It was a newsflash on 3AW and siad it was announced by Demtriou.

Said it is no in the same league as Carlton and Essendon would not be fighting it.

Probably be a fine I suspect.

Why wouldn't they do it before trade week?

They might as well just trade all their best picks, in the knowledge that they might lose some!!

ESSENDON TO FRONT AFL COMMISSION
Friday, 3 October 2003

Essendon Football Club will face the AFL Commission on Monday, October 13th after it was today charged with breaching the provisions of the total player payment rules. The hearing is in relation to the internet agreements put in place between the club and players James Hird and Matthew Lloyd. A statement from the club in relation to these charges is attached.

Essendon Football Club statement:

Essendon Football Club looks forward to having the matter of James Hird and Matthew Lloyd's internet agreements resolved.

While the club will not be contesting the nature of the charge, we wish to re-iterate that based on legal advice we have acted fairly and reasonably in this matter. As such we will be vigorously defending that position.

The short lead-time into this hearing does not concern the club as much of the preparation has already been completed. The AFL has documentation outlining Essendon's position on this matter from previous submissions. We have been open and cooperative with the AFL since they began investigating this matter.

The club has also received verbal advice from the AFL that the club audit has been completed and there are no further issues that will be addressed at the AFL Commission hearing.

Essendon Football Club will not be commenting further on this matter until the hearing has been completed.

Did Demetriou himself say it isn't in the same league as Carlton?

I assume that is the internet payments to Lloyd and Hird kicking in and pushing the cap over the limit?

Edit: ah yes - now I see that it is.

When was the last time a team was charged with a salary cap breach and found not guilty?

Given their priors have to lose a 2nd or 3rd round pick surely. If they get yet another fine how unfair on Carlton is it?

Not the same magnitude, but repeat offenders must be punished.

After the **** we copped I would not be happy if they aren't fined at least a million dollars and suspended from the next 3 drafts, considering they have now breached 5 times which in case people didn't know is more than what Carlton have.

My suspicion is with Ron Evans the former essendon prez who will also decide essendon's punishments in charge they will get a small fine and slap on the wrist.

**** the AFL, corrupt, inconsistent, vindictive, blatantly anti-carlton.

The AFL don't have a leg to stand on.

When Essendon say they are not contesting it, they are not contesting the AFL's claims that Hird and Lloyd were paid as part of an internet deal. We are, however, disputing that it constitutes a breach of the salary cap.

After all, the AFL's then investigation officer, Michael Easy, deemed the transaction to be fair. We also have (had) a mountain of legal advice that the transaction did not constitute a breach of the salary cap.

I'd love Essendon to lose all their picks for the next two years but they won't lose much at all, if anything. Ron Evans, the most evil man in football, will ensure that nothing comes of this.

Sorry Greggy, hold ya horses mate. Essendon has not been found guilty... YET and will front the commission on Monday.

Really the AFL has no leg to stand on so will probably either withdraw the charges or give Essendon a small fine.

The AFL can't fine them. THey approached Hird and Lloyd to appear on there websites. Essendon countered that and got exclusive rights to them. They are getting paid less than what the AFL offered them.

Hope Nick Stevens has registered his domain name and sells it to Collingwood if we get him. That way we can strike a deal where he's on $40,000 per annum!

This stinks...obviously because there is blatant cheating goign on!!

"There is no place for cheating in AFL football"

Ron Evans' exact words.

And I had the sentiment of those words shuvved down my throat a million and one times by guys like MarkT here on bigfooty. Demitriou, Evans & Jackson all sat side by side as he said it, brothers in arms, united by those words and the belief that it represents.

If Essendon get a slap on the wrist over this, provided of course they're found guilty, then I swear this will absolutely highlight beyond doubt just how corrupt vindictive and crooked these scumbags truly are.

Considering this is Essendon's 2nd or 3rd offence for cheating, if they don't get anything less than banned from the first 2 national rnds for the next 2 seasons, then they are as corrupt as the scummy American government.
I would expect Carlton to take legal action against the AFL if the above penality doesn't apply to Essendon.
