointment of the coach. Rod Marsh would have had a big say in any decisions that have been made so far I would think. Apparently the are going with 14 contracted players plus the four Aussie contract guys and then the rookies. I reckon that Tom Plant and Trent Kelly will miss out.

I think Sorrell is a good appointment. He has been involved close to the top level for a few years now, is up to speed with all the modern coaching trends and methods and has the respect of the playing group from his time at the SACA where he was very well regarded. I like the fact the we went local too. Our previous forays in overseas or interestate recruits have been a dismal failure (as far as players are concerned anyway) and when we went for a 'big name' coach it ended in tears, decimating cricket in our state and also indirectly ruining it in the second largest country in the world.

you have guessed well, I have heard that both Tom Plant and Trent Kelly have missed out.

Tom plant is no suprise but I thought Trent Kelly is a bit unlucky, especially with Tait more than likely going to miss most of the summer.

I think it is trent Kelly anyway, he plays for West torrens?

Yep, that's him and the whisper is that Peter George, his West Torrens team mate, is the one that will replace him, but maybe on the rookie list. Bit of a surprise, George is a young, tall, raw quick. Took quite a few grade wickets I think but I'm not sure he even played at 2nd XI level last season.

There were rumours that Mick Miller was going to get another contract - he walked out on a contract a few years ago and has been playing up in Darwin. Another was that Mark Harrity would come out of retirement! Don't believe either of them to be true though.

My Tip
Senior List: C Borgas (c), J Borgas, Elliott, D Harris, Adcock, Lehmann, Ferguson, Cosgrove, Cameron, Manou, Deitz, Rofe, R Harris, Cleary plus the guys on Australian contracts - Gillespie, Tait, Cullen, Bailey

Not sure about the rookies but hopefully Andy Delmont from Uni will get one - he's a gun.

I have also heard that George will get a gig.

I think Adcock will be Captain, I have heard that if nobes is still involved next year Cleary will walk.

Not too sure about Rookies but I think James Smith will get a gig, played a couple of ones dayers and 20/20. he also won the young cricketer of the year award.

Georgy played 2nd XI in the season just gone. Played against Victoria at Adelaide #2 during 4 hot days in February

Was Greggy Blewett contracted for this year as well?
yes, they need to pay him out. Another good reason that we had 4 guys recieve CA contracts.

I hope with the new coach Blewy may play again for SA, unlikely though with Nobes still pulling the strings.

Greg Blewett played his last game for Kensington in the Twenty20 final late February. Make of that what you will: but i think he's given SA Cricket the old heave ho

It's a funny one with Blewett. He's still contracted for next season so does he need to go through the motions of going along to all the training sessions to collect his pay cheque? Or do they negotiate a settlement and part ways?

He may just give up playing and stick with his media role. Seems to do well in front of the camera.

he does very well in front of the cameras, and he was a very good commentator during the world cup.

I don't think he will play AT ALL from now on. The contract will have to be paid out, who knows from there.

Do we really need him? nothing against the guy, but i'd almost suggest no. He could bring a bit of experience to the side, he could help the youngsters. Who knows.

interesting stuff happening in SA Cricket at the moment

I hope the two parties end their vendeeta, Greg is a quality player that had a bad patch. He could be the difference between us and a Title this year. We need to consolidate the batting, because Boof cant do it all himself. If we have to pay him, we may as well use his services.

Speaking to Blewey during the WC, he knows he won't get a game whilst Nobes is chairman of selectors.

With Boof in the team, no need for Blewey, but if Boof is injured, he would be worth playing for his experience IMO.

Nobes can go **** himself, he should of been sacked along with Phillips.

Nobes was the guest speaker at our Presentation Dinner (west Torrens). For someone who's supposedly a club legend (*supposedly*), he was very abrupt, and tbh, arrogant.

His sons a fair sticker for adelaide though. Batted 4 in their (luckY) premiership winning B grade.

On the contracts, Georgey has a full one and Kels missed out.

He has since signed a contract with WA. Silly decision in my book. Over 40 wickets after Christmas in A grade including 5 for in the GF against KEnsingtons batting line up. Got clocked at 149km/h in a 20/20 game too for the redbacks.

I guess With Putsy, Georgey and Chaddy Sayers coming through he was just too far down the pecking order.
