So first off I'd like to say hey! I'm almost brand new to AFL. I'm from NSW and have heavily followed NRL since I was very young. Where I live afl is not popular at all, it is all rugby league around here. I am a huge fan of the Sydney Roosters but as of late have been fed up with the NRL, if anyone here is familiar with it, I'm sure you'd know how bad it has become. I'm mainly talking about the referees. So many inconsistencies with the refs I couldnt handle it any longer. I will continue to watch NRL, but maybe not as aggressively.

So I've decided to give AFL a try, I've watched a few games replayed on fox from the last season and have started picking up on most rules and teams.

I'm also a massive fan of American sports, especially the NBA. I'm a fan of the LA Lakers and support most Los Angeles teams in the other sports. So I'd love to talk some American sports too!

Lastly, I am still undecided on an AFL team to support. Being from NSW, I've have always taken a liking to the Swans. But I have also had an interest in Richmond. My choice would be between the two as I wouldn't mind supporting a Melbourne team. Just know that once I pick a team, I don't like to change haha.

Welcome to Bigfooty mate, and from a neutral I'd say go for Richmond over Sydney.

No Giant love? They could do with the support. You might not get many wins to start with, but you could watch your team build something over the next few years. Of course, I don't know where in NSW you are, so the Swans might simply be a better fit geographically.

If the NRL refs annoy you, just wait until the AFL umpires turn it on. Australian Football is a game where a lot of decisions are judgment calls, and even intent of players comes into it. The game itself can be exhillirating, the umpiring often bemusing and at times farcical.

Excellent choice choosing Aussie Rules over Rugby League :D

If I was new to the game I'd choose one of the expansion teams as they're fairly new (Gold Coast 2011 and Greater Western Sydney 2012) and you'd be following the growth of a club from near beginning. But out of the two you mentioned, I'd choose Richmond. The original Melbourne clubs have a lot of charm about them. Feel free to ask questions about our game. Welcome to BigFooty :thumbsu:

Thanks for all the welcomes guys, much appreciated! Still Undecided on which team but I'll be putting thought into it and decide by the time the season starts!

Excited to learn the game, can't wait.

Welcome to AFL and as a fellow person living in Rugby league heartland. I know the feeling.

I would also go for Sydney, as you live in NSW and it's the obvious choice.

Welcome to Big Footy mate!

Keep watching replays on TV until you find a team that suits you, but I'd recommend sticking with either of the teams in NSW - the Swans and Giants.

I'd personally recommend GWS - the newest club in the competition. Their fan base is small, their players are young, and their experience is little. But they're in for the long haul and they'll be an incredible team in the coming years. Think of it as an investment - if you're willing to stick around, they'll give you what you want to see.

In saying that, if you're closer to the SCG - stick with the Swans. Live AFL is exciting, so whichever you're closest to will allow you to attend those matches with ease.

Should someone at least tell him about all the Sydney Swan COLA hate before he picks them??

As long as he knows that everyone hates Collingwood more than COLA, it'll all work out in the end :p
Surely Essendon have overtaken them by now?!?
Millzz just saying Essendon are drug cheats, Sydney get extra salary cap from the AFL and Collingwood is well.. just Collingwood - these are the 3 most hated clubs going.
If you want to see an exciting club for years to come I'd say support Gold Coast, Brisbane, Port Adelaide or Greater Western Sydney and Richmond I guess are debatable.

I'm sure he can decide who he likes and dislikes for himself..

Thanks for some of the info guys, not quite Sure on this "COLA" mentioned above is, could somebody explain? I assume it's to do with the salary cap.

Not too keen on western Sydney, even though that seems to be a popular choice looking ahead. Still just going to keep on the look out and see if a team catches my eye.

Since it is expensive to live in Sydney, the AFL gives a Cost Of Living Allowance (COLA) to the Sydney teams. The swans have landed Kurt Tippett and Buddy Franklin in the last few years and the popular view is that they were able to add this two stars due to a bloated salary cap.

Unpopular though it is to say such things, don't give up completely on the NRL! Australia are lucky to have two outstanding sports leagues and a great love for cricket, which is my favourite sport. And Sydney is a good team to barrack for - they used to have it very tough even before relocation and once in Sydney, nearly folded. I support Adelaide but there aren't any teams I dislike really, not even Essendon or Collingwood! There are some great games and compilations to watch on You Tube and international or not, the AFL is a brilliant league and Australian Football is a sport with a most rich and enthralling history of great characters and clubs.
