New Stadium required

To be frank, Ballarat has more pull than Frankston.

Conveniently, EastLink takes Frankston members right to Princes Park's doorstep.
Conveniently, Eastlink takes People from the North and East directly to Frankston, not to mention the close proximity of Dandenong and Cranbourne, the train line to the city.

Frankston has a lot going for it as a place to put a stadium. unless they build it on Olivers Hill the land would be cheap. Potentially good public transport, would give the Government a reason to fund upgrades of the Frankston Line.

IMO, one day Etihad will be bulldozed and sold to make way for other uses, and another facility will be used.

I dunno about that.

It's estimated worth in 2025 will be a billion dollars.

How exactly will be paying for this new stadium? There is no reason for the State Government to fund it, it would have to be paid for by the AFL.
If the new stadium was privately funded the match returns would be ten time worse then Eithad.

I expect the Gold Coast and GWS investments will start pouring money back in to the AFL coffers by then.

ONE new stadium??

Sorry, but we need 8 new stadiums in Victoria.

Until we get them, no Victorian team actually has a home ground. (apart from Geelong)

Pretty ridiculous situation really for a "professional" sport.

To think that the players are asking for more money, yet the clubs can't even afford to run and maintain their own home grounds....

"Oh, but the AFL is in fantastic shape gPhonque, didn't you know that? Bazillion dollar TV rights deals, record attendances, etc etc.... The game is in the best shape it has ever been!"

Great - then we can all build and have our own home grounds then!

Right?

Then it would just be the AFL subsiding the weaker Victorian teams. It would be much cheaper and far more cost effective to just give the clubs the money outright instead of wasting $150m building an unnecessary stadium.

So I take it you will be paying for it then? Just send the AFL a cheque for $2 billion and they will get right on it.

8 more? only need 7, we are at our home ground and one team gets docklands.

The AFL IS the "weaker Victorian teams" along with all the other existing clubs champ.

All of the existing clubs have a right to profit from the GC and GWS investements.

So you don't think it's a ridiculous situation that in the biggest sporting competition in the country, 8 of the clubs don't even have (or rather, can't afford to have!) their own home grounds?

Ok...

I know.

Carlton
Collingwood
Essendon
Hawthorn
North Melbourne
Richmond
St Kilda
Western Bulldogs

That's 8.

:)

Docklands isn't anyone's home ground. Perhaps it could be....

Try reading the entire post. The AFL building a new stadium would just be the AFL indirectly subsiding the weaker Victorian teams. It would much cheaper for the AFL to directly subsidise the weaker Victorian teams.

FWIW, I don't think a boutique stadium will ever occur without significant government input.

Docklands will become AFL owned in 13 years and the strain for gatetakings will decrease on the smaller clubs.

I think stadiums are expensives and are almost never profitable to build. The original owners of Eithad Stadium lost something $200 million.

More people live past Frankston than live in Ballarat.

Right?

Easier solution - just knock out 5 teams.

It is not about afford, it was the AFL that forced clubs to abandon their suburban stadiums. Geelong only got a reprieve because of the distance but still has to play some games in Melbourne.

Clubs still pay for the upkeep of the grounds they have, they just produce no income any longer. In our case we bulldozed almost everything. :p

That's the point.

I'm of the opinion that the league would sooner build a regional stadium than an outer-suburban one.

Not to mention the gross misapplication of resources that building one in Frankston would represent, where we consider that say, Camberwell or Burwood would represent the epicenter of suburban Melbourne's population concentration.

Fanciful, at best.

Easy solution, just classify Frankston as regional and not outer-suburban

I don't see why they would want to build in either area. At best it is just wasteful, unnecessary infrastructure.

The AFL doesn't want teams playing out of small stadiums, the debate was played out twenty years ago. We'll never see them build a 'boutique' stadium in Melbourne.

there is a fantastic spot for a 25k-30k boutique stadium within royal park. a huge paddock used for nothing, not even ovals and its not heritage listed. just adjacent to royal children's and 200 metres from princes park. Anyone know the piece of land im talking about? also its near the suburbs of North Melbourne and Footscray so nice in a historical perspective. Not sure if we need it but this would be the ideal place.

Define 'either area'?

I agree, at least in the near future.

My reasoning on why Ballarat makes a decent option is vague and weak - but by the same token, stronger than arguments for hosting games at another ground in this city.

They hinge of the strong support that the North Ballarat football club receives, North Melbourne's inability to draw crowds in Melbourne, Hawthorn's ability to capture an audience in a comparably sized city and Geelong supporters willingness to travel to support their team - As well as the AFL's adventurous mindset.
