i have done a search and cant find a lot of content for our captain discussing his pro's and cons.(is he untouchable?)

it seems to me he goes missing quite a bit, his best (which is very good) is a long way from his worst.
defensively i think he is just passable, his rebound from defense can be very good or not at all,he hardly ever takes a turn in the midfield if at all.
i hear a lot about his off field leadership but what about his on field leadership i never see him directing traffic or even addressing the players on the ground.

any way just puting it out there for discussion

I think he is a very, very solid citizen. We all know he isn't a star, but I also think we accept his role is played as much off the field as it is on the field. It's nice to know that the worst off-field stories we have to put up with these days are when Jack breaks an embargo about the naming of the Rising Star. Newy has to take some credit for this.

I have always liked him as a player, but have seen others on here express opposing views.

At the end of the day, I feel he is filling in as on-field captain until someone else jumps up and grabs the role. Most expect that to be Cotch, and if that's the case, then I'd say we have a couple years more to wait.

I often do wonder if we will really mature as a team before we make the move to a new captain.

Of course this would come after a poor game against Port Adelaide.

Newman has been very very strong this year and would be in contention in our Best and Fairest. His game on the weekend was below par, but it was for almost our entire team.

i would not call it 1 poor game i think he has had a few real bad ones this year mixed in with a couple of good ones i was trying to make the point between his best and worst where i see a large gap.

a 18 year old kid like helbig gets a almighty slap on here for a bad preformance why not the captain

Yep snap call that does not take into account previous games he has played.

no not a snap call at all been watching him for a long time and find it very frustrating his inconsistancy 1 very good to excellent 2-3 just passable to poor

How often do you see his worst? He has been one of our best players this season as well as in our previous seasons. His game has improved since he became captain.

I would also like to know which games you thought he was poor in. Granted he didnt play well against Hawthorn, but we lost by 50 odd points, and he Lewis hanging onto him like a bad smell.

Helbig's game was borderline disgusting. He directly cost us 3 or 4 entries into our forward half with bad decision making and sloppy ball skills. Hes only a kid and will improve, but the difference between him and Newman is that Newman has the runs on the board, rarely plays a "bad" game, and even when he is playing below par, still hits targets and generates run. :thumbsu:

He has had a couple of stinkers this year but I'd say his consistency is one of his best features and probably one of the reasons he was chosen as skipper. Even his stinkers aren't that bad really.

One of the better fringe characters in popular sitcoms...

His exchanges with Jerry were brilliant + I liked the way the other characters would sometimes seek his counsel in his apartment to settle a dispute... like the bicycle episode where Elaine & Kramer both laid claim to the groovy dragster...

Classic comedy...

Wait... wut?

i have done a search and cant find a lot of content for our captain discussing his pro's and cons.(is he untouchable?) - see above. ;)

Fact is, every week we jig our defense solely around Newman's failings as a player. Because we always try to play him on the weakest small forward match-up, any combination of Deledio, Houli, Grigg or Batchelor get a tougher opponent. So we could be freeing up Deledio, instead we free up Newman because it's the only way he won't leak goals, we can't play him on a genuinely dangerous small or a marking medium forward. I know which way I'd prefer we went about this problem; move Newman to the forward half of the ground and hope his kicking can outweigh the fact the opposition will play someone who kills him in open field running on him.

The other issue is why he doesn't attract a hard tag when almost every time he does his game output drops dramatically? It's because opposition coaches don't really rate his ability to genuinely hurt them over others we have, they are therefore content to play their weakest forward on him, hope to snare a likely couple of goals and assists out of the matchup and use their stopping power elsewhere.

Newman could be a significantly better player if he was fitter and ran hard all game to offset his lack of line-breaking pace issues, none of which is going to happen at this stage of his career.

