I take it Mugabe must have demanded that a certain number of black Zimbabweans are included in the side, most of which don't seem to be much chop.
Mugabe don't like whitey, simple as that.

Spent a couple of months over there in 2004 and the place is nuts. He was inspired by Winnie Mandela's infamous "a bullet for every farmer' and created the Veterans Law.

I actually watched the swearing in of his government 3 days before the election.

The Zimbabwe team of 10-15 years ago was quite competitive with the likes of Streak, Flower, Goodwin etc. Mugabe really screwed them over and led to all the defections. Haven't been the same since.
Yeah the Zimbabwe of the 90's were at least capable of winning (or at least not losing) matches against teams who are not Bangladesh.

This changed after 2000; after Flower left, Zimbabwe lost any pretensions of being a Test-class nation, with Streak being the only proven Test-class player left.

Wow a fifty run partnership and Zimbabwe make it to 100.

They might even make it into a 4th day.

Edit: maybe not as they lose their 7th wicket

flick it on a few minutes ago, get to see a superb catch. lovely.

feel bad for zimbabwe, i watched them bowl on the first day and they looked pretty out of their depth. 51 in the first innings proves this i guess.

All over in 3 days and that was with most of yesterday rained out, would probably have been a 2 day test without rain.

At least Zimbabwe showed a bit more fight in their 2nd dig but they really aren't test match standard. If they're getting smashed by NZ I'd hate to think what England, South Africa or Australia would do to them

What England, South Africa or Australia would do to them? Much the same. Things are looking bright for NZ cricket for a change (though we'll see if its the same come March and South African tour..).

No matter the quality of the side, you've got to beat what's in front of you, and New Zealand have done exactly that with a complete performance. Feel really bad for Zim, not exactly great for the state of the game there.

There's an important difference between this Zimbabwe side, and the one that was sort of playing Test cricket before they were barred from doing so.

This side is genuinely developing. It isn't a bunch of otherwise third XI kids being thrown in the deep end. It's still a young side, but they have the talent to do well. For many of them, this was their first experience of long form cricket outside of Africa.

The state of the game in Zimbabwe does rely on the political situation, but they've been staying out of it for the time being. Thus, the first class scene is relatively strong, and will serve as a good place of nuturing and improving. If it keeps going as it has been, they'll be fine.

Rather unusual site to see one of the umps score a stump [the Banga ump].Chris Martin at the end went and got his jumper off him and looked as though he was trying to score the stump but the Banga ump wasn't giving it up. :D

BTW,ever wondered what happened to Dickie Knee from Hey Hey ?
He moved to NZ and has become their wicketkeeper :D

Good to see the Kiwis trounce an ordinary side like they should. Hopefully two test wins on the Jonathan Trott will give them a bit of momentum against a strong South African side, really looking forward to the series. :thumbsu:

Haha, yeah I saw that too. Good on him too, first Bangladesh umpire to stand in a Test since 2003, first outside of Bangladesh in the era of neutral umpires. He had a brilliant match as well, very professional performance. He's done heaps of ODIs but good on the ICC for working him into a pretty low-key Test match.

What a comical day of cricket. I was thinking at the start of the day of NZ batted for too long, they would struggle for force a result after yesterday's rain - LOL! Pretty upset there's nothing to watch tomorrow, but for NZ to have won 3 of our last 4 Tests, it's a very pleasing result.

Brilliant from Chris Martin, he's had a very good last 18 months. Great for him to pick up career-best figures this late in a career. Will move to 3rd-highest wicket taker for NZ in his next match.

It was a very good pitch for Test cricket - something for everyone - which you don't often see at Napier. Can't wait for the Tests against South Africa now on hopefully sporting pitches.

Will be interesting to see where Jesse Ryder fits back into the side assuming he's an automatic pick. Personally, I'd stick with the same side. Vettori at 6 provides such freedom to play 4 quicks and realistically you don't lose any batting at all considering our prone-to-collapse top order. It's Ryder v Brownlie IMO, and Brownlie has earned the whole summer after his efforts over here.

Watling was pretty good with the gloves I thought. Anyone else think he should have been given out on the run-out appeal on 99?

Ryder may have to wait a while before he gets another gig. I cant see many changes to that side for a while

Pleased Watling got some runs, but not suprised he kept well. He's a good keeper. I think some people forget he started first class cricket as a keeper, so he's more than a stop gap

Looks like Damian Wright (NZ bowling coach) is doing a good job with the bowlers too, they've bowled well all year. He's even got Martin bowling straighter and a fuller length . He looks so much more dangerous because of it too

Looking forward to the SA series now. I can't see us winning it, but continued improvement would be great !

That's good for the Kiwi's if they could get some competition for places but, well, it is zimbabwe. 4 quicks plus Vettori isnt going to work everywhere.

Vettori has averaged 40 plus the last 3-4 years, with a number of centuries. He's entitled to be seen as a genuine no 6. His bowling is a big bonus too
I think they'll stick with the 4 quicks plus vettori for some time

Need Bracewell to fulfill his promise with the bat to strengthen the tail tho

Kiwis 5/164 after 32.

Kiwis are going along at a fair clip, but a couple of wickets to the Zims and they are a chance to go through them.

Couple of DRS (which would have gone in Zim's favour) weren't referred upstairs.

Ed: Brownlie run out - 6/166

still it is shameful that over the last 10 years the ICC has still not improved a lower level team that can be competitive at test level against the top 5 or 6 and consistently competitive in ODI.

Hardly the ICC's fault when Zimbabwe banished themselves from international cricket for 5 years. If Mugabe hadn't gotten involved around the year 2000 Zimbabwe would probably have been pretty competitive. To be even playing international cricket after what they've been through is a massive achievement in itself.

.....and the worry is the Zim's opening bowler is on amphetamines.

Sorry, his surname is Meth.:eek:

Imagine the headlines when he gets a 5 for, Meth destroys Kiwis.

Zims 8/135 in the 33rd.

no it isn't

but is is their fault that we have Bangladesh in a position as they are and every associate team in the world going backwards to the point that countries such Candana and Netherlands are nearly to the point that Cricket won't exist in 10-15 years

lets not even talk about how diabolical their treatment of ireland has been
