News that will rock Collingwood: Leon

I just wish Leon would pick up the phone and speak to the club. His manager could be contacted, but it wouldn't be the same as hearing Leon himself. The club obviously wants to know what's going on, and I think it is absolutely stupid to leave them hanging.

If this is about money, he'd likely be given a minimum wage if he was drafted, he will get what he's given and that's that, there would be no negotiations. A WAFL/SANFL club wouldn't pay more than what we are offering him either, so he should just stay.

If it's over his family, then fair enough, but just tell the club that. It's not as if they are going to send out someone to kidnap him back to the Westpac Center if he answers the phone.

It would be a shame to let Leon's time at Collingwood end on such a sour note.

He can put a price on his head, Luke Ball did.

Would any WA/SA club pick Davis up for the price tag that he is putting up.

If we can't fit it under our cap, then it is most likely that clubs rebuilding (Freo, Port, Ade) won't want him, also putting his age into consideration. Or West Coast, in their premiership window wouldn't want a player that is 30, in favour of a younger player, IMO.

I think thats precisely the time you would want an experienced 30 yo AA player. I think people are too quick to jump off players due to age.

I wonder if Leon feels he earned the pay increase in 2010 after his 09' season.

We are treating Leon's departure as a bad thing. For someone who has had 3 good season in 11, his departure is well overdue.

I for one am glad to see the back of this fellow who goes missing when the heat is on.

Good home and away player. Awful finals players. Travis Varcoe says thank you.

Thanks for saving the flag Leon, this goal is the real reason you got a premiership medal.

Matthews nails it, took an act of individual brilliance to break a 46 minute goal drought.

I miss him already. Let's see Caff turn it on in 2012. Then we can thank Leon for leaving & enabling us to keep Caff.

Funny you say that because as a defender he was one of our best players over the finals series, including the Grand Final. That first Varcoe goal had little to do with him, I can't really recall the 2nd one.

The first Varcoe goal had everything to do with him. At the first bounce he just left Varcoe on his own and the ball came out to him. It was highlighted on all the footy shows.

His finals form as it always has, dipped compared with his H & A form.

Its not his fault, that is the standard he is. But he wont be missed.

Are you for real?
When a player is running into goal do you stick to your man or put pressure on him causing another possession? You run forward or else are called selfish. Davis was in a no-win situation there.

Davis has always been an average finals player, but it was all media talk about him being a very poor player. He had one shocker as a kid and they never let him go about it.

I agree with the sentiments here that his Q4 goal in the 2010 GF gave us the chance to draw the game. Without it we would have lost, of that I have no doubt. He also gave off what should have been a certain Thomas goal in Q3, which would have been the steadier we needed at the time; might have led to a 3 goal win.

Leon, I've loved your work at the Pies and hope you find your premiership medal some day and wear it with pride.

Outside of that, I guess you always have the NAB Cup win you starred in alongside your mates Tarrant and Krakouer to remember.

I know its easy to make comment from the stands and things often look like there are simple solutions.
But .... we don't know what Leon's instructions were, we don't know if he was called back by another player, we don't know if he called another player up to mark Varcoe and that player failed.
What appears to be the case is often something completely different.

Rumour going around that Collingwood have finally made contact with Leon, and have given him one last offer to stay, and he is thinking about it.

Not confirmed, but Leon ain't dead yet as a Pies player, small chance still.

Well that rumour was absolute crap, LEON GONE, officially.:(

Leon Davis has announced his retirement from playing at Collingwood after an outstanding 225-game, 12-season career.

The pull of family and friends has persuaded the 30-year-old West Australian to make the decision to leave Melbourne and return home.

No, he left him at the centre bounce, Loen went right and Varcoe went left. Nothing to do with instructions.

Poor marking of a player.

11 tackles and 20 disposals, if everyone had done that we'd have a flag

Anyway it's not the time to shit on a player after he's had a great career with us

I don't get your point, are you saying Leon actually made a mistake and had a goal kicked on him?, he isn't the last Backman that'll happen too.

Agree, Leon didn't have a great game but he was solid enough, once he settled into the game he was alright, far from our worst.

Personally I'd like to see him play for the dockers, we've done pretty Well out of them on the trade table over the years, poor buggers have been hammered with injurys lately, I'd much prefer he stayed with us though.

Maxwell was more to blame, Leon went to tackle the oncoming player (Selwood) Maxwell (loose man) was zoning next to Varcoe and got sucked in to the play, ball went over his head to a running Varcoe.

They actually showed this on "on the couch" Paul Roos highlighted that it wasn't Davis' fault and the down the ground footage proved it.

That doesn't change what I said.
How would you know what his instructions were/weren't?
You sit in the stands and make judgements on your perceptions, which may be far removed from reality

Your right anyway as both Leon and Maxwell were manning Varcoe from the bounce as Maxwell started loose, leon went to tackle Selwood and if he didn't selwood would of just streamed forward unopposed Maxwell was in no mans land and let Varcoe fall out the back.

Re watch the footage.

He was standing next to him and left him a few seconds before the ball came to Varcoe.

If those were his instructions thank god madhouse is gone.

Actually, thank god he has goen anyway. He blew it in 2011.

Well, I appreciate you confirming that you do not know what he or those around him were instructed to do, that is a significant change from your previous posts.
I think you are shifting your criticism from Leon to Malthouse which is sort of funny considering your starting point.
So lets assume he was told to do something by either his Captain or his Coach, how does that reflect on Leon?