As I said earlier in the year, I think he might make a great super-sub link man in years to come with that damaging left boot and by being able to spend his limited stamina in one part game burst of ferocious ball hunting play which he's occasionally shown he can do so well.

i think he is a very solid and consistent defender who doesnt get noticed because his main role is as a defender, and his opponent generally doesnt get noticed either. although he is a bit slower and so he can get found out by the faster smaller players (ala betts). he is also a beautiful kick, and provides a good release from the defensive 50. he would easily make most teams, probably only geelong and collingwood would be the teams he might struggle to make.

as for his on field leadership, to me it seems he is often the one involved in kicking crucial goals late in the match when we need to come back or hold off an opponent. he seems to be the one who has pushed forward from the backline to either kick a long goal or pinpoint a pass into the 50 at crucial times. think his long goal against sydney last year. his leadership is not the jonno brown type, he is the reliable player that will do what is needed of him from his team, and to me he seems like he is often the settling influence we need with a team of kids.

great way to talk about a young tiger recruit who has play like 4 full games.

i have seen newman play enough, poor defensively and doesnt impact games enough for a player of his status has played 2 good to very good games this year the rest have been fair to bad i disagree with you he has not been 1 of our bests this year.

who was the last player he locked down on in the back half?

Don't underate Newy, he generates so many attacks by choppping off opposition kicks and firing out a handpass to a running teamate

How many times do we see him on the goaline saving goals?? heaps

3rd in the league for R50's with 84% DE. Doesn't get a heap of the ball every week but when he does, it's to good effect.

Has turned out to be a pretty good player for pick 55(?).

I guess everyone's had a bad game at the same time. I think the only good game that Newman has had was against Essendon. The rest of the time he's been pretty crappy or average.

 Big call there bro

I would have thought he has been fairly good thus far in 2011. He may not get it as many times as a few others but is a good user of the ball and rarely ever wastes it.

I have him in my SC side and must say he is scoring pretty well this year and will be very happy if he continues his 2011 form :thumbsu:

Do you have an agenda against Newman or something?

What's the point of this thread?

The team has been pretty average for a few games this year, why single out Newman?

Leadership has more to it then number of possessions, the players love him and respect him, what more do you want?

Dud delist

No in all seriousness he is just an average hard working footballer

As a leader i think he needs to be better. As it was said in the op he doesnt direct the team on the field anywhere near well enough. We have seen Cotch adressing the team between quarters, and those that get to games often this season have seen him directing players around the ground.

Newman has been the only one over the past few seasons that could lead the team but i think next season the team would benefit from a change of leaders. And being that Cotch looks like he has got his body right, I would like to see him in charge. Let the team grow with his leadership.

no agenda against newman, is this not a internet forum to discuss our team and its players? it seems to me some posters tee off on any player they want and describe them as disgusting hopeless or a dud with no future even if they have only played a hand full of games. is it ok to single them out
yet here we have some one that is only a mid range player in our team that plays some woefull games and he is untouchable becouse he is a fav of some .
i did not call for his head i just asked some questions about his value to the team over all.

pretty ordinary thread, Newy is in career best form right now, yep he had an ordinary one, as did ea member of leadership group with exception of foley...he's prob had 7 good games and 2 poor ones. that's why their is a number of leaders in the side to sppread the load, it was my major dissapointment that no one else stood tall against the tide

Firstly I agree people tee off on other players more then others, but the Captain isn't our issue at the moment.

Secondly Newman isn't a mid-ranged player, name me a couple of players who play the exact same position he does but better.

Thirdly, if the teams form is fluctuating from week to week so will the players form, Newman has been solid all year I could name 10 others before him in certain games that need to pull the finger out.

If you actually go back and watch the game against Port you will see he and Houli were the only ones trying to get things going.

Cotchin
Deledio
Riewoldt
Grigg

and plenty of other players had nights they would prefer to forget, the guy cant do it all by himself especially when his partner in crime Deledio gets well beaten by a front runner in Pearce.

Newman is a star. Opposition coaches mention it opposition captains comment on it.

Sometimes i think the Yellow and Black faithful are a little dense! Rubbish OP!
