The fact that anyone would try to argue a suspension for this is evidence of how conditioned the football public have become by AFL fckery to try and cover their own ar$es from potential future litigation.

For the record, I think most people thought May was ridiculously stiff.

Newcombe and Howe had a head clash, and it wasn't a 'bump' from Newcombe went wrong and caused the damage.
I genuinely do not understand how he could get weeks for that. He hit him with face. Who the hell would do that if they had the chance not to?

The only reason the situation unfolded the way it did is because Newcombe is actually made of concrete.

This is the right call. I don't think May should have been suspended either. If May had've contacted Evans with his head would he have got off? Well, May supposedly elected to bump (I don't believe he elected that at all) whereas Newcombe elected to tackle so the two incidents aren't the same. There are problems with this.

Firstly, bumping and tackling are both within the rules and are 'fabric of the game' plays. Newcombe didn't brace for contact but apparently elected to tackle, there was a clash of heads and Howe was knocked out regardless, with Newcombe very lucky to escape with just some pain. If Newcombe had've braced, like May supposedly did, there would probably not have been a head clash, and both Newcombe and Howe might have played on.

With a bump contact usually comes from the upper arm of the bumping player, which separates the two bodies and which means there are a few extra inches between the players' heads compared with a tackle, where it's body against body. A bump is executed side on by the bumping player, which means there's still more distance between heads compared with a tackle. So which is really more dangerous? At least with a bump, generally speaking, only one player gets injured, if there's any injury at all.

What if Newcombe elected to tackle but caught Howe's head with a shoulder instead of his head? Is this more dangerous than a head clash? Jeremy Howe

Obviously Newcombe should have anticipated the contact coming in the last 0.1 seconds, by looking for nearby players instead of watching the ball, and subsequently teleported himself 3 foot to the right to prevent contact. Because that's how easy it is to avoid contact, just ask the AFL.

the fact the tribunal is telling players to avoid contact shows how broken the game is.

I didn't want 3 weeks.

I assumed, based on the idiotic precedent we've seen, that that is what would happen.

But my melt has nothing to do with the decision. It's the logic that the AFL ha E given.

They're literally saying that if a May/Carlton Guy or Howe/Duke incident occurs - the players must cop it in the face and hope for the best.

Whatever happens, they must not brace and protect themselves. Leaving yourself wide open and copping it front on is what the AFL expects you to do.

It's simply unfathomable that they're telling players that they they must do what Newcombe did, and take the hit head on, rather than brace and protect yourself.


Honestly. I can't believe it.

Newcombe is lucky he's alive. Yet that is what the AFL is telling players they must do in that scenario?? Simply extraordinary.
