Opinion New rivals needed ...

The Richmond rivalry looks set to re-ignite.

It will be the must see match this year..

Indeed ...

... Teams will be competing for the Adam Treloar cup

Why do you think this? Things change, I don't think there is an always in terms of rivals. Melbourne was once significant but now is no longer anything much at all. The Carlton rivalry needs a refresh, even the whole MM debacle failed to light a real spark under our games with them. Essendon I see as more a modern tradition and frankly are not worthy. Most non-Collingwood fans love to hate us so its pretty easy to create a rivalry, it simply requires our supporters to buy in. I'd like to see us build up a rivalry with an interstate club. The problem is footy is too pc now so the sort of fuel that builds rivalries is scarce. Our only hope is that Eddie will mouth off a bit and stir some angst out of one club or another.

BEEN RIVALS FOR OVER 100 YEARS AND THEY BEEN NOTHING ELSE.

IT BE A SAD DAY IN FOOTY WHEN COLLINGWOOD AND THERE FANS DON'T SEE ESSENDON AND ESPECIALLY CARLTON AS OUR ARCH-RIVALS

That's only because they've been competitive TD

We used to have a huge rivalry with Melbourne (see Carlton) and the reason that dropped off is because Melbourne have been uncompetitive over a long period of time.

Carlton is heading that way - for supporters like you and me Carlton will always be arch rivals - but for Collingwood supporters under the age of 18, they'll be wondering why they really should give a toss about that pathetic cellar dweller club???

Passionate response.

When I was a kid Essendon did not figure in my sense of the pies arch-rivals. Carlton then Richmond would have been my order. Melbourne rivalry had already fallen by the wayside. Greater/older minds than mine may shed more light on this but its my impression Essendon has really only gained significance since 1995 and the drawn clash. Personally I don't see them as an arch-rival at all, even now. The significance of this rivalry is likely to take a huge dive with Essendon's ability to compete and their actions, as drug cheats, will impact on attendance.

The rivalry against Carlton has had incredible legs given that both teams haven't really peaked at similar times over the last few decades and there hasn't been a great deal of fuel (argy bargy or slagging each other off). My sense is that its dying though. The MM affair coupled with Daisy defecting should have seen massive crowds and some real passion but it didn't.

Rivalries are helped along if the players/coach invest a little bit in it. They have with Essendon because of the Anzac day clash but, despite what Bucks said, certainly haven't put any extra energy into smashing the blues. Football has become too professional for the coach/players to value one home and away game over another.

I don't think it is that sad. Everyone loves to hate us and we, as fans, will always find one or more teams to hate with a passion.

Modern rivalries with Geelong, Hawthorn, St.Kilda and Brisbane have been mentioned. They were the sides we fought with in finals. Beating some, losing others. Key term is finals. Interesting how we talk about rivalries as if we're successful. We've missed the finals last two years. Yet we talk about Carlton, Essendon and Brisbane as diminished rivals. Maybe Hawthorn talk about us in the same way?

Let's make September and see who shits us the most.

Those kids would need a Histroy Lesson to say why Carlton are our Number 1 Rival and always will be

Maybe you and I need a history lesson about why Melbourne are a big rival and always will be ;)

It's all perspective :)

Rivalry is built from emotion.
Lost grand finals (Carlton, Melbourne), the felling of a champion (St Kilda, Essendon) or the poaching of players (Richmond) are the catalysts for rivalry. All are highly emotive as they take something from you.

Modern day, the Geelong matches are ones I look forward to for the quality of the contests.

Carlton however are still my no.1, no matter what. The build up to these games and the crowds in the '80's & '90's was without peer.
I look forward to the day we move past them on games differential and premierships.

Lost grand finals (Carlton, Melbourne),

+ St Kilda ('66) + Richmond ('80) + ...

On a personal level, I consider North to be a big rival because '77 was my first season as a Collingwood supporter and those memories are etched.

Quality of the contest is an essential ingredient.

That'd explain why St Kilda have never been a serious rival.

And Melbourne have fallen off the perch

Carlton however are still my no.1, no matter what. The build up to these games and the crowds in the '80's & '90's was without peer.

Still a couple years away (122:125)

... and premierships.

Ditto :)

The teams I dislike most has been influenced more by the supporters of those clubs than losses or injuries.

Previously Carlton and Melbourne but now get so much pleasure if we beat Melbourne, Geelong, Richmond and Hawthorn.

Perhaps when Carlton become successful again, they will go back on the list as it is unnatural to leave them out.

It's all about Hawks and Tiges this year

Playing Hawthorn for the first time in round 22 dilutes the meaning of that rivalry. May as well not be playing them this year.

That could be a Huge Game. Us trying to make Finals and them Making Top 4

Have to agree Carlton are still the number 1 for me.

I will add though on a personal level I have so many Essendon people in my life who really annoy me. My friends who barrack for Carlton are actually good people, shocking i know.

So while watching the games i still hate Carlton the most but when considering the aftermath of a loss, Essendon are the bigger worry. Hopefully we won't have to worry about that for a while

A lot, but not all, of the Carlton supporters seem to have lost their arrogance / will to live due to the amount of time their team has been non competitive.

The bombers fans are still bewilderingly blind in a lot of cases after their clubs mighty fall from grace.

The Tigers who have been nobodies on the AFL landscapes for so long, have decided they are not only worthy now, but seemingly the dominant club in the land. At least from the perspective of their intellectually inept fans viewpoint. That's why they annoy me the most.

The cats fans seem to understand that their dominant period is over and don't seem to be so annoyingly confident as they once were.

The saints are trying their hardest to become relevant again but you have to admire any clubs fans that can stick it out after the miserable run they have had since their inception.

The Demons always seem to promise to come good then somehow don't. They play their game or 2 of the season v us then slink back to their Land Cruisers, never to be heard of until the next Collingwood match up.

The Swans fans do seem to be oblivious to the incredible leg up they are constantly getting front the AFL. The Melbourne based ones seem passionate and their real annoyance comes from their inability to accept what is patently obvious. They'd be dead as a club without the constant handouts and gifts they receive from the AFL and, effectively, from us.

The Hawks fans strut about like the AFL is their birch. But it is....

Sydney campaigners have just climbed a few spots up the ladder.

Yep. Just have to read the Trolls that have come over from the Theatre Goers Board

No matter what Carlton will always be number one for me. Closely followed by the bombers. I hope we smash both this year. No sympathy for either of them.
Agree, aside from the closeness. For me Essendon are not close.

We will be using the Hawks as a warm for the finals. Hawks will be fighting for the 8. We will be getting some good hard finals practice as we waltz in to the finals on our way to another flag.
