Roof Policy for AFL Games

The roof over the arena at Colonial Stadium will be closed for every night match.

The roof will be open for every day match unless it is raining.

The roof will never be closed during play, so if it needs to be closed during a day match it would be done so at quarter, half or three quarter time.

From a TV spectator viewpoint it is far better to close the roof for the 20 minutes the sun is likely to shine each match. The shadow cast by the stands makes it very messy at times.
Incidentaly, with the roof closed is more noise heard?

Also, what are those colored things on the new bypass that stick out just before the 'outrun' tunnel?

What ever happened to the old fashioned way we used to see the footy? Out in the open, rain, hail or shine. One minute you're out with the sunscreen, sunglasses and hats, the next the umbrellas and raincoats, cheering reguardless. All this bullshit about opening and closing the roof is stupid! It makes us spectators worry about the roof too much and takes away the concentration of the game.

Again, it all comes down to showing off the 'grand architecture'.

If people are so concerned with the roof system, stay at home! At least you know your own roof won't move!

Forget the building, look at the game!!

Whatever happened to the old suburban grounds?

Frodo,

It is a heap noisier with the roof shut. I usually listen to the radio when I'm at the footy. When Richmond paly there and with the roof shut it causes Rex Hunt to bitch as he can't be heard over the noise.

I'm not sure what you mean by the 'colored things' are they outside the ground on the concourse near the wing?

If so, they have put in some fancy, architectural lights which highlight the outside walls of the stadium. Apparently they are meant to be reflecting the mood of the atmosphere within. I'm not convinced!

The roof is the biggest non-issue about colonial. All the Hacks harped on at length about the roof and forgot to look at the burning issue - that colonial is not economic and clubs playing there have lost money, despite fans having to pay more. They were promised a crock of gold by the AFL, CH7 and the State Government. Instead it's a crock of xxxx.

And what is their and mouthpiece Mike Shehans answer ? Sell waverley. What happens when that money's all spent on inflated salaries etc ? Remember waverley, for all it's faults, was economicially viable.

But I quite like the stadium to go to (colonial that is). But it's obvious the fans prefer it on winter evenings, but prefer the MCG for daytime games.

The point about the shadows on a sunny day is very pertinant. Dis you know the olympic satadium in Sydney has a translucent roof to avoid this shadow effect. If they knew about it why didn't the colonial gang ?

Perhaps we'll end up with the roof shut all the time (except on non use days when they hope in vain that the gras will grow)

Perhaps they should have done like the dutch and made the woof fixed but slide the playing surface in and out.

I have detested the very idea of the Docklands stadium since it started. What happened to tough footy games? Some of my favourite matches have been the gutsy, ugly ones played in downpours. And some of the best supporting I ever did was done wearing my little yellow raincoat and blue gumboots back when I was still living in Melbourne.

The roof idea threatens to throttle the life out of footy.

And what about teams that are reknowned to be wet weather teams such as North Melbourne? I hope the loss for Colonial continues unhindered until it is finally driven into the ground. Bring on the elements. Bad weather is footy weather too.

Retractable stadiums are all the rage here right now; generally they are used open the majority of the time except when it rains or when it is extremely cold/hot.

The design of these stadiums usually takes into account the position of the sun - usually the closed parts that are stationary are located on the east and north sides so that the southern and western exposure is at a maximum (in your cases you would want northern exposure).

I think Colonial's a very poor design for a retractable roof stadium actually. Rather than having the split roof it has, I think a sliding panel design might have been better, with a stationary bit on the east side but a completely unhindered end on the west side to allow for more of the afternoon sun. There would still be a shadow problem but probably not much more significant than any normal stadium in afternoon light anyway.

Yeah Stealth bomber, I've seen those retractable roof stadiums in the USA and they are much better designed then Colonial Stadium, particulalary the baseball parks.

But I think the roof was added on to the stadium for other purposes beside football such concerts, conventions etc.
