I'm just glad it wasn't Cockburn, nothing against the place but having a stadium which would host international events in a suburb named after an STD isn't great advertising for Perth

We'll have to wait and see what the scoping study comes up with. IIRC the 2008 stadium had underground parking and moveable seating for rectangular sports. If we drop those two parts, there should be a significant saving in construction costs.

The stadium report did recommend retractable seating, but didn't have an underground car park.

Once you include freeway and road upgrades, rail upgrades, a new train station it will be well beyond $1B.

I'm inclined to think the stadium will cost over a billion by itself. They will spend a lot on ground works, only need to look at the Burswood towers for a reference.

As do I. I like the idea of Perth's sporting stadiums all being close together along the length of East Perth (plus, I live in the area ).

Yep - sink East Parade under it to give it that little bit more room, demolish the transperth building and build a piazza connecting perth oval

i really hope we dont do the underground carpark thing. We saw the problems Docklands had. It was just poor light. The whole playing surface only have a couple of metres before it was concrete underneath..

I think having parking underneath the stadium has some merit. The foundations for a stadium of this size would have to go down to a fair distance to provide stability. I did a tour of Docklands and was told this was to a depth of 30 metres! Obviously the two sites are different but if so much earth is going to be removed and the integrity of the surface will not be compromised, why not?
In any case, making sure the public transport is top notch would be of a higher priority I hope.

probably more worried that rivals wont price in risk. whilst its bad luck for sure, thats not how it really works. there will be a shitfight during construction and end up in courts (if the construction company doesnt become insolvent).

will give papers something to get hysterical about though and spread outrage so taht next time noone will dare to undertake a big project.

Big construction companies don't go insolvent over disputes on one large projects. If they go with a backyard bunch then the government are idiots.

Only a few companies would tender for a stadium of this size. Leighton/ Broad/ John Holland, Brookfield Multiplex and if we are really luck Grollo.

The funny thing is they are telling us anything new. They are going to have to spend a hundred million on earth and foundation works.

In the end the site can be left alone, or it can be developed. It's currently a golf course and it need not be.

Thiess mostly do stuff up North in WA for the mining companies, doubt they would bid on the stadium

Leightons would refer to Leighton Contractors.

Thiess, Leighton Contractors and JH all regularly compete on big jobs, in fact they are often the only ones shortlisted on jobs. Don't really think it's up Thiess' alley, Leighton Contractors maybe. Certainly JH will go after it.

Thiess do heaps of other stuff. They just mainly do that stuff in WA as that is where the work is. In other states they have construction projects larger than this stadium. The won the Brissy airport link and bid on the Sydney Lane Cove tunnel, which are each multi-billion dollar projects.

Thiess did both those jobs in JV with John Holland, as well as Eastlink.

Anyway they are huge in civil infrastructure projects, not so much in building (which a stadium is essentially is).

You have to remember Multiplex is now Brookfield Multiplex, it's been restructured and this is a different project.
