My first post in a while but I wanted to have my say
The SA Cricket Association today appointed former Australian women's team mentor Mark Sorell as Redbacks coach.
Sorell has no first class playing experience but was a stalwart keeper-batsman for Salisbury (Northern Districts) and spent five seasons in the SACA training squad from 1987-92.
An accredited Cricket Australia level three coach, Sorell fits SACA's search for a "man manager" able to guide specialist coaches.
SACA’s High Performance Director Rod Marsh said Sorell was the ideal candidate to lead and develop the young Redbacks squad.
“Mark has a great deal of knowledge in both local and international cricket, and his recent experience with the Southern Stars has given him valuable exposure to elite coaching methods,” he said.
------------------
I know of Mark through some work I did with the SACA and Cricket Council and while a nice enough bloke I think this is the wrong direction for SA cricket...not for his qualifications but for his self interest in not rocking the boat.
I think SA Cricket needed a person to come in from outside and rock some established boats... Mark wont do this.
I hope to be back here in a year or two apologising for getting it wrong... somehow I dont think so but good luck Mark
Hopefully he can bring a few of the women over to strengthen our side.

They have to finalise their squad with Cricket Australia pretty soon I think (this week?). A lot of the planning and contracts would have had to be done before the appointment of the coach. Rod Marsh would have had a big say in any decisions that have been made so far I would think. Apparently the are going with 14 contracted players plus the four Aussie contract guys and then the rookies. I reckon that Tom Plant and Trent Kelly will miss out.I have heard that some players have already been told their contracts will not be renewed, I am suprised by this, I thought the coach would want the final say on that.
you have guessed well, I have heard that both Tom Plant and Trent Kelly have missed out. They have to finalise their squad with Cricket Australia pretty soon I think (this week?). I think Sorrell is a good appointment. He has been involved close to the top level for a few years now, is up to speed with all the modern coaching trends and methods and has the respect of the playing group from his time at the SACA where he was very well regarded. I like the fact the we went local too. Our previous forays in overseas or interestate recruits have been a dismal failure (as far as players are concerned anyway) and when we went for a 'big name' coach it ended in tears, decimating cricket in our state and also indirectly ruining it in the second largest country in the world.
Yep, that's him and the whisper is that Peter George, his West Torrens team mate, is the one that will replace him, but maybe on the rookie list. Bit of a surprise, George is a young, tall, raw quick. Took quite a few grade wickets I think but I'm not sure he even played at 2nd XI level last season.I think it is trent Kelly anyway, he plays for West torrens?
yes, they need to pay him out. Another good reason that we had 4 guys recieve CA contracts. Was Greggy Blewett contracted for this year as well?![]()
He may just give up playing and stick with his media role. Seems to do well in front of the camera.Greg Blewett played his last game for Kensington in the Twenty20 final late February. Make of that what you will: but i think he's given SA Cricket the old heave ho
Speaking to Blewey during the WC, he knows he won't get a game whilst Nobes is chairman of selectors.he does very well in front of the cameras, and he was a very good commentator during the world cup.
I don't think he will play AT ALL from now on. The contract will have to be paid out, who knows from there.
Do we really need him? nothing against the guy, but i'd almost suggest no. He could bring a bit of experience to the side, he could help the youngsters. Who knows.
interesting stuff happening in SA Cricket at the moment
Nobes can go **** himself, he should of been sacked along with Phillips.
