I want to hang onto this rivalry. Its embedded in my psyche. I cant live without it. Just too much fun while the two teams/clubs are absolute crap. But they'll be back...

Carlton have been crap for 20 years and Essendon have been crap for 11 years. Not sure either will ever return to their successful past any time soon.

Carlton and Essendon will always be our traditional rivals but in 2016 I think our main rivals will be Richmond and trying to do our bit to block Hawthorn equalling our record.

The suppliments saga has obviously tarnished Essendon's reputation and my extension it has diminished our rivalry. The ANZAC day game helped to build a respectful relationship between the two clubs and unfortunately that has been greatly eroded now.

I don't think it is realistic to think that the AFL would replace Essendon but they might consider opening up the MCG game to other teams. I would not be surprised if the game is given to two different sides in 2017, such as a replay of the previous grand final. This would be very disappointing.

Yep. Huge call, at the start of 2015 I touted them as top 4. Having watched them last season I just don't see where there improvement will come from. Too many down hill skiers, not much heart.

Unless their best 6 all have AA type years I can't see them doing too much damage. Like Rance I think they are very over rated.

Agree. I think they're completely over rated and can't understand why anyone apart from their deluded supporters thinks they're a threat let alone a premiership chance.

Why do you think this? Things change, I don't think there is an always in terms of rivals. Melbourne was once significant but now is no longer anything much at all. The Carlton rivalry needs a refresh, even the whole MM debacle failed to light a real spark under our games with them. Essendon I see as more a modern tradition and frankly are not worthy. Most non-Collingwood fans love to hate us so its pretty easy to create a rivalry, it simply requires our supporters to buy in. I'd like to see us build up a rivalry with an interstate club. The problem is footy is too pc now so the sort of fuel that builds rivalries is scarce. Our only hope is that Eddie will mouth off a bit and stir some angst out of one club or another.

Well, We've been simmering one with Geelong since 2007.

Richmond looks like it will be re-ignited this year thanks to them managing to actually beat us* last year

I'd say this year a rivalry may begin with Hawthorn. I reckon we'll beat them this year.

Beat us both times last year. 1st time by a Kick but Made us look like a Joke the 2nd time.

Played Finals last 2 years and we have not

And we have still won as many finals as them in the past 3 seasons.

From memory yes, but I lost in November 1934 after Peter Pan (who I had a pretty penny on) won the Melbourne Cup and I went on a 2 day bender.

The club should release some new ones to taunt the Hawks this season, then again maybe wait until they fail and then release a 4 peat cap to taunt them.

You tend to have rivalries with teams that are good. Hawthorn continues to be up and about and are probably our real rivals to beat us past Essendon and Carlton for most premierships. I think it'll be Hawthorn.
