I really don't think it is in China's interest to exert any hard power at the moment. I'm not sure that the burgeoning middle class would take too kindly to seeing their only children bundled off to war.
My guess for the next major conflict area would be Kasmir with the Indians and Pakistanis.

I think it was Arthur C. Clarke who predicted decades ago a nuclear bomb will be dropped on a 3rd world country if/when it would happen again. He apparently had made some accurate predictions previously.

I'll repeat what I said somewhere else...

A lot of people are in denial, or in fantasy land, regarding the likelihood/reality of a world war occurring. Because the world has been at peace for so long, they've gotten used to things as they are. The laid-back consumerism etc. The world is in big economic, population, resource crisis. That situation always lends for a culling thru war to regenerate growth.

The world has been at peace? That sounds more like fantasy land to me.

The world is a completely different place to what it was when world war 2 occurred. Too many countries, and people have got too much to lose by such a large scale conflict occurring. There will always be localised conflicts, and North Korea may well be one of them at some stage (although I doubt it), but that doesn't mean a world war will result from it. North Korea have a lot do gain internally by making these kind of statements though.

Sure it's been at peace if you ignore conflicts like the Vietnam war, Iraq wars, all the shit going on between Israel and Palestine, the Balkans, all the militant action going on in africa etc... So sure the world has been at peace if you ignore all those or live in a Country that somehow isn't involved in any of that.

Its rhetoric, nothing more. Trying to get back some liberties denied by sanctions in exchange for peace.
The trouble is, that aint gonna happen. Next step, another nuclear test, again hoping for the same thing. As far as actually attacking with anything more than a few shells on an island or some shots across the bow of some naval vessels, it aint gonna happen.
They might be lunatics, but they aint that stupid. China wont be in their corner this time.

If WW3 was to happen, wouldn't pretty much all the developed nations (apart from the ones that hate America mentioned above) all ally up and just smack down north Korea etc

I always had this thought that everyone would ally up for the good of mankind
